Here's the next episode of Scales & Tales with 'Pentatonic Puzzles.'
I haven't created a Scales & Tales lesson since last year, but I've been wanting to return to this series and beef up the content/material available on the channel.
This episode focuses on targeting pentatonic scales in a musical and approachable way, as we're hitting all five positions of the scale along the fretboard and noticing how they connect along the neck, much like pieces of a puzzle.
Once you start to visualize and see how you can arrange the notes from this common and useful scale on the neck, you can begin creating an assortment of licks, phrases, and melodic ideas that utilize this type of thinking and layout of fingerings on the neck of the guitar.
After you've worked through the material in this lesson, you should explore other keys, string groups, melodic phrases, movements, fingerings, and much more. This will give you more to explore and work through, not to mention the likelihood that you'll unlock and create a mountain of useful licks, phrases, and ideas along the way.
Give this episode a view, leave some comments and feedback, and please subscribe to Late Night Lessons - THANK YOU!

I believe that this is the best guitar channel on You Tube - and if I could choose only one guitar channel for subscription, this would be the ONE. David Brewster has best mix of fundamentals, technical exercises, chords, riffs, licks, lead parts... I wish I had this information when I start playing guitar 20 years ago. My teachers were very bad in explaining, and they were always in bad mood, inpatient and full of themselves. It is very rare that someone who has this level of guitar playing is so good in 2 other things: being excellent teacher and being down to earth and humble.

Thanks so much for this information as I have been starting to look at sequences and using the 3 + 2 and 2 + 3 forms and this information really helps cover the whole neck.

Great great approach to learning the pentatonic scale and its various patterns. It puts understanding the scale into usable bite sized chunks. Dweezil Zappa also uses this same method to map out and learn the fretboard.

Excellent lesson! Dweezil Zappa taught a similar concept of splitting the boxes into 2 string sets. It literally changed my view of the fretboard overnight. you take the idea even further, with a number of ways to ascend and descend the fretboard. the tapping idea looks cool, sounded great. despite not tapping, I might have to incorporate that. thanks for your time.

This is so helpful. I have been working on getting the two string sequences on the various string sets. It is great to have your examples on how to mix and match them. It is easy to get stuck just playing them bottom to top or vice versa. Of course, when learning them ya kind of gotta take that approach (at least I need to with my limited spatial abilities). But your lesson is timely since I have enough of the map implanted that I can start playing around with interesting patterns. Your instruction is just at the right level for the intermediate guitarist.

Can you make a video on the diatonic scale I learned it cause zakk wylde said to in a DVD and he showed all the positions and stuff but I wanna know more and I’m moving to doing with it what you’ve shown me to do with pentatonics like just riding to strings all the way through the neck I just want some more information about it i guess from your perspective

Nice lesson. Thank you, but I have an issue. I’m not good with minor keys but I have to ask this about the key of Gmajor. GABCDEF#. How many pentatonic Major and minor pentatonic scales are there diatonically in Gmajor key? The I 4 5 are major chords🤓 ,so is this 3 major pentatonics and 2,3,6 are minor chords giving us 3 minor pentatonic scales? I get the 5 shapes for each but this is all the same notes. 😑 ugh. Hope you don’t mind asking. Thank you for all your lessons.

There's only one major pentatonic in g. Major. It's just 5 Notes of that scale played all over the neck in 5 positions making 1 big scale. Easier to learn 5 boxes in chunks but its all one thing. The relative minor of G major pent. is E minor. Pentatonic . Same notes as G major pentatonic played in 5 positions . 1 big scale. Theyre Both are same . Every major key has 5 note pentatonic version missing 2 of the notes. Hope this helps
