As a boom operator, the FIRST thing I do on any job is check the ground conditions! If you have no stable platform, you have no safe platform. If in doubt, ground guards (plastic sheets that spread the load). Some of our machines weigh 21 metric tonnes, so that needs to be solid. Not for the 1st time I have called a job off until the contractor agreed to lay a base of ground guards. After all, if the machine tips over and I hadn't done my inspections before putting it on site, I'm the one going to jail....

Proper training fr - rigging, lifting, & crane operation, is mandatory, to prevent stupid accidents.Plus common sense goes a long way.
