Most cultures do this, but the big difference is most people from richer countries go to bars to drink and socialize. For ordinary Pinoys like me, we prefer to have drinking session in the back yard, side yard, front of the house.

Can’t wait for PART 2! Inuman or drinking session with friends happen everywhere, usually at someone’s home. And likely with a karaoke. You’re right Waleska when you say they achieve this sound by replication. These are not people who take singing lessons. They have the ear for music and definitely the talent. It’s true the music industry in the Philippines is stiff because yes, most anyone can sing and sing good. So Filipinos are kind of hard to impress. That’s why you see people just walking around seemingly “not appreciating” the talent because they’re a dime a dozen. But yeah, it’s the land of AMAZING singers. Can’t sing to save my life but I’m proud to be a Filipino living in the US.

Well when it comes to after-work drinking session or unwinding, it depends on the geographical or regional customs. In rural or provincial areas normally, late afternoon to night after farm or hard labor, guys usually have their drinking sessions, either cheap brandy, rum or gin or ginebra (BTW, Philippines is the largest consumer of gin in the WORLD. Major gin brand (cheap) is Ginebra San Miguel). They drink with "pulutan" or side dish while singing with guitars or karaoke. For urban folks depending on the socio economic class and age group, middle class to upper class drink in bars either with bottles of beer or hard drinks. They drink and chat around or drink while watching live bands or videoke bars. For younger group, they go to clubs to hook up. But for urban mass market, guys usually "convene" outside on streets or friends' houses and drink the hell out while playing guitars or videoke. But one thing is certain, in those sessions either one of the guys is a choir or ex choir member, a band member, or simply a frustrated videoke or amateur singing contest veteran. But the pinnacle of it all is the usual town or neighborhood fiesta, where houses are open to visitors with food or drinks to offer. The Spanish blood in us. Free-spirited. That's why we are called the Latin of Asia.

Its a Common thing here in the Philippines. if theres a Drinking Session theres also a singing. Even there is no Videoke or Karaoke if theres a Guitar or any kind of music instrument they are always want to sing. Even in a Mourn or in a Funeral they are singing from dusk till dawn, It doesnt matter if your voice are good or not atleast you are enjoying it. Mostly im a guitarist in our place if theres a mourn of funeral because theres a lot of people drinking and they always want to sing. 😁 Fact: Theres a lot of people requesting of songs to me as a guitarist in the Mourn. it feels they are in the Restobar or videoike bar.😅😆

Im glad to here that Philippines change your perspective on how to learn singing . In fact, filipinoes learn how to sing by imitating artist and through that, we can learn different dinamics that can be useful in any type of singing. Even us , our family who knows how to sing, when we are watching a singing contest from other countries and see that the judges are really amazed by the performer , we would just say "yeah. He / she can sing." (Not all the time cause there's a lot of great singers around the globe) then talks about the technical aspects of that performance. Sa Inuman somehow translates to 'Drinking Sessions'. There are karaoke machines for rent all over the Philippines and for middle class families, we usually have one at home. We find excuses to have drinking/singing sessions especially during fiestas, holidays, birthdays or even spontaneous drinking sprees. Filipinos love ballad songs from the 70's-90's when singers were true vocalists. And although we have music classes in schools, we mostly learn from imitating the styles of those singers.

Just to let you know, I am from Cebu City Philippines where Mori Amon came from. This group drinking and singing has been going on in the entire Philippines since I grew up in the 50's, 60's and 70's before Karaoke was invented, it was created by a Filipino who saw the great potential of marketing Karaoke. We have been singing with guitars which I do not really know who brought this musical instrument, probably from Spain. The Americans brought the Piano and it was a big hit in the Philippines. Our Family, now here in Omaha Nebraska still sing every time we gather together. The sad thing is, hardly anybody plays the Piano or Guitar anymore and the new generation are not interested.

"Inuman" (Drinking Session) usually happens during occasions such as birthday, xmas party, office party, fiestas, family reunions and starts after eating. If the party is done during lunchtime, inuman stretches after lunch only until midnight (if done at one's residence. The law prohibits loud noise late at night. But if done at a videoke bar, it can go on until dawn). Sometimes during birthdays, this videoke session goes for 2 days (the day before the birthday and on the birthday itself). Just the Filipino way of relaxing... Doesn't matter if you're in tune or out of tune... The purpose of singing in these occasions is just to have fun so everyone can belt their heart out and those listening tolerate even those not so pleasant singers :-)

This "INUMAN" or Drinking session happens in almost all celebrations (birthdays, christening, reunions, get togethers) when the meal (usually lunch or dinner) is finished and drinks are brought out (usually around 2pm). Drinking just goes on and on until everyone is knocked out by alcohol (can go as late as 2am). To keep the energy in these gatherings, videoke machine is always available for those who want to sing (whether or not they're good singers). People simply sing for fun. Aside from these gatherings, there are so many KARAOKE BARS where people go when they want to enjoy because singing is perceived as a way of having fun, relaxing and de-stressing. Where many cultures dance away their mood, we Filipinos sing away our mood.

to the question about where and when do these things happen - first off inuman means a drinking session. the where - KTV bars are to me entirely different from restaurant or pubs or places that serves home cooked food and alcohol (we just call those eateries, locally Karenderya). Basically you go to KTV bars to sing, these places serves food and alcohol to enhance the experience, you're there to have fun with friends, chill out, but you're there to first and foremost - sing. there are lots of restaurants that have live music and some places where costumers can jam with the hired artists on stage - basically they ask the audience if there's anyone who like to sing on stage and to come up and do so, feel free. As to the when, yes we have the 12pm to 1pm break and we also call that siesta time - spanish influence but we do not do karaoke during that time - most people eat and watch tv or surf the net, there are those who sleep, maybe listen to music. we have these singing and drinking hangouts after work during the weekdays - generally after 5pm, i've seen people rig the audio set ups in offices or schools for a videoke session before going gome - but drinking there is a no no, unless the office is having a christmas party or something - but generally we do that in KTV places or at home with friends or family. during the weekends and applicable holidays - you can do that shit all day - maybe stop at 10pm, cause you know the neighborhood's gotta sleep

"Inuman", from the word"inom", which means drink (the act of drinking). But "Inuman" means a drinking session. A lot of drinking sessions come with a lot of videoke singing (karaoke for you).

Karaoke in residential areas would only be allowed until 11pm in most part of the Philippines. After that, it's gonna be considered as public distubance.

Funny thing about me being not into singing is I know a lot of songs as early as from the 60s its because of the singing culture here.. You can hear them blasting the kareoke.. music is popping anytime of the day upto 10 pm cause its the curfew..
