It is mind boggling that no lessons were learned from Katrina: don't use stadiums for shelters & provide buses to evacuate lower income residents.

@@linetterobinson8513 I agree but OP implied lower income people weren't taken care of. They weren't just throwing disadvantaged people in places like they don't care. People need to give the 1st responders credit for putting themselves in harms way to protect and save people.

This was a 100 year storm, Tampa is not typically in the direct line of these hurricanes. Also much safer to have a roof like that, it was not used by the public for shelter and they were aware it was only rated for 110mph. Unfortunately, Republicans and their leaders have been downplaying and outright denying climate change. This is a prime example of how our weather is shifting.

That stadium was built in 1993 by the city of St. Petersburg with the hopes of attracting a professional sports team. While we can say it certainly wasn't the finest idea for a roof, Tropicana Field's roof held up for over thirty years, and has survived numerous hurricanes, tropical storms, tropical depressions, thunder and lightning storms. It just couldn't hold up to the winds that strong... All in all, that roof did it's job for a long time.

With the superdome it only tore a small section of the roof off. I know I seen it first hand after Katrina hit. It didn't damage the roof like the stadium in Tampa. Of course, there have always been natural disasters. The difference is that fossil fuels have warmed our climate which creates more intense hurricanes and tornadoes, among other destructive environmental changes. We can agree that people need to move away from these areas, as these events will keep happening and getting worse. Unfortunately, it doesn't take a psychic to understand that the south in general is also going to suffer the consequences of fossil fuels and intense weather.

Have you stopped taking your anti-depressants? Yes, the future looks bleak b/c fossil fuel companies own our government representatives. Harris is the only choice that could provide progress. People need to familiarize themselves with 'Project 2025' to see the plans the MAGA movement has for us. It will accelerate climate change, and we cannot afford that. We need to get money out of politics. We need to have a third party that truly represents the people. We need to take action at the local level and vote for Progressives if we want to make sure our planet can continue to support life. So, do something rather than succumbing to despondency. And also do something that will make you feel a bit better too! ❤‍🩹

But if we can transition to clean energy like geothermal, solar, wind, hydro and new technologies, we can stop dumping carbon into the atmosphere and effing up our climate.

The Roman colosseum had a fabric covering that could be opened and closed. It sure does look as though the stadium in question had a soft top of some kind

Florida is lucky they have DeSantis. The state was ready and prepared to respond immediately. Don't forget the people who were left behind by the media and the federal government because of Helene's bad PR.

They left that crane up because it would have taken them too long to take it down. It landed on a different building than the one they were working on. Why did they think it would stay up in 90-100 mph winds?
