Can the line be converted to heavy rail at a future date if the line is ever congested. Because it looks good on paper but with only two carriages per vehicle it has limited capacity.
@MiguelLopez-qi8wh6 жыл бұрын
They should converge the green and Crenshaw lines so the Crenshaw line can take the route to Redondo beach (and possibly Torrance, in the future). They should make the green line go north past Marina Del Rey and Venice to go to Santa Monica and connect to the expo line (i know this isnt planned but itd be pretty cool). So the Green line would go from Norwalk to Santa Monica and the Crenshaw line would go from Redondo beach to Expo/Crenshaw (and maybe an extension to Hollywood to connect the Red/Purple lines in the future)

Can the street level portion be elevated or install gates to protect the trains? REALLY HATE the street running portion in our rail system!!!
@mattcastg51707 жыл бұрын
Frederick Leung it's too late for that now, the line has been under construction for several years so major design/engineering changes such as this just aren't possible. I'm with you though, the worst part of our rail system is the street running segments, the blue line in particular has a couple segments that really should be grade separated. Metro heard all this before too, during the project development there was vocal calls by local residents to grade separate more of the line. In particular many residents were calling for the route to be underground through the Park Mesa Heights neighborhood, which is really the only significant stretch of the line that isn't running along an old rail right of way or grade separated (either underground or elevated), with trains instead running in the street median through this stretch. Metro however refused to budge as the cost associated with tunneling an additional 2 miles (or so) and building more stations underground would be far too costly and greatly exceed the project budget, which had already significantly increased from original cost estimates. Metro further said the added benefits of running the trains underground through this area (namely faster train speeds, less neighborhood and street traffic disruption) did not justify the added the costs especially given the relatively modest expected ridership level on the line. We can be happy however with the fact that much of the line is grade separated (or running in an old ROW with limited street intersections), much more of it being underground/elevated than many originally envisioned. Metro has enacted a system ride policy detailing their grade separation criteria, with the criteria being the same across the county. If a particular intersection meets the criteria then metro designs a project to be grade separated through that area. I don't recall the exact criteria but you can find it on Metros website, I mostly has to do with the congestion and traffic speed of intersections. The denser the area the more likely grade separation. Expected ridership levels also can play a part as corridors where ridership is expected to be high are more likely to justify the cost of making a line fully underground (or elevated) and from an operations standpoint heavy ridership corridors being grade separated can allow for longer trains and more frequency, street running trains are limited in the length they can be and the frequency they can run since traffic and traffic signals limit frequency potential.
@theexmann7 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Though if it was all underground, we would only have about half the rail we have now because of cost. And above ground has been voted down by residents over and over which is why we have ground level. However, the Blue Line has paid its dues and deserves to be upgraded so it's more problematic stations should be grade separated now.
@davidnissim92036 жыл бұрын
There is only one street running section on the line, between the tunnels on either end of the Hyde Park station. All other at-grade street crossings on the line are planned to be gated.
@ElevationStationProductions7 жыл бұрын
Why does the train pop up just to go back underground?
@baileyyordnoff24097 жыл бұрын
Has to do with how much space they can allocate for the train's right-of-way, and also to avoid awkward intersections with vehicles and pedestrians.
@theexmann7 жыл бұрын
It does that because it looks like Crenshaw is narrower in those sections.

@lookatthisguyhere77125 жыл бұрын
mittim80 no, it needs to be redesigned so the lines connect and both lines hit the same platform. The idea that they spent billions on this line and cheaped out at the terminus, which means no one seat ride LAX to Downtown or Santa Monica, is beyond absurd. One of the biggest engineering blunders in the history of Metro

0:18 Hold up. The Expo Line runs left (DTLA) right (Santa Monica) in this frame. The K line station is on the LEFT side of this dangerous stroad called Crenshaw. Right now you're forcing people coming from Santa Monica to walk across Crenshaw to get to the first station in the K line. That's negligent design. People are going to miss their trains from waiting for this stoplight and die from standing on the side of the stroad. Crenshaw needs to be narrowed and slowed down. There needs to be bus only lanes and pedestrian islands at a bare minimum.

@mariusfacktor35972 жыл бұрын
Look at all the negligently designed 5-7 lane stroads in this video. THESE are the problem. This is why we can't walk or ride our bikes in this city. We NEED to convert these to narrow streets with bus lanes and separated bike paths.

As someone who moved from East Coast, you really need to change your carriage cars. 3 cars to fit on a platform are not enough to move a city of millions. Also, the seat arrangement is done by someone w/no experience. No standing room. Make seats parallel to train window, not perpendicular. What poor decision making. Either that or run more trains more frequently. I take the Expo line around, love it, no car, but you gotta improve if you want to really change LA into major metropolis like London, Tokyo, NYC.

So Crenshaw gets to be underground, but not the expo or blue lines in downtown la? What a joke
@theexmann7 жыл бұрын
The Expo line does go underground near USC, but for only a short section to get around the sharp curve at Figueroa. Also, the Expo line is on a dedicated right of way for a good chunk of it as is the Crenshaw line. Blue line is understandable since it was built over 20 years ago, but it now needs to be upgraded with a few above ground station grade separations.
