Lathe Project - Brass and Aluminum Bolt Action Pen

DIY bolt action metal pen. I first made several as Christmas gifts in 2016 after being inspired by Jeremy Schmidt's pen (his video: • Jer's DIY bolt action pen ). I recently re-made one for my wife out of aluminum and another out of brass for a good friend's bachelor party gift (seen complete at the end of the video). The pen was designed around the common Fisher style pen refill, and the model was made in Autodesk Inventor.

Is the measurement mm and inches?

The dimensions are in inches except where otherwise noted (ie. the 6mm bore and number size drill bits)

@@CalebTWilliams Thanks! Haha I guess I need some steel toe flip flops. Yeah a finger brake would work a lot better than wood blocks and a mallet, might have to start parking the car outside...

Ben, P-L-E-A-S-E read my comment under your Veritasium light bulb video. I have yet to see anyone who is familiar with transmission lines make the observation that I have. [So many people with good intentions. So few completely good answers.] - - from a very experienced RF engineer.

During assembly you put some sort of set screw into the brass threaded section. There is no detail of that in your drawing and when you do it it’s partly off-screen. Can you elaborate on that part? What is it and its purpose.

I insert a #8-32 set screw into the brass threaded section. This threads in and locks in place the thumb-piece that is inserted into the brass threaded section (at a 90 degree angle). Otherwise this thumb-piece would just fall out as it is not pressed, glued, or threaded in.

What is the name of the machine you are using for creating the J path (at 2:40)? Do you have a link for shopping that?

It is a benchtop mill. Search RF-30 mill.

Those are all drill bit sizes. Just like Metric or Imperial sizing systems, there are the letter and wire gauge (number) sizes.

can you do it without a milling machine ???

Hmm, you could probably get away with a Dremel tool to make the slot (abrasive wheels or burrs), maybe some small files to finish it off. Could also use a drill press and drill several holes side by side then file out the rest.

I would have to flip flop my way past you seeing as the door is my own :) More seriously though, I certainly wouldnt think of working in an actual machine shop in flip flops. However, in my home shop doing small work like this I wasnt too concerned about dropping some 0.375" brass on my foot. Not condoning flip flops for shop use 👍
