Go to towns like Kuldīga, Cēsis or Sigulda!! In Rīga its too hard to feel comfortable because of loud environment, everyone smoking at streets, agressive drivers and russian vibe..

Funny enough, the biggest club in the Baltics - La Rocca, was almost next to that place. Actually, there were many clubs under one roof and a casino in a former theatre. It was a hive of night activity :) Also, in Riga, their average salary is about 1800-2000 EUR per month in 2024, so the prices are quite normal, obviously there are cheaper places, like kebab shops etc, but come on, I don't know about Manchester, but for London, or Norway, these prices are laughably cheap :) Anyway, enjoy your trip and have a good "adventure" :) Come to Riga, Latvia in the summer, there is a lot of to explore. P.S In Riga about 40% of the population speaks rusian as the first language, but that doesn't mean they are rusians at all (like me), it was like English for British Empire colonies. In the whole of Lithuania, the whole rusian speaking population is less than 10%.

And Cēsis, Kuldīga and Jūrmala! I had to snuck in my little city Cēsis because it's my birth place and I want more exposure from foreigners about it 😂 but, jokes aside, it's really beautiful and historical, with a Livonian Order medieval castle and castle park attached to it - ready to visit. Also Cēsis has Old Town, albeit much smaller than Rīga's Old Town, still worth to visit.

Sorry to hear that the staff was rude. Please accept my apologise! I am Latvian myself and i can admit that we are often grumpy. But please next time visit other places such as Kuldīga and Saulkrasti. Saulkrasti has a very nice beach and there is a very good cafe called Baltā kāpa (white dune) , they have very delicious garlic bread with paprika mayo. Cēsis is a nice town. Rundāle palace is beautiful.

Lithuania has a rather small percentage of people with roots in russia. Like rusians are minority in Lithuania. But in Latvia percentage is much much higher and they are not really a minority from what I know. Thus more russian speaking people in Latvia
@loganj.harris34398 күн бұрын
In Latvia, russians are below 30%. Russian language speakers (as first language) could be around 35% because of belarussians, ukrainians from soviet times when they didn't learn Latvian. But it is kind of improving every year and new generation are in general "more latvian" than their parents ever been. In 90s it was way way worse.
@Crimson199777 күн бұрын
Russians ARE a minority in Latvia. We got harsher russification programmes from stalin but we survived and the situation is a lot better than it used to was when we regained independence in 90's.
@martinskesteris86647 күн бұрын
They are not a minority in Riga. And even nationwide it's only 62 % Latvian. Result of ruzzification, deportation and mass immigration of soviet colonists, many of whom still feel so entitled that they don't even bother speaking the language of the country they are (unfortunately) citizens of.
@loganj.harris34397 күн бұрын
@@martinskesteris8664 No one is doubting that in big cities their presence is higher. But even in Riga, it's very close to 50/50 in terms of native speakers. You can't simply put every non-latvian in russian speaking category. There is enough people from other countries who speak english daily. Latvian seems way less present in Riga only because of the culture and average characteristics. Latvians tend to be more silent, less talkative in general than Russians which gives this impression like you hear Russian everywhere in Riga.
@martinskesteris86647 күн бұрын
@@loganj.harris3439 have a look at the election results. All big cities have huge ruzzian populations, and Riga, and even more so Daugavpils and Rēzekne are more ruzzian than Latvian in terms of language. And the election results do not even include the noncitizens who don't vote but represent some 10 % too. And, guess what, they would vote for some prokremlin shitparties just like 90% of those with citizenship.

I hope you enjoyed Rīga and Latvia in general, mate! We have more places to visit. Other people have already mentioned places to visit, but I really recommend you to visit the place I'm from - Cēsis. I don't think that you will be disappointed. It's approximately 2hour drive away from Rīga by bus. Cēsis is very historical and if you're interesed in Castles and beautiful parks, and just historic monuments in general there will be plently in Cēsis. Also another great place is Kuldīga, it's much further away, but when and if you go there you will understand why it's called the "Pearl of Courland" (fun fact, Kuldīga also is the home of the widest waterfall in whole Europe, no kidding) and Kuldīga also has it's fair share of historical buildings and infrastructure. I probably should stop saying "historical", because if I think about it, all our towns and cities have a lot of history behind their walls 😅 Anyways, last but not least, I recommend you to visit "Rundāles Palace" it's 1 hour or so drive away from Rīga, it's got a nickname "Versailles of Latvia" because it's grandest historical Palace we have and it used to be a home to Duke of Courland in the 18th century. But go there in summer to also get a chance to see the beautiful French gardens when they're all blooming and all polished up!

''We went to Lithuania, so we have super high expectations of Latvia'' You went to the richer and safer country of baltic states, and had high expectations of the poorest and most dangerous country in Baltic States..... What? ... ''Latvia has Half Population of Lithuania'' with the Current situation in Ukraine and all the people that fled, the populations in eastern europe outside of the countries that are at conflict has risen, Latvia usually had 1.9M and Lithuania 2.7M, now Latvia is probably around 2M-2.2M and Lithuania is like 3M, I dont know how the education system works in Britain but i thought you guys would be somewhat smarter than us, because 2M x2 is not 3M. ... And 12 Euro for a Buffet Plate is not expensive, the only reason it might be expensive is it because its in like Riga Center - The Rich Area of Riga, Go Kebab Place in like Ķengarags or Maskavas Priekšpilsēta... get big kebab for cheaper than that, 12 Euro is still cheap for what they serve.... decent food in resturants goes to like 15-20 Euro for a Average Portion, If in UK a Average Portion AT ANY PLACE costs cheaper than 12 Euro.... I am packing my bags and moving to UK, No Way you guys make that much money and have the cheapest food in the world... people move to germany because they pay x3 times more and their taxes are nearly x2 times less for the sacrifice of their food and groceries being x2-x3 times more in price, UK is like x2-x3 more pay.... less taxes.... and CHEAPER FOOD? If This is a True fact... you should publish it somewhere on internet - UK Population will increase by another 100% in a year if food is so cheap
