Latin America wants to create the OPEC of lithium.
Three Latin American countries control 65% of the world's lithium reserves and could band together to set the price.
BT's Kei Pritsker explains what this would mean and why the US is so obsessed with Latin America's lithium.

South America, I could see it. Latin America is too big to make a union. And all Lithium is there in the South too. This video could be better titled.

With the new sodium battery by China, the attraction to lithium may be transitory.

Not at all... Lithium batteries will be for high quality applications such trucks, industrial machinery, energy storing and luxury cars. Sodium will be chosen when your application is target to massive production like mainstream cars and electronics.

That is a smart idea but how can they implement it? Those 3 countries alone don't have particularly strong military forces to defend it from US interests. Maybe if more countries got involved the tide would turn.

I think that creating a multilateral organization would make it harder for the socialization of lithium production to be brushed aside in any one of those countries like they tried in Bolivia. I don't doubt the u.s. would like to openly invade South America but that wouldn't leave them much room to save face. Also the u.s. military has had a long string of losses on the battlefield and has been struggling with recruitment. They're rightfully afraid of Vietnam Syndrome causing unrest at home and mutiny in the military, because Americans have even more connections with South America than they did with Southeast Asia. I don't think they'd be nearly as successful at dehumanizing south Americans in the eyes of the general public as they were with Afghanis and Iraqis

@@thematronsmilitia The US is also a desperate empire and leadership so corrosively corrupt that they have zero regard for their own country's state of well being which means that rational decision making is likely out the window for the US. Also, Americans are so brainwashed and apathetic (decades of propaganda at the works) that I don't see Vietnam syndrome ever happening unless the problem directly affected too many people in the US personally to be ignored. You underestimate America's ability to dehumanize, we even dehumanize ourselves a lot. I think what saves those three countries is simply that the US can't afford to start a conflict with them at the moment while they are still dealing with Ukraine and starting shit in Taiwan against China.

We need graphite and other types of batteries to grow quickly! It's better if there's as many different types of batteries as possible. That's better for access for the Global South and also makes sure that coupe mongers have to many options so they can't focus. Diversifying is also important for the environment, lithium is heavy on water usage and is very damaging to the Earth in its production process. Not even mentioning what happens when it catches fire.
