CORRECTION: Halo 2 did not have hit scan, the projectile speed is just insanely high EDIT: Halo 4 doesn’t use hit scan either. Like Halo 2, its projectile speeds are just insanely high (value 4000 according to Generalkidd) Other than that, really good video that opens a fifth eye for me

@Ferocious Battle Speculation: Performance? If they can carry out the collision of a projectile over multiple frames, that means less CPU overhead for checking bullet trail collisions. No idea if this is true, but it would at least by an added benefit.

@@reNINTENDO Depending on how it's implemented, rays are a lot better on performance than simulating physics, and it makes sense when you really think about it: cast a single point out in a direction till it encounters an object, deal damage/apply bullet hole decal on hit. for physics, it's the same thing pretty much, but you have to factor moving a physical object across hundreds of meters per second, and doing the double, triple, and sometimes quadruple checks to make sure the bullet actually hit something, and then deleting the object from rendering and simulations. I'd reccomend taking a look at how valve did the netcode for the source engine since info about that is publicly available. (not sure where, i just remember seeing it some time ago)

It's not arguably broken, it was literally the most op weapon in the entire halo franchise. It was not good for competitive play, it just meant every one would only use the H2 BR. It threw weapon balance out the window. Bungie did not move away from utility weapons in Halo 3, they never wanted the H2 BR to be that over powered. They just nerfed it down to their intended purpose. It is still absolutely a utility weapon. You also didn't mention *how* the Halo 3 br changed. Aside from the bullets firing much slower being a big nerf to it, the burst was also less accurate. The first shot was accurate, the next two shots were inaccurate by 10%. This is why the BR was inconsistent, not because of the lag. MLG buffed the BR's damage by 10% to make up for this.

JarekTheGamingDragon I disagree with almost everything you mentioned here. Halo 2’s competitive scene was quite strong and showed that the Competitive MLG sandbox was quite balanced. The BR was a utility weapon while the secondary would be a situational weapon. You may not think so but competitive players loved the weapon and would heavily disagree that it “wasn’t good for competitive play” The BR in H3 also did suffer heavily from blood shots and refunded rounds because of how poor the netcode was. In Lan settings it’s quite reliable. It’s cool to see you in the comments though!

Yeah, the spread on the BR was certainly an issue as well, but the netcode problems are just as much to blame. I think it was partially due to how slow the projectiles in Halo 3 were. In Halo CE projectile was a good choice, considering the speed in which the bullets travel. In a Halo 3 online situation however, it was a nightmare. Not just the BR suffered from bloodshot shenanigans, but so did the sniper and beyond. I believe the most ideal Halo BR has the consistent spread of H2s BR, projectiles (at CE traveling speeds, not H3s), and a crispy modern age Halo netcode to work with. That way it'll still be scrappy and powerful short/mid range, and helpful long range if you do a bit of leading. I also agree with hit markers on rifles, but completely against hit markers on grenades.

Halo 3 also had some wonky netcode. He mentions it in another video, but the game was coded to prioritize syncing the real time location of grenades and equipment. So if a grenade spawns on the map and rolls around, hit detection suffers. The Halo 3 BR just never feels like it's actually a 4 shot weapon.

When someone said it a couple days ago, I realized that the phrase "Hey guys, it's Monday" will always be ruined for me. Every time, I hear a distant echo, finishing, "...which means it's time for a Halo Q&A"

It's also important to understand that for a lot of people that played Halo CE when it first came out, Halo was our first experience being able to network consoles together and play in matches of up to 16 people. Even as a teen, we would drag our consoles and spare controllers and our INSANELY HEAVY TUBE SCREEN TVs over to our friends houses so that we could play Halo over a LAN all weekend. Those were the fun, teenage late nights where we gamed until dawn and all just more or less passed out wherever we were sitting. This was followed by the glory days of Xbox live, when online gaming came to the masses via console. XBL was truly a pivotal moment in gaming history and I cannot overstate it's importance on the future of gaming. For a lot of people like myself, our first experience with online gaming was with Halo. So there will always be a strong feeling of nostalgia tied to Halo for me. Even now as I play through the MCC on PC, I'm constantly reminded of those ancient nights.

The Infinite Battle Rifle channels the spirit of the Halo 2 Battle Rifle, no doubt about it. I've always preferred the Halo 2 BR over all other games in the franchise but Infinite has changed that, minus the wish to still have the BXB, BXR, and RRX glitches on hand.

That overly designed crap? This is Halo not Titan Fall, stick to Halo's visual identity not some other games. I liked the changes that the battle rifle went through aesthetically, halo 4 had a good look to it in my opinion. When I first got into online gaming, it was with halo 3, although I had played the campaigns of every halo up to that point. When it came time to get my own gamertag, I went with a nickname a friend had given me, “T Train” and I went on to make it “T Train BR” and that’s still where it is today, even on PS4. It’s funny when people ask how I got my tag, and I don’t even think about the train part, my mind instantly goes back to the good old days of halo, which really goes to show how iconic a weapon this is.

I played Halo 3 online damn near 24/7 when I was younger and had nothing better to do, getting around rank 48 in Ranked playlists before I lost internet for 7 years of my life, and I remember the BR being a beast; I practically felt naked online without it equipped. I also don't remember having netcode issues, but I also had some pretty damn good internet for the time and relied heavily on grenades to quickly drop shields for that instant kill headshot.

H2 br in halo 5 is my favorite. It’s honestly fun to use and it looks the best in the series. Although the attachments things are a cool thing to use in warzone.
