Attending his live shows is truely a cathartic experience. Almost spiritual. Similar to what he did here. He crushes you with the worst of mankind and then builds you up again with beacons of hope. And he uses pauses and his body language like few else to hammer his messages home without ever raising his voice.
@biniaddi

Exactly! I was in tears after his live show last year and needed to take some deep breaths on the way home and think about my life and privileges. The title of his show has been "Love" for years now and it keeps circling the same themes of climate change, fascism and all sorts of depressing topics. And yet you leave with a feeling of hope and love. ❤ I think he really is a philosopher and more people would need to listen to him. The thing that makes him qualify as a "comedian" is that he sits at the piano for the whole show only playing one song at the very end and keeps randomly eating bananas. 😅

Hagen is really top tier, many cant stand him because he is very direct and can be very hard on some topics. His intentions are still viable, he want to bring change not from the top. His concept is the philosophy of the age of enlightenment. The society has to change to change the world. He often points the finger not only on politicans and "them above us" but on society itself, because we created what we dont like and we are often too lazy for change. Many carbarett acts dont use this style of storytelling and only focus on the politicans and elites.

Hagen Rether is awesome. This clip is from a mixed show, but when you go to see him live on a solo show, like other people wrote before me, they make take 3 or even more hours. Sometimes he takes long breaks between sentences, forcing his audience to endure the silence together with him. Then, after talking for like two hours, he likes to make a joke that goes "Ok then, maybe we should get started now, I've got so much text prepared for you and it's already like 10.30 pm...". Similar to Pispers he is mostly speaking the truth in a quite poignant way, of course from his own perspective but most of the facts are true. I did cry several times during some of his live shows, because he can stir up a mixture of shame, guilt and anger inside you, but you also get to laugh a lot. Oh and he's quite a decent piano player too.

I absolutely love Hagen Rether and what he has to say. I have been to so many of his shows I cannot count them anymore. Many people might feel defeated because he really does not shy away from the unconfortable truthts. But for him it is always about what we as a society can do. It is not about the big politicians and leaders - it's about his audience. And it is about love for the world and for people. Every show that he gives is called "Liebe" which means "love". For me his words are hopeful. They are optimistic but without ignoring how the world actually is.

You asked about Guido Knopp. He was a Gernan historian, notorious for his Hitler obsession and documentaries like "Hitler's secret army", "Hitler's last secretary", "Hitler's mysterious diarrhea". Hagen Rether is my hero, I saw him live once, he is a very intense and charismatic performer, absolutely worthwhile seeing on stage including his piano playing. Georg Schramm would also be an absolute must, but here I think it will be really difficult if you are not a native speaker. The English subtitles are often rubbish and do by far not convey what the artist is delivering. Also, some knowledge of German politics, institutions, society, celebrities and so forth is of course helpful when following this kind of satire and political cabaret. All the more I find it astounding that you show so much interest in German culture, society and mentality. Thanks for your interest, man, I appreciate it.

Volker Pispers and Hagen Rether, two masterclass heroes of german political Kabarett. I´ve seen Pispers live one day and watched most of his and Rether´s content here... it´s dramatic, how clear and obvious things are in this modern world - and on the other hand the facts don´t reach the masses. But as Rether says here: it is forbidden to give up or hide behind the "nothing changes"-phrase - which is nothing else than searching for a justification to be a lazy badass...

Wutbürger is a quite new word in Germany. It means pople who are angry. It's exactly what he described before. I often say people with built-in bad mood. Often they have a lot, like a family, a house and a job, but they decided, that all is terrible. There is always a target, like refugees, the green party or even worse the whole society. Often not possible to understand the reasons of their fundamental opposition. Sometimes they repeat what is written in Germanys biggest turret blade "Bild", which is owned by American KKR Corporation. They invested a lot in fossil energy and hated the German switch to renewable energy. They spread a lot of lies including that one law (Gebäudeenergiegesetz) was written by the green party. Most people isn't clear, that this law was from the former government and was only changed a bit by the new government. But this also means, that the mass media away from KKR did a poor job in Germany. The truth should be spread if KKR makes a disinformation campaign. That means, not all is that OK in Germany, like it looks with the lot of satire. Nearly all press is owned by a lot of conservative owners. It's not always a sign of quality, if the truth has to be put into jokes.

Being German i just came across your Channel via the Video "Reaction To German Comedian Roasting UK, USA, Germany & Russia (Michael Mittermeier - Das Blackout)" And in one part of that Video you ask if it's really true that in the 1980s etc. you basically got whole Classes focusing on Shame and being guilty. And me being born in 1986 and went to School in the 1990s-early 2000s: Even then that was the Case. In Fact as Teenagers with our WW2 Veteran Grandpas naturally felt very attacked a la "I was born in the 1980s, why should i feel bad?" I don't know about the 1970s and 1980s but god damn in the 1990s and early 2000s our History Classes were so insanely focused on "Germans Bad" we ended up with t he Opposite of what Teachers thought they reach with that kind of Education. I still remember 12yo Students jokingly saying stuff like "Once a Year we got Santa Claus, but 3 times a Day we got Holocaust." Definitely wasn*t a good Decision by German School Boards to be this extreme and unhinged. On the upside i heard School and History Class nowadays in Germany is more "balanced". So you learn all about the War Crimes but you aren't actually told by your Teacher how your Grandpa at Home should be in Jail and how you should feel guilty. I hope that's true because it definitely was ridiculous back in the Day as Michael Mittermeier mentioned including after his Time when i went to School. Prost & Cheers from the Bavarian Alps

I've been wanting to recommend him to you but haven't had the time to find anything with good English Subtitiles for you. I missed this one apparently. 😁 I really like his take on the meat (and other animal products) industry. But since I know that you eat meat I didn't want to "disrupt" your comfort and recommend those to you. I'm glad that you found him though.

Hagen Rether is really thoughtful and shows how we fail in seemingly simple issues - like why don't we do this or that, it's simple, but we're incapable. You can hear him saying "I don't get it" a lot like he has a point of view as an outside observer to humanity and if you strip away what we're all used to and don't question anymore it's so true that many things are unbelievable stupid. As an agnostic you may enjoy an older act regarding a headline "We are Pope" ("Wir sind Papst") when Ratzinger became Benedikt XVI. In just some sentences he lays out how hypocritical a church is (here it's catholic, but I'm pretty sure Hagen dislikes all religions).

He has a very intellectual, artistic and slightly melancholic style and you can feel that he might burst into song at any moment. He kinda reminds me of Georg Kreisler. I love German cabaret.

"Wutbürger" is a German term that can be translated to "angry citizen" in English. It refers to individuals who express their dissatisfaction, frustration, or anger with the government, political decisions, or societal issues. Wutbürger often engage in public protests, voicing their concerns passionately and sometimes vehemently. The term gained prominence in Germany in the context of protests against various political and social issues. And this is in almost every known case, extreme right wing politics. Thats why Hagen says: Luther was an Wutbürger that wouldnt even fit in PeGiDa. ("PEGIDA" stands for "Patriotische Europäer gegen die Islamisierung des Abendlandes" in German, which translates to "Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamization of the West" in English. It is a far-right and anti-Islam political movement that originated in Germany. PEGIDA organizes public demonstrations to voice opposition to what they perceive as the increasing influence of Islam in European countries, particularly in relation to immigration and cultural changes. The movement has sparked significant controversy and debate in Germany and beyond.) Wutbürger and PeGiDa is like Football Player and Football Club

Regarding Guido Knopp, he's an author / tv moderator who's produced about a million historical documentaries, things like "Hitler's Henchmen", While mostly accurate, events are often dramatized and he's also been criticized for downplaying the role of the general populace or the Wehrmacht so it's hard to say if he's a net positive for education...

03:21 Guido Knopp is a Historian and Journalist who helped to create a series of TV documentaries about different aspects of the Nazi era for the German public broadcaster ZDF. The shows aired back in the 1990s and the early 2000s (The first and prly best-known of these series is called "Hitlers Helfer"- Hitler's helpers- about men like Göring, Goebbels, Himmler or Eichmann). The shows were aimed at reaching a mainstream audience and topics were thus often treated rather superficially, which is one of the main points of criticism about his work.
