I am Latvian. And I have noticed that movies only use Latvia because people don't know about Latvia. Most of the information they got is wrong. Such as holes, they say about climbing a mountain in Latvia about a curse. But their isn't even any mountains in Latvia.

As for Holes, even if we were to believe the Yelnats family lived in the hilliest region of Latvia, and probably southeast Latgale, or central Vidzeme, my big problem was perhaps that male Latvian first names almost always end with a S, much like last names. And in Lizzie McGuire it seems like they believed jellied meat to be a Latvian dish (IIRC jellied meat is an Ukrainian dish, kholodets, like chicken Kyiv) New Girl... the eighth-best basketball team in Latvia's professional basketball league would have a fighting chance to make it to the Latvian top division since the eighth-best team could either mean the second-best in the LBL2 (if the top second-division team can fight for promotion to the LBL, which has only 6 teams, in which case Winston was loaned to BK Kraslava, and not traded away, in the Latvian equivalent of the trade deadline) or eighth in the LBL2, which is still pretty good basketball, since LBL2 has 22 teams, but the TV show portrays LBL3 to be playing on uphill courts to no crowds at all (BK Kraslava might sometimes play to no crowds at all, but it sure as hell doesn't play on an uphill court).
