*sorry for the long essay but here we go ,* This specific form of singing style is called indian classical music , people practice and perfect their skills for decades starting from a very young age . Classical form is usually a bit modernized when used in Indian pop . Ofcourse this isn't all but I can't even begin to explain the entirety of these ancient techniques and musical genres . I would suggest watching a detailed explanation video online . Indian classical music is a rich tradition that originated in South Asia and can now be found in all corners of the world. It's origins date back to sacred Vedic scriptures over 6,000 years ago where chants developed a system of musical notes and rhythmic cycles . Indian classical music has two foundational elements, raga and tala. The raga, based on a varied repertoire of swara (notes including microtones), forms the fabric of a deeply intricate melodic structure, while the tala measures the time cycle.Indian classical music is very closely connected to nature, taking inspiration from natural phenomena including the seasons and times of the day to create ‘ragas’ or musical moods and many time cycles or taals’ that have been further codified. *For Efra , Which instruments are used in Indian classical music? Many different instruments have been used and developed for Indian classical music such as: Sitar - The sitar is a plucked stringed instrument used in Hindustani (North Indian) classical music. The instrument flourished under the Mughals and it is named after a Persian instrument called the setar (meaningthree strings). The sitar flourished in the 16th and 17th centuries and arrived at its present form in 18th-century India. It derives its distinctive timbre and resonance from sympathetic strings, bridge design, a long hollow neck and a gourd-shaped resonance chamber. Tabla - The tabla is a membranophone percussion instrument originating from the Indian subcontinent, consisting of a pair of drums, used in traditional, classical, popular and folk music. It has been a particularly important instrument in Hindustani classical music since the 18th century, and remains in use in India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal,Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. Vocal - Many instruments aim to emulate the voice in their technique and expression. In both North and South India there is a strong tradition of vocal music ranging from extensive elaborations of ‘ragas’ to lighter songs and romantic or spiritual poetry. Veena - The veena comprises a family of chordophone instruments of the Indian subcontinent. Ancient musical instruments evolved into many variations, such as lutes, zithers and arched harps. The many regional designs have different names such as the Rudra veena, the Saraswati veena, the Vichitra veena and others. Mridangam - The Mridangam is a percussion instrument from India of ancient origin. It is the primary rhythmic accompaniment in a Carnatic music ensemble, and in Dhrupad, where it is known as Pakhawaj. This is just the tip of a giant iceberg , hope this summary explains some of the basics .

These two are definitely very good with their understanding of music. Especially the girl , I think her name is Waleska , she has sharp musical sensibility. She got immediately when Shreya was doing the sargam that it is an arrangement of notes. Many western reactors ask “what is she saying , is she rapping etc”. In the previous video , she quickly identified the folk song also as “folksy”. This is what knowing and analysing is.

The rifts or accidents you talk about is done by almost everyone trained in Indian classical music be it Hindustani or Carnatic. It is the essence of our music. Every song is based on one raaga or a combination of raagas and the rifts they do are within the boundaries of that raaga. A raaga consists of the musical notes i.e sa re ga ma pa da ni and every raaga is built around these notes and the it is left to the singer to bring out the essence of the raag they sing. Everything is almost onstage improvisation

In India, music is studied not only for fun and for expressing art, but it is studied as a curriculum almost. There are styles that stretch all the way in the North like Sufi music to the ancient carnatic styles in the South. Children are drilled with the basics relentlessly. They are taught like they're in a class and when they make mistakes, they are censured! It's beautiful. There is deep respect for music in India. Especially the traditional forms of music. Now of course, this has evolved into the modern takes of music in India. Even there perfectionism is always the goal. Apart from the jingoistic Movie songs which have their own charm in every region of the country. We're a musical nation!

The right left part you said are basically combinations of the indian versions of the "do re mi fa..." that we sing as " sa re ga ma pa...", these combinations of notes sung together like this is basically called "taan" and is something Indian classical singers are trained in. Indian classical uses so many notes between the major notes that western world thinks are "proper" to use. It's way more complex than western music, needs a lot of training to even comprehend the intricacies of Indian music.

@kakashi374663 жыл бұрын
Well if you asked how she does it ? Well Shreya Ghoshal has Indian classical singing background,so 1. Regular practice for years 2. The answer is in the song itself, in this particular song a part of it is revealed. So let me explain songs are basically an arrangement of notes or scales, sargam is Indian scale. So when you sing a song if you have Indian classical music background they actually teach you to sing songs in scales first then "alap" (when you sing notes only making AAAA... Sound) then it becomes really easy to put to together the alap and the words of the song together. That's why micro adjustments are possible in between of pronunciation and you remember when and which note hit, because you remember the song in sargam form as well. With practice it becomes instinct, then you don't have to learn the sargam of every song you will be able to sing and tell the notes if someone is singing the song just by instinct. Well it involves a lot more things but it'll just make it more hard and complex for example raga. Indian songs are based on certain raga and mix of ragas. Just saying so that you can relate it with your music practices. I am not a singer and I know you both are professional, I just wanted to help you out a bit that's all 😁✌️👍

These are predefined "runs" of notes (known as "Sargam" in indian classical) .. it's like singing a predefined set of "do re mi fa..." ...in India classical we call it "Sa Re Ga Ma Pa dha ni Sa".. there are thousands of such combinations pertaining to different moods of human emotions.... This is more of a layman explanation...you would have to spend an entire lifetime to know the depth of Indian classical. Hope this helps ...keep up the seeking and good work.. Cheers!! 🤟

Thanks so much for reacting to Indian music! It's one of my favourite genres to listen to, and I've really enjoyed watching you both get introduced to it! Apologies in advance for the tl;dr ... 10:14 - Not sure what the "timbales thing" being used was, but the two main types of drums used in Indian music (especially classical) are the tabla (two separate drums which sit upright) and mridangam (one drum with 2 sides and played horizontally), which are played with your palms and fingertips. 12:20 - It's interesting you mention a "vocal workout" because that's essentially what that is. As someone who has learned (mainly South) Indian classical (aka carnatic/karnatic) music, that is literally how we learn. For example, the section starting at 11:06 is the equivalent of singing "Mi Fa So La Ti La So La || Ti La So La Ti Do - -" for us, and that is how we start learning any song. In fact, when first starting to learn carnatic music, we ONLY learn to sing vocal exercises of notes (in different scales, arrangements, speeds and rhythms), and repeat over and over and over again for weeks and months ... And then we build on that by singing the notes with just "mm" sounds (like humming) on the note placements, then onto "aah" sounds at the same notes (like Shreya Ghoshal did at the end of the performance). And we learn by sitting on the floor cross-legged, so singing standing becomes much easier as well. That was the tip of the iceberg, and anyone trained in carnatic music for 5-10+ years would be able to do it reasonably easily. Not to say that what Shreya Ghoshal does is easy - that sort effortlessness is very admirable! I also remember you mentioning in your Indian music podcast that you were impressed by the way the audience seemed to be interacting with and enjoying Arijit Singh's music - that's partly because it was a medley and everyone knew when the (very famous) songs where changing, and partly because a large proportion of Indian people start learning carnatic (which is mostly in South India; the similar genre in North India is hindustani) music as young children and continue for a few years, so a lot of people have a basic familiarity with what may sound like very complex/subtle music. So sorry for the text dump, I just get very excited when looking at Indian music from a technical perspective! I stopped taking carnatic music lessons 8 years ago and have not kept up much practice, but you've motivated me to revisit it, so thank you! If you want to read even more about carnatic music, like for most things, wikipedia has a pretty good introduction :p. If you're interested, an example of a very famous carnatic song is called Sadhinchane (composed by Tyagaraja in late 1700s/early 1800s) and has been sung by innumerable people over the years (one version is kzbin.info/www/bejne/iIbQh4uXbJaLfLc which is already a bit different to how I learned it! - highly recommend watching it, even if it's during your own time). As always, thanks for the reactions!

Indian classical music is vast with a lot of technicality. Nice video, you might want to react to Kaushiki Chakraborty's darbar festival video, she is singing one of the thousand Indian classical Ragas.❤️
