That shouldn’t make anyone feel safe flying. It’s common for control towers to be under staffed! That’s horrible! And as much as it costs to fly and as much money as we have for all other countries, we shouldn’t have issues paying for air space safely!

ATC is underpaid compared to a majority of the airline industry why also the cost of flying has nothing to do with it since they’re federal employees they have a hard salary limit set by the government. its hard to attract good new hires when people are forced to go work somewhere for 10+ years they don’t want to live for mediocre pay and high stress

As I'm listening to this, I'm wondering why entertainers are paid millions upon millions to entertain, yet you have controllers who go through rigorous vetting and training to uphold these positions, and are not only responsible for the safety of humans in the skies, but are manning such stressful and demanding positions. Makes no sense. The pay and scheduling does not compensate fairly enough, not even close, to what they have to do, especially considering they're short staffed and there's so many people flying nowadays. Smh.

Listening to them talk about it, I figured people would think that. I'm not saying they weren't at fault, but in giving the details they left out that flight radar shows the helicopter flying at or below 200 feet, where it was supposed to be, and then ascend for unknown reasons immediately prior to the crash. They provided the information as if the helicopter had been at 400 feet the whole time, but that is factually incorrect.

The ‘experts’ here do realize that everyone involved in this tragic, tragic incident is dead except one person. That is the ATC controller. Can you imagine what that person ia going through with questions like ‘confusion in the ATC’ playing an audio transcript over and over to pick what you want to pick? Those NTSB investigators do what they do because they love that job and want truth, so let them work rather than speculation. I thought President and Vice President were reckless throwing pilots, ATC under the bus claiming DEI but nah, media is upping them with every single news report. For the record, I don’t know any better. But I do know people are who are investigating are some of the best our nation has to offer. So shut up and let them work. Its not that hard.

ATC asked them to confirm that he had 5342 in sight, not once but TWICE. @@jeffreyhusack2400 The helicopter was supposed to flying under the path of approach, and is not uncommon at that airport. There was nothing new or unusual about it, and flight radar actually shows the helicopter doing everything it was supposed to be doing until just moments before the collision when the helicopter suddenly started to ascend for unknown reasons. At a 90 degrees angle the helicopter must have hit the airliner cockpit. hence, we can see in the most recent videos the plane body falling in the river with no cockpit attached to it. The helicopter approach would have not been witnessed by the airliner pilots as the plane nose must have been up and they were focusing forward on landing, but by the people sitting in the windows, which must have been a terrible thing to see in their final seconds. Usually, 10 minutes before landing, even during the night flights, everyone is fastening their seatbelts and watching the city lights and the landing through their window screens.

From Reuters Jan. 31, 4:10 PM: "FAA restricting helicopter flights near Reagan National". This is all information I need. The reason of the mid air collision is SO obvious, that FAA finally after a long list of near misses and one mid air collision restrict military helicopters near Ronald Reagan airport. No more VIP military helicopter shuttle service for the rich and important. I blame BAD procedures, which FAA had stopped finally, that is management mistakes for the mid air collision. BAD pilots behaviour and BAD ATC behaviour are just the follow ups.

They're not quite giving the full picture, so some of the details may be a bit misleading. Most notably to me, the flight radar shows that the helicopter was below that 200 ft ceiling before ascending for unknown reasons, leading to the collision. Some are saying that the helicopter displayed erratic movements prior to ascending, but I am not able to verify those claims. Also, I do not appreciate the way the staffing issues in ATC were worded. An emphasis was placed on the issues being "recent," however these staffing issues have existed for more than a decade. Many people are already misunderstanding recent decisions from the Oval Office and this incorrect emphasis only feeds that fire.

There is a cavernous difference between pilot error and equipment error. And they rarely find a singular cause, more often citing multiple contributing factors. Their methodology is so meticulous and precise that they are often called to provide investigative assistance outside the US. Their job is NOT to satisfy the morbid curiosity of amateur “experts”. How are helicopters allowed to cross over landing/take off areas for planes? Even though they have assigned altitude, planes are ascending and descending right by the runways.
@marviwilson1853

If I look in my rear view mirror whilst driving down the road at night at the two cars behind me, how can I positively state which one is the Volvo?! How on earth can a controller possibly ask a pilot to positively visually identify a particular plane at night from its landing lights? What is worse is that the helicopter pilot responds by saying he has a positive visual id on the CRJ? To that question I would have answered "don't be silly its dark outside". The real worrying thing was that for the passengers on the plane this was the "bottom line" control mechanism that would ensure their safety - an individual pilot being able to positively identify a plane from its landing lights using nothing but their eyesight !!! In an age of all this modern technology the fact that this was the case here is mind blowing.

About a 3 degree approach angle for a plane. Location of impact and distance to landing strip will give distance along hypotenuse. From this one can calculate height from water when impact happened. Was it 200 feet up or higher??? 200 feet seems about right from Googling the reported distance to runway, maybe a little higher. This is a very crude estimate since the distance isn't really clear to me.

People are relating the crash to the hellcopter being at 400', and the fallen passenger plane when the military pilot's actions could have been based on him having "eyes on" a different plane. The sky was full of aircraft, and now consider all the lights coming from the ground level! They're only 200' to 400' above the ground!

the tower should have been more informative like telling the Blackhawk that it's not only AA in the areas but other planes as well. he could see in the radar that a confusion might result but didnt care as long as he was doing his " job". Made the warning last second so he won't get blamed

psa is owned by American airlines American Eagle is a brand name for the regional branch of American Airlines, under which six individual regional airlines operate short- and medium-haul feeder flights. Three of these airlines, Envoy Air, Piedmont Airlines, and PSA Airlines, are wholly owned subsidiaries of the American Airlines Group. American Eagle's largest hub is Charlotte Douglas International's Concourse E, which operates over 340 flights per day, making it the largest regional jet operation in the world.

The radar is showing that the helicopter veered left into the airplane, it looks deliberate - I'm not saying it is - but on the radar it looks like it's deliberate. He could have been turning left because he wanted to go there or thought it to be safe. The controller had one minute when he sould have seen that a collision was quiet possible.
