This is heartbreaking, i feel horrible for those currently suffering. My area is prone to tornadoes instead of hurricane and i can only imagine all that flooding and destruction. Thank you for remembering the elderly, they often are overlooked, appreciate the work you put into the video and thoughtful commentary, thank you as always

The World Meteorological Organization makes a list. The list is comprised of male and female names from the region where the hurricane is likely to form. The names go in alphabetical order and switch off between the sexes. So the first storm has a name starting with A, the second gets a name that starts with B and is of the opposite sex to A, there are a few letters left out, the last letter used is W. If there are more storms after all the letters are used then the Greek Alphabet is used. There is a 6 season list, with names from A to W for each season. They get their names when they become Tropical Storms. 39 MPH sustained winds. (1km = 0.6 mi.) If a storm is particularly bad it can have it's name retired. Said retired name will be replaced with another name that has the same first letter, and the same gender.

Since the 1950's hurricanes and typhoons in most parts of the world have been given human names. The names are selected years in advance. Each year has an alphabetical list, from A to Z, and the names repeat every six years. The names come from various meteorological organizations, depending what area of which ocean they occur in, but I think the World Meteorological Organization oversees the naming. Storms usually start as low pressure areas that develop into tropical depressions, then tropical storms, then hurricanes, then weaken into post-tropical storms. Once a tropical storm reaches windspeeds of 39 MPH (63 KPH), they are assigned the next name on the list and retain that name through all the stages. If a storm is bad enough, especially in the number of deaths, the name is retired from the list and another name that starts with the same letter is added. There will never be another Hurricane Helene. But right now there are three active hurricanes in the north Atlantic / Gulf of Mexico -- Kirk, Leslie and Milton -- and unless they cause a lot of damage those names will be re-used in 2030.
