Here's a real treat -- the opening theme of "Late Night with David Letterman" recorded directly (on DAT) from the mixing console. This was the music mix only, so it contains no announce audio from Bill Wendell, or the audience (other than what you can hear bleeding through at the end). I added video from an S-VHS recording of the open (from the NBC satellite feed) so you'd have something to watch.
Crank up your subwoofer and enjoy this as you've never heard it before.

If you’re a music nerd it’s fun to hear the theme song and mixes evolve over the years. The early 80’s shows were really dry with little stereo separation and this era was full of fat compression, reverb and gated drums. The CBS years with the larger band were beautifully mixed for 5.1. Thank you for sharing.

I would argue that in a lot of ways, the mix for the current late night shows sound pretty bad, with Kimmel being the worst -- the band sounds mono, with virtually no bass. Very brittle and harsh. Sadly, it hard to get an accurate impression of mixes if listening to an off-air TV station as most employ very heavy-handed compression that totally destroys the work that goes into creating them. A sad state of affairs.

oh man, you have NO IDEA how happy I am to have this. I'm a gen X'er, watched a lot of Letterman growing up. I'm also a musician, and I've always wanted to learn this theme, so I've been working on transcribing it. having this recording is a gift. if you've got other versions of this same theme, please reach out to me, I'd love to hear them!

Ended with being at this bar, drinking a Ballentine, and enjoying an amazing cheeseburger - complete with the homemade potato salad! I even scored a “cwuhp of cawfwee!” … or, “cup of coffee” for the non-locals.

@@VPR2B From my memory it was from a tape of the finished 3 spots, then at the end (or maybe it was the other way around?) featured bloopers, including one where Leslie used his fart hand machine walking by each camera. Maybe I'll ask the guy who gave me the tape awhile back if he still has it.

LSwDL was always, to me, a pale imitation of LNwDL. This is awesome. Now - educate me - did the band play this live every night? And was what they played what was broadcast? Or was the aired intro recorded?
@VPR2B
@VPR2B 3 жыл бұрын
I agree on your first point - nothing beats the NBC show. To your question, yes, the band played live every night. Not just the opening, but they played all through the time when the commercials were being aired, in order to keep the studio audience entertained. At home, all you heard was the beginning as they headed into the break, and a little bit when the show came back on.
