It's funny how the interviewer says he doesn't want to refer to June as Offred, yet calling Serena Joy "Mrs Fred Waterford" is the same thing (her own name is erased and she is reduced to being "of Fred" as well). Some viewers may not immediately realize this, as one usage of this re-naming of women as symbolic property of their husbands is still very common.

what an amazing actress, so happy she has been able to show she is more than beautiful face! I see her in oscar winning films in the future. Serena is the most interesting character and now in episode 9, season 2, you can see her humanity and guilt seeping through, without her even saying a word.... What an actress!

@mawell94426 жыл бұрын
Fussy Puss I agree!!😞, but I think serene had to maintain her authority even after what just happened.
@veggiesarefruits5 жыл бұрын
Exactly. It's so sad. However, she did elude to it when she mentioned that they WANT to be friends, but they can't, due to their circumstances. If you think about it, everyone in Gilead is trying to survive, but depending on their status, the way they survive has to be different. So for Serena, she survives by keeping control over the household and keeping boundaries between herself and June and Rita. If she loosens up and allows them too much freedom, it could end in the Guardians thinking she is part of the resistance and hanging her from the wall. Serena craves connection so much because she can't even be with her husband anymore, and she can't have any real friends, so the only way for her to be able to connect is to have a baby. So it's no wonder that she's so obsessed with controlling June and getting that baby.

Why some nasty and disrespectful comments? Is it easier nowadays to insult others than to think and articulate complex and descriptive thoughts and words. When men talk the same to women, the reactions by women are not what I read here. Thinking and articulating one’s thoughts in a more respectful manner Would have a positive effect on society rather slowly destroying it with a lack of common courtesies.

One of the extraordinary strengths of Atwood's novel was the message it delivered. In order to move beyond the book, the series has stepped away from that message, either to delay it or to change it altogether. I really hope the series is developing towards an end point and doesn't go the way of TWD - just milking season after season of dark drama, recycling the same plot devices over and over. What a disservice that would be to the viewers, to women, to America.
@hinahinananoha77836 жыл бұрын

What's really interesting about Serena's journey, for me, is the fact that she's so picky with why, when and who's receiving her empathy. And the story pushes her to the limit with it. Be a mother was all about what REALLY matters to Serena. I can't wait to see who she will with all that stuff out of her system. She kinda lost everything. It's also interesting how Yvone Strahovki is synked with the whole narrative. She seems to know where is everything at, through the entire second season episodes. Madeline Breewer always seems so detached from the whole plot which, I think, it's totally intentional. I'm think she's consciously unaware of everything in order to keep her acting 'clean' and true with the idea that Janine itself keeps her mind 'safe' from reality. What amazes me on the show is how everything seems to be perfectly calculated and the cast is soooo smart.
@veggiesarefruits5 жыл бұрын
I got the feeling from Madeline Brewer that she is really not the brightest star in the sky, and that she really doesn't grasp how important this show is to the culture right now. She's kinda like her character, Janine, in a sense. Just skipping along, unaware of what's happening around her. I think she just sees this as a fun acting job, which I suppose is fine. But it definitely makes for bad interviews and therefore not good press for the show because she can't answer any of the questions and sounds like a bimbo.

I've finished season 2 episode 9, and I don't feel for Serena. Sorry, but if she does a 180 at some time in the future...I just won't believe it. She's done too many cruel things even under Gilead rules that she hasn't had to do. And I've watched the promo for episode 10, and she's totally focused on being a mom and seems to have forgotten the lessons she should have learned in Canada. Serena is a damaged person...at least that's the way you're playing her, and this kind of damage starts in early childhood. I appreciate you as an actress. "Chuck", "Dexter" (both pretty violent women), and now this. Congrats on your baby.

In this show just like in some aspects of life they take parts of the Bible and dramatize them, making them so literal and bad but other parts they ignore like kindness and lack of judgement. I’m just realizing Serena and Fred are not sleeping in the same room and seemingly don’t have sex. That’s an office, not a bedroom so why is he in there at night or all the time? It makes no sense.
@buffy6116 жыл бұрын
Because, with the lack of sex in a marriage, comes the lack of intimacy and lack of unity. It separates a couple. And, with extremist groups that use religion as their way of making their deluded thoughts on how the world should be and only use what is good for them.
