Hey everyone! Here the next episode of Soloing Secrets with this look at the legendary late-great blues rock pioneer Johnny Winter. I've featured Johnny once before in a Three-For-All lesson a few years ago, but this time we're taking a deep-dive into a number of Johnny's essential licks, phrases, playing habits, and more - so let's dive in!
The licks/ideas shared in this lesson were pulled from two classic Johnny Winter albums, including his classic Second Winter release along with Johnny Winter And - his first album featured a young Rick Derringer,. Rick also worked alongside Johnny's brother Edgar in the Edgar Winter Group, and collaborated between the Winter brothers frequently from 1970-1976.
The ideas shred in this lesson came from songs such as Guess I'll Go Away, Let The Music Play, and Memory Pain, to name a few. This includes standard Johnny Winter signature licks/phrases featuring plenty of his expressive bending licks, crammed pentatonic-based phrases, various melodic ideas, and much more!
Needless to say, if you're a Johnny Winter fan, a fan of blues rock guitar playing, a player looking for some authentic blues rock licks to add to their bag of tricks, or maybe you're just curious what all the fuss is about - this lesson is totally for you! Give this episode a view, leave some comments/feedback, and please subscribe to Late Night Lessons - THANK YOU!

Even as Johnny was losing his eyesight he was still able to play. A good friend of mine witnessed it in a small local bar in Upstate N. Y. back in the day. Someone from his crew would walk him out to the stage and sat him down in a chair and he would just blow everyone's mind with his ability to play. Kool lesson Dave 👍

Great job David. I think it’s worth mentioning that Johnny was using a thumb pick and hybrid picked a lot. Very unique style, always fit in the “right amount of notes”.

Johnny Winter for me is one of those guitar players where it's the subtle nuances that makes him so unique. He wasn't like Jeff Beck where the moment you hear him it's something so unique and drags you to a place you didn't expect. However Johnny would play something you expect and want to hear in a very unique and Interesting way. He to me was like the American Version of Rory Gallagher, very intense wild, raw players that had layers of nuance playing pretty expected and traditional stuff but leaving their fingerprints all over it

A suggestion: Steve Hunter who player with Mitch Ryder, Alice Cooper solo career band as well as Lou Reeds Rock & Roll Animal phase. He wrote played some of the solos like on the intro to Sweet Jane. If you have never listened to those old live Lou Reed albums, I recommend checking them out. The music and playing holds up to the current day. Thnaks David!
