Your take on the villain the High Evolutionary was exactly what James Gunn was going for. He knew he wasn't going to catch lightning in a bottle in rivaling the power and charisma of Thanos so he went the other direction creating a credible villain that the majority of the audience would hate by his actions and mannerisms.

Easily my new favorite MCU film(and I say that as someone who has pretty much checked out of the MCU due to the dip in quality after Endgame). It's also a film I don't think I'll ever be able to watch without crying.
