Another retired working class guy, thankful for people like yourself. Who feed my lifelong interests in geology, paleontology, archaeology and history. I'm just beginning to inform myself about the history of china, your series on that has been very helpful in giving me the background to read the Oxford History of China. Thanks, to you personally, and to many others too numerous to mention.

The plants the Egyptians were using were Blue Lotus, which is a well known narcotic, asian spider flower, which seems to be a muscle relaxant, and syrian rue, which is a mono amine oxidase inhibitor, which is used to potentiate alkaloids taken orally, boosting the effects. Interestingly if they combined their local acacia with syrian rue, they may have made their own version of ayahuasca.

@@lancerbiker5263 Purely speculative here BUT if the Sumerian King's list is to be taken literally, these kings and their lifespans date back to BEFORE the last ice age! And if we ignore any religious/mythological aspects and take the story literally it could be (puts on tinfoil hat) that whatever event that caused the flood and ice age, also destroyed the perfect conditions here on earth. (For example our magnetic shielding, or something else that guarded us from cosmic radiation)

There is an interesting KZbin documentary called " The King of the Nile- The Shilluk Nilotic Tribe. The ritual in the documentary describes the Narmer Palette, including the comments spoken by the new King, also depicted on the Narmer Palette. The Narmer Palette therefore is an instruction manual of how to perform the unification of the two lands, in the ritual installation a new king, Narmer was being installed, he was not in a battle, the battle had taken place long before him.

I would argue that an alphabet don't need 20-40 letters, the Younger Futhark (viking runes in short) only used 16 runes and still works fine. It it probably around the lower limit though to be easy to understand, but it is super easy to learn and most people can learn it in a day. It usually takes a bit longer to learn the Roman alphabet in school.

Updates of archeological sites is great stuff. Are great stuff? Anyway, we see a lot of lines of bricks, foundations of stone, and then what? I vote for a visit to Greece. Pete Kelly got me excited showing us his trek through little known Greek sites of the Greek world. The Santini volcano site, the fall of Old Crete, the Mycenean Era, the Trojan War, the Dark Age and a look at writing and literacy, etc. Though you would be forced to boat around some gorgeous Greek Islands, might be a hardship. I'd stay away from the entire Levant for the next five-ish years.
