To explain the ornamentation. The red dot on the forehead is a bindi. It has huge significance in hinduism and indian culture. The bindi is called the "third eye" and is a spiritual symbol. In hinduism we believe that there are two eyes for seeing the world externally, but there is a third eye that looks inwards, that is able to glean the ocean of spirituality, and find enlightenment, bliss and consciousness. Hence usually women and men would adorn the third eye as an acknowledgement of that spirituality. In terms of the painted hands. That is referred to as mehendi or henna. Its a dye that is painted on arms hands and feet for religious ocassions and weddings. Its quite integral to the south asian make up ( india , pakistan, bangladesh, nepal, sri lanka) . And the jewellery is just something we are big on. wearing jewellery is considered a symbol of Lakshmi (the goddess and wealth and fortune) and thus symbolises wealth and prosperity. In terms of dance. these films take influence significanlty if not even directly from indian classical dance forms. There are 8 forms of indian classical dance, in devdas you will see Kathak (one of the indian classical dance forms) used in various musical settings. "Maar dala" and "Kaahe chhed mohe" from devdas, are iconic for kathak and classical thumri if you want to get further into dance. Indian dance forms heavily emphasise intricate movements and expression. Hence why it comes across as soo natural.

Actually in this case they aren't wearing mehendi but আলতা/alta (red dye), which is apart of Bengali culture. Bengali women across both West Bengal and Bangladesh adorn their hands and feet with the dye and is most commonly worn during cultural and religious festivities as well as Bengali weddings.

On point!! Just to add further, each state in India usually have its own festivals, type of music (folk music), style of dancing, choice of attire etc. In this video, Begali culture (from state of Bengal, eastern part of India) is captured. The beauty is, senior pioneer actress Madhur is from Maharashtra state (western part of India) and Aishwarya (junior to Madhuri) is from Karnataka state (southern India) however, they both were spot on in depicting Bengali culture ( attire and dance especially). Fun fact. - Aishwarya was way too nervous to do a dance duet with Madhuri since Madhuri is considered as one of the best female dancers that bollywood ever had.

The context of this song is that they’re celebrating the Bengali festival of Durga Puja (you see the idol of the goddess in question in the first glimpse). They’re wearing a red and white saree, a typical outfit worn during Bengali religious festivals and other auspicious occasions. The red dot on their forehead is a tip/bindi and the designs on their hands are made with another red dye called alta. Both are worn for auspicious events.

To answer some questions: This film is based on a well known but old novel, Devdas. It's been adapted for either film or TV (or web series) at least 20 times across India and Pakistan, so the basic story is well known, though different adaptations focus on different things. The novel was published in 1917 by famous author Sarat Chandra Chatterjee. He was a Bengali, living in Bengal. Hence, the original book was set in Bengal, during the early 1900s. This particular film was made as period romance drama. The director Sanjay Leela Bhansali is known for being a perfectionist about visuals - so there are lots and lots of small details to convey the mood of Bengal in 1917. Accordingly: - What is this occasion? This is Durga Puja, a festival/religious celebration specific to Bengal and Eastern India. For the story, any big party would've worked, but SLB decided to stick with Durga Puja as the occasion to really drive home how Bengali the characters are. The "Hindu-ness" of this festival is also highlighted by all the red and gold in the scene. In general, red, gold, and orange are associated with Hinduism and green and black is associated with Islam. - What's the red paint/decoration on their hands and feet? Another thing specific to Bengali and East Indian women. It is just a traditional style. Women still do this for weddings and special occasions in Bengal. - That guy seems like the bad guy YEP! He's the bad guy. He's just a random gossipy relative who is about to ruin things. This is happening at a private residence (it is a party at Paro's house - the woman dancing to Shreya's parts), and this dude is supposed to be rich, gossipy, mean - and related to Paro through marriage. Other details: In the film/book, the character of Chandramukhi (dancing to KK's part) is supposed to be Muslim. Also, she is a courtesan. Hence, her presence at a Hindu celebration at an upscale household is supposed to be socially trangressive, but also an incredible act of kindness, kinship, and hospitality by Paro (dancing to Shreya's parts). In most of India, there are beautiful designs done on the floor in coloured sand (rangoli) for religious special occasions. In Bengal, we use rice powder and water to make a kind of paint, and make the designs out of that. This is called alpona. The main difference is that you can walk on it, and it will pretty much last until you wash it off - so these can get pretty big. You can see a big alpona on the floor they are dancing on. Yes this is a Hindu thing as well. The lyrics of the song and what they are doing/dancing matches up. This is how most Indian classical dance works, so the audience would be familiar with how that works. I know you looked at the lyrics, but it's different to see them doing it in motion. eg. when they sing "dola" they literally sway. When Paro says "I hope he puts sindoor/vermillion on you (ie. I hope he makes you his wife)" she mimes putting on sindoor. When they talk about leg jingles or anklets, they literally touch their ankles or gesture to their feet. You can check out a version of this with English subtitles here if you like: kzbin.info/www/bejne/haXRqnWMeZWCqpo In other parts of the film, you can see the women wearing blouses with short but puffed sleeves (like in the lamp song - another one where all the dance moves correlate heavily to the lyrics). This was a very recognisable style in the 1920s, that has been out of fashion since. The script even has characters randomly speak one or two Bengali words to really get across that Bengali feeling - but as a Bengali myself, although I appreciate the big budget mainstream spotlight on my culture, those parts came off as kind of cringy, because the actors just have totally the wrong accent.
@PackOfWolves2 жыл бұрын
PS: If you wanna see a subtitled version of Sil Sila ye Chahat ka (the lamp song), I recommend this one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pnKreXqDd7Oar80 The translation and timing is great - but the audio has been altered to avoid copyright. I recommend watching it 1.5 speed.
@sanjuktabhattacharjee82582 жыл бұрын
Just to add to this, the red colour is very auspicious in Bengali Hindu culture. So a traditional Bengali attire for a Bengali woman is a white sari with red border in the style worn by the women in this video (there are many styles of wearing a sari - a traditional Indian garment). And, this scene was not there in the original novel. These two characters never meet in the original story. And I guess most Bengalis don't like this movie because it's not exactly an accurate description of our culture and it did not do justice to the original story. Women did not dance like this in Bengal in that period either. But aesthetically, it's nice to look at and Bollywood does take some liberties for dramatization purposes. Also, this movie was screened at the Cannes Film Festival that year.

Great reaction guys. Thankyou. Also, the ladies are all wearing Bengali sarees. In India every state has a different way of draping sarees. These two sarees in particular weighed so heavy that there were times when Aishwarya couldn't manage to stand up after sitting down. Her ears bled from wearing the super heavy earrings. Also,this song was the most epic moment of Indian cinema because it united two amazing actors and dancers Madhuri Dixit and Aishwarya Rai. Madhuri Dixit was pregnant here, so she wasn't given a lot of heavy movements. Both the ladies are Indian classically trained dancers(in India we have several different forms of classical dance,again different in different States. Like in the West you have ballet) In Indian dance numbers, the face which includes majorly the eyes and lips are supposed to be very expressive...even when carrying out a super complicated dance movement. That's how we perform. And not just the mechanical aspect of it. People whose faces are blank while dancing are not considered good dancers in India. You can see there are moments when it's mostly the closeup of their faces...because they are supposed to be talking through just the eyes..There is so much to tell but it will take me hours to type everything 😅

Now you guys will come to know about the Indian classical dance... Interesting... 😂 Actually it's a movie based on a Bangla novel published in 1917 called Devdas... "Devdas is a Bengali romance novel written by Sarat Chandra Chatterjee. The character of Parvati was based on a real life second wife of zamindar Bhuvan Mohan Chowdhury, it was said that even the writer visited the village. According to sources, the original village was called Hatipota." - Wikipedia

Yes Bollywood have its own Genre for Music and Dance. Bollywood genre is a mix of Indian classical "Music & Dance" with another genres. And that red circles and red color on palm, fingers & feets was red henna. And bindi is a dot used to wear on forehead between both eyes for a fashion.

Most of the dances in this movie are the classical dance form Kathak or derived from classical dance forms. India has 8 classical dance forms from different regions and they involve a lot of rigorous training from an early age. Of course there's no age to learn but it's always better to start young and it takes years to master the dance forms. It's actually common in almost all classical dance forms to dance barefoot that too with "ghungroo" on. Ghungroo are basically a belt of bells like anklets and they are very heavy. The number of bells they can contain can range from 50-200 usually and having to dance barefoot with them weighing down your ankles requires a lot of training. Kind of like how it takes a few years of training in ballet to finally learn how to go en pointe, it takes a few years of barefoot dance training and then you are introduced to dancing with maybe 20 bell ghungroos and eventually the number of bells in the ghungroos keeps increasing. So most classical dancers are adept in dancing barefoot. Both the actresses in this movie are trained classical dancers, especially Madhuri Dixit (the one voiced by Kavitha Krishnamurthy). Aishwarya Rai (the one you saw in the previous song) was also Miss World. They both are very popular actresses.

Indian dance is extremely refined, it can express ever emotion, and each hand gesture express a word, you'll really need an expert to explain, there are various types of dance forms in India, each a unique style and dress, classical dance in India has a very vast history and is quite colourful 😜

This dance is taken from classical dance forms of India...India is home to rich diversity in both singing & dancing ...There are Hindustani classical , Bengali Ravindra Sangeet , Carnatic in singing ...there are classical dance forms of Kathak , Bharatnatyam , Kuchipudi , Manipuri , Kathakali , Satriya Dance forms all are based upon Indian scriptures more specifically from the Vedas For this dance , it's one of the most perfect dance from 2 exceptionally classical trained dancers Madhuri & Aish ...Aish was my first crush 😁😁

Still enjoying you guys’ content. The only thing I’d comment on here is when you perhaps can feel some sort of tension or build up to something you’re viewing for a first time, try not to pause until the tension releases. By pausing throughout that ending build up of the song you guys didn’t get to experience the intensity and dramatic tension. You can hear the tone shift in the music and as the brass kicks in somewhere your instinct tells you “oh no, some shits about to go down” Other than that great content as always
