I hear a lot of those creative chords on the Buckethead album, Colma. Absolutely beautiful chords!

I got totally lost in this episode. As in “lost in some great chords”! I spend quite a lot of my time noodling away like this, and up until about a year ago, all my noodlings were lost forever, as I had no easy way of recording them or noting them down. I certainly had absolutely no ideas that all the wacky shapes I was coming up with could have names! Now, however, I use the reverse chord finder in the ChordBank app to notate and save my chord diagrams in little snippets, and I sometimes use the Impact app from Focusrite, along with the nifty iPhone hardware kit (iTrack Pocket), to record HD video and sound. Totally transformed my playing and appreciation.

David-I’ve tinkered with a lot of these shapes over the years but never took the time to figure out all the names. Due to the way you explain chords, I have gotten a lot better at this! Thanks so much! And I totally get the -being a Metalhead but keeping your ears open to other styles motto🤟🏻

Thanks again Joe and I'm glad to hear that these lessons are helping! : ) More things are on the way and I'll try to stick with some of these "creative" themed lesson ideas. Learning licks and ideas note-for-note is one thing, but learning musical concepts and turning them into your own music/ideas is something else entirely and an area of music always excites me - the possibilities and thinking about music creatively. Thanks again buddy!

I really like this lesson . Great job . Maybe one day you could look at the chords of Danny Gatton during his solos . He really throws in some interesting voicings . His take on Harlem Nocturne is incredible as well .

Hey David. One of your videos showed up in my feed a few weeks ago... I immediately became a fan. Thank you for what you do. It's made me much more mindful and albeit creative on the instrument these past couple weeks. I've really enjoyed returning to the 80's in a sense, admiring the work of those many great players! Question... the difference between a sus2 and an add9... I thought it if a third is present, it's an add9... but I've seen a few videos where a third is present and you refer to it as a sus2?? This might be a little gray area for me. Thank you very much again for what you do. I really appreciate how humble and passionate and how much you make these advanced ideas so approachable. Thank you!

Bob Weir from the grateful dead in the mid 80's live concerts jams would use some creative chords and polychords, maybe check those type of chords he used during the Jams 1985 through 1989 live concerts

Garcia and Weir did all sorts of interesting and different things in their music. I totally have them on my radar and will create something "dead" in the near future. : ) Stay tuned and thanks again!

I learned to shred stuff first and now at 52 I am learning chords and arpagios... because playing a solo and developing melodies arent always the same...I couldnt. The basics is what I was missing, First 2 year stuff I kind of skipped. Oof.
