At 10:17 he is talking about things which happened in Germany. A neonazi group called NSU murdered several foreigners and the secret service who had observed the terrorists couldn't provide all the files, because they had been destroyed by error. Since this speech was made shortly afterwards to a German audience Rether probably thought there was no need to say: "Oh wait that was us", because the audience would figure it out on their own.

good explanation just a small correction it was not the secret service ( or better his german counterpart BND), it were several institutions called LandesVerfassungsschutz ( something like homeland security) on federal state level. The destruction by error was only the official version (like in thuringia the president of the institution himself shredded all paper files "by error" and later said on protocol "It was by accident as in the storage room the paper files about the right wing nationalist groups were put on the left side and so he got confused as he thought he is deleting the left wing paper files". Why the boss is doing the basic work on its own was not explained and why the left wing observation papers should be deleted long before the storage time is over was not explained too. So anyone can decide on it's own how likely that scenario is (not to mention other accidents that happened to important evidence material.

I am a little older (could be as old as your parents) and my view of America has changed somewhat. As a child and teenager I did visit a few European countries: Spain, France, Great Britain, Benelux and Denmark, but my first trip without my parents was to New York. Later I was even engaged to a German-American and in the 1980s I even had a permanent residence permit for the USA, but my partner at the time did not want to live in the USA. We often went to the USA, but we stayed in Germany. (I - at the time 22 years old - could also have imagined living in the USA). - I cannot imagine the latter at all today. The USA has developed so many disadvantages and in retrospect I am glad to be able to live in Germany. I also say this because as a travel enthusiast I have visited 33 other European countries, several times. Scandinavia might be an alternative to Germany, but you live in darkness there for half a year, which is a bit too long for me. And by the way, I know Great Britain quite well, but compared to Germany it's a complete shithole.

That was a program on the German public broadcaster ARD. You will hardly find this on private television or in the new media, because it's all about ratings and clicks, so nothing uncomfortable is broadcast, at least not for their audience and those who invest their advertising millions in the medium. I don't know how it is in Latvia, but look at the UK, US and Australia with Murdoch, for example.

The fact that we are allied with America is not because we love America. American policy after the Second World War (which can be described as the last morally justifiable war against the criminal Nazi regime) was too immoral and in some cases in contravention of international law. We are not blind in this regard. But Germany's central problem is that it is too big and ( economically ) powerful to be neutral and at the same time too weak to be able to compete on its own in world politics. So we need a world power as an ally. At present, only the USA, China and, with some limitations, perhaps Russia are theoretically possible allies of this kind. And within this illustrious group, the USA is simply the smallest of three evils.

You asked for my german perspective on america, here it comes: First of all: America helped Germany alot in dark times. Once Hitler and the Nazis were defeated Germany had te be built up again. Not only Building but also social and working systems. The entire political process changed and we became a stronger democracy. America had a big impact in that too with freedom of speech, equality and liberty. But besides of that really important and needed help we got to become to what we see ourselves as today, we do see EVERY bad thing they did. The most Germans I know would rather sell both kidneys than moving to america. Socialsystem is fucked up, Gun-Laws are fucked up, a lot of drugs in bigger cities, police brutality and law-enforcement from a differend book. Also Germany hasn't forgotten what we did to the world. We know how bad those thing can turn out. We really like Democracy and we love the base conpect of the EU with all it's Freedom it offers all EU-Citizens. And yes, it is very sad to see that the once so strong America, which brutally Ruled the World and helped us to get on our feet again, now breaks appart. People are getting into their "believes" instead of their actual knowledgebase. Today the directly spoken truth doesnt matter anymore in the US because so many people are delusional enough to just ignore it or disvalidate it in there head in an instant once spoken. We kinda have the same problem over here with some hardcore theorists and re-appearing nationalism stuff but the major amount of citizens disapprove those movements, especially the AFD. Hope that helped to see the situation through the eyes of one german individual in his mid 20's

US Americans, who all time Americans as they might think America is just them. Geography? Not the lesson they ever learned - or will learn. At the age of 12 i thought it might be very nice to live in the USA.... after age 18 my mind changed completley. I would never like to live in the USA: Trump is an idiot, healthcare s*ucks, and no one cares for another except maybe family members. US people didn't even wann know more than 4 blocks around their own habitat. And always complaining, when they visit other countries. "Well, y should i've could know that?". Hey, never heard about google or wikipedia? The stupidity in that is not that US Americans r dumb, they just didn't wanna know. I was told by name, that i have be french.... my name says it tho. I was born and raised in Hamburg germany, and an US guy told me, that i was wrong, cause my tells him tho. That is just the reflextion of the US education system. Thanks for reacting.
