Audiences are so hungry for unique independent cinema that can stand alone without all the old tired huge budget Hollywood franchises that are so unoriginal and dull. The Substance was so over the top, so unique, so camp - it was a revelation and audiences are here for it!

There are more than enough movies coming out every year that don't fit the hollywood formula. ("A different man" for example is a perfect companion piece for this movie). I think if the Substance wasn't as thematically relevant as it is and also completely batshit crazy at the same time, people wouldn't have supported it the way they did.

Corbet's parallel between architecture and filmmaking was very interesting. Unlike drawing or playing a song, it's not an art form that can come out in its "finished form" immediately. It's an iterative, combined effort by definition.

I’m so glad that Washington was included in this roundtable. It irritates me so much that he isn’t being included in the awards conversation like the others are because The Piano Lesson was one of the very best films of 2024 for me. That climatic scene where Berniece plays the piano is one of the most extraordinary things I’ve EVER watched!

The interviewer did a great job; however, I would have loved it if he drew a connection between The Brutalist’s anti-capitalist undertones and Dune’s speculative portrayal of our future. I think the dialogue between the two directors on that topic would have been spontaneous and interesting. All and all, great event! And thank you Los Angeles Times for continuing this tradition.

@ I did a church scene with Edward Norton and it got cut out the film. Looking back on the scene and after watching the movie, the scene we did wouldn’t have made sense with the overall story they ended up telling.

I’m going to watch ‘The Substance’ again. I love how every single frame was made with pure and full on intention. Fargeat is an intelligent writer who isn’t afraid to tell her truth in the most craziest of ways. Just when you think the theme of self hate can’t get any worse, it does. I appreciate the time she took to create this masterpiece. PS in my opinion the ending was excellent. The meaning hits hard by force.

The interviewer was wnderful, asking questions born of what felt like genuine curiosity and steering things in such interesting directions while also allowing folks to go off-piste in really informative ways. There need to be many more of these so the general public cna come to know the sophistication and deph of commitment invilved in the art of film directing. More of these might help folks go back to theaters as well. THat mightbe overky optinistic but it is thrulling tohear these filks share their process. I would love to hear from directors of Girl with the Needle or Vermiglio or Walter Salles; all the great non-english films this year. thankYOu

At first Brady was familiar to me but I couldn’t place where I knew him from. It was from his first movie Thirteen and later Thunderbirds. He has really come along way his wisdom and depth is really interesting to me and I love hearing what he has to say

In defense of Brady Corbet, in that conversation, Sean Baker was constantly asking questions like an excited puppy dog. And Corbet did ask lots of questions about Baker, but they were more about Baker's career and previous films. So I think it's unfair to accuse him of being disinterested in other filmmakers.
