'Lauf' means 'leafe' (on a flower or tree). 'Ey or eyja' means 'an island'. 'An island of leaves' is the meaning of her name. It is a very common name in Iceland so you don't often think about the meaning unless someone asks you; I teach immigrants/foreign students and then sometimes I am obliged to answer. I remember my late father making fun of George Bush ir his name, i.e. 'a bush' not thinking about he was a tree himself. His middle name was 'Vídir' or 'Willow'.
