Different instrumentation, a specific arrangement, and the bass having some bars to do some impro over the theme. Saying that he is just playing the bass line is a way of discrediting their effort.

@@orlando-o7u Jaco learned to play the bass at 17, he played with Weather Report at 24. That is truly genious. There is no doubt about the virtuosity of this player (as I stated before), but it is not even close.

Nem me atrevo a entrar nos melhores adjetivos que passam qualificar cada um da melhor maneira que merecem, porque seria até abuso de minha parte devido a tanta qualidade em incríveis músicos e até os melhores elogios ja não podem expressar o privilégio de vislumbrar tanta técnica em apenas 4:13. Great playing from the bass player and the band. Fabulous arrangement - well done, it honours the Weather Report original while moving seamlessly to a big band context. Special call out to the drummer who is really in the pocket. Sound quality and recording are also brilliant, better than the original Weather Report studio recording. All round world class stuff. I would love to hear more of this Michael Pipoquinha & Latvian Radio Big Band combination, is there more?

I've listened to it 5-6 times, just to get my head around it, the tempo is slower than the original and I don't like the way the bassist plays some of Jaco's phrases. Should i be banned for critiquing music for the rest of my life? By the way, the musicians are highly skilled, i just don't like this cover.

@@jimch.9961 There is nothing wrong with having an opinion, but that opinion should be based upon something more tangible than simply saying a slower "tempo" or certain "phrasing" causes this to be a thumbs down performance. This is unarguably virtuoso bass playing. I have heard this particular composition by Jaco interpreted by several different bassists. For example, Brian Bromberg's version off of his Jaco CD slows the tempo WAY DOWN and he plays it on an upright bass. Marcus Miller uses a slap technique on his interpretation, Mohini Day layers her version and creates improvised riffs not found in the original. Oh and I also witnessed Jaco himself play this in concert with Weather Report back in the late 70's. I think that he would give a thumbs up to this big band treatment of his tune. Jim appreciate it for what it is, not for what it isn't....
