Really this is one of the best twists and it really works within the new framework of the show, but still referencing the novel and how Claudia tricks Lestat. The show actually raises the stakes for her tricking him and shows the depth of her planning and her intelligence. She doesn't just trick him, but lays a false trail by making him think he knows what the trick is and then flips it on him. Lestat's cockiness in his belief that he could be a step ahead of them was his undoing. Claudia's only mistake here is that she doesn't personally load him into the incinerator. She left it to Louis who couldn't get it done and we all know that's going to come back to (forgive the pun) bite her.

Amen to that. Claudia allowed Lestat to think he was one step ahead of them while she is in fact ten steps ahead of him. She succeeds where Louis fails because her judgment of Lestat and the situation is not clouded by love. Also, she is not necessarily ruled by emotion which allows her to take stock of things objectively. Louis's love/obsession with Lestat prevents him from seeing Lestat's duplicitousness when it comes to Antoinette and failing to see that Lestat was on to the plan. Lestat's cockiness and vanity are weaknesses that not only prevent him from seeing other possible outcomes, but are vices that rule him and make it difficult to adjust to things he doesn't expect.

The second chess game seems to foreshadow how Claudia defeats Lestat in real life, with many parallels: (1) Claudia was attacking and tried to lure Lestat into capturing her bishop. But he didn’t take the bait, saying, “One bishop can be captured, but... I see the trap.” The bishop represents the poisoned twin whom Lestat avoided drinking from. (2) Lestat was on the defensive but was still confident when he said, “Rook protects the king, and your queen has been neutralized.” This refers to Antoinette protecting Lestat and neutralizing Claudia. (3) When Lestat realised he was losing, he muttered, “Queen on one side, rook on the other.” This points to Claudia and Louis teaming up to beat him. (4) Although Claudia had reached a winning position, she refused to finish him off with a checkmate. This clearly resembles how she and Louis failed to actually kill Lestat when he was helples

You are so right about all of this. At first, I thought that it was only Louis that failed to kill Lestat, but in reality it is Claudia's failure as well because she left it to Louis. Its one of the few things that nag at me about this part because Claudia (who has thought through and saw everything through up to this point) doesn't take the steps to personally see to Lestat being burned to ashes. Instead she leaves it to Louis which is an incredible lapse in judgement. I mean, Claudia knows that Louis is wishy-washy when it comes to Lestat. He was even having second thoughts at the ball when he dances with Lestat so for her to leave this very important task to Louis is not a logical character move given her previous attention to detail. And yeah I know Lestat's survival has to happen given the role he plays in what goes down with Claudia later, but still it bothers me.

He doesn't and that angers her, which is why in the beginning of S2 (the first episode came out last Sunday) she's still mad at him. She wants him to kill lestat because that means he willingly goes along with her, that given what lestat has done to both of them, Louis hates him as much as she does and is ready to follow her away from New Orleans. To be honest, that would make far more sense because there is no way he could have believed such an arrangement would have ever worked out in the end. Like, there isn’t enough delusion and I refuse to believe that Lestat would ever be that dumb. XD He literally wouldn’t let Claudia leave again because he was concerned about Louis and knew her being around was keeping him somewhat content-yet he thought killing Claudia and replacing her with the woman he knew Louis hated would somehow work out? When Louis had already contemplated suicide the second time Claudia was going to leave (with his permission no less)? When one of the conditions of Lestat being accepted back in the first place was he was suppose to kill Antoinette? Hell, when Louis has given him the silent treatment and/or the cold shoulder for less? Unless she already had her ticket, and considering how he tended to treat Ant as a means to and end/pawn, I can believe he had a plan to cut her out after Claudia was killed. Heck, I could see him do it as a way to appease Louis in a gesture to ‘make them even’ and truly ‘start over’.

Heartbroken that Bailey Bass was recast and won't come back in season 2 due to contract/scheduling issues! I wasn't sure at first but she really grew on me as perfect Claudia! She killed the role! Especially knowing that... ...*BOOK SPOILERS BELOW*... ....season 2 was probably going to be her last season anyway and it would be nice to see her finish what she started and bring Claudia's character to conclusion :( It's not as big of a deal as recasting Louis or Lestat or Armand, but still a huge hit to the show.

I can’t say enough for how good this adaptation is! And this is coming from someone who liked the movie when it came out. The characters are all so much richer and more authentic. It always bugged me that NONE of the 1994 cast tried to give an appropriate accent. Lestat never sounded French, Louis never came across as Creole (despite him oddly claiming to be in the movie) and Claudia never came across as a Southern American girl. There was also zero chemistry in the movie. It was unclear why Louis or Lestat bothered with each other. Finally, having Claudia take off on her own and go to school and research made her progression and eventual win against Lestat plausible. It was silly and rushed in the film. This is incredibly good!

Important thing is they kept the core and heart of the main story. I swear some people are so mad they didn't get the white slaver owner (even though it's never brought up again after chapter 2 of the book) and they're really upset they didn't get 5 year old Claudia having creepy p*do relationship with Louis.

You are firmly in the minority, it looks like. Every single character is improved upon here. Lestat is actually terrifying (and charismatic). We can actually see why Louis loves him in this show. It was a total mystery in the movie. Louis actually has a personality this time. Claudia is believable as being able to outmaneuver Lestat in this adaptation. She was never convincing as an old soul trapped in a young body in the 94 film. It’s all better.

A master can free his slaves. A golden prison is still prison. This Louis actively pursued his profession, but treated his women better than most actually paid his workers, they could leave at anytime, and only took the professor to keep his family from losing their lives in a time where there were so few opportunities for a person of their race. Both professions were wrong, but both had their reasons. It's called an adaptation, so expect adaptations.

You know what this is, this like hiring a 400 lb woman to play Superman and then rewriting the characters background so he is from Draculon instead of Krypton. If they wanted to make a show about a black gay vampire then they should've just done an original show.

oh please… it’s an ADAPTATION + it was other times in this storyline… do you really expected him to be a slave owner in the 20s? this series is adapting all the books, so it’s not just the first book on this season… it has bits and pieces from other instalments as well. also, them making this version of louis black actually ads A LOT of dept into this character.

The only reason the timeframe was changed is because the idoiots who made this shit think historical accuracy is racist. We cant show any form of slavery without someone claiming it glorifies slavery, even though it doesn't.

As everyone has already mentioned, they are lovers in the books. Lestat basically picks Louis because he's beautiful and reminds him of his old ex who died, who is a man btw. Louis is his consort by the end of the book series. You must be talking of the movie, but even then....how the hell do you watch that movie where Lestat baby traps Louis into staying his eternal companion and think they're just bros hanging out! 🤣🤣🤣

For the better. Making Louis and Claudia Creole made for a much more relatable cast and more realistic to 20th century New Orleans which is and was, a VERY black/mixed/creole place. Are you also going to cry about Armand being Spanish in the 94 film and Middle Eastern on this show? He is Ukrainian in the books. Are you going boo hoo about Tom Cruise (an American) playing a French nobleman? If not, your issue is with black people, not race or culture swapping.
