Laughing owls are New Zealand's largest owl species that apparently had quite the peculiar list of calls, that are now, unfortunately, lost to time. I hope you enjoy.

For an animal with "laughing" in its name, these lads sure do look grumpy in a lot of these pictures.

Unfortunate to see these birds completely gone, though we are lucky to have photos and records. I think this is the closest we will ever get to Henry swearing-

It's a really big shame. I came across three of the photos while doing research for the video, so that was a really pleasant surprise on my end! And pretty true on that, haha. Only other way would be meeting me in person, lol.

@@HenrythePaleoGuy it’s always a pleasant surprise when an extinct animal feels less distant. I bet you speak obscenely in person lol.

@@GeorgeTheDinoGuy Makes them a lot more tangible. They had such a good shot too at remaining given they were easy to handle like morepork in captivity. And among close friends, definitely, lol.

@@HenrythePaleoGuy maybe there are more photos and records out there, I think as time marches on more archivists will find records and images that shine a light on recently extinct animals.

It would indeed be amazing if a secluded population was found , NZ has a much better program for conservation these days and I’m sure they would spare no effort, if only hey 🤷‍♀️ All the best Jules

It’s sad that so many species are gone and there’s nothing we can ever do to fix it. I’d love to believe that some owls are left or any species is, but it’s always very unlikely. It’s just another lesson for us to ignore as we continue making more species extinct every year : (

It does really show how much more we need to care about our environment and the animals in it. Such a shame that some people can't see the importance in it.

I wonder if these creatures would be a better candidate than some others for ‘de-extinction’, though I have no idea what their nearest surviving relatives are, we can’t clone birds yet, the resulting creature wouldn’t be natural (thus unlikely to behave as such and suitable for integration into the ecosystem), the pressures that caused its demise are not entirely removed, and most of all, the efforts to resurrect the species would be better spent preventing more loss to the environment it once called home. Still, even a domesticated population one day might be better than nothing… (goes off to watch Jurassic park to remind myself why it isn’t better!)

Potentially. Birds would be a lot more challenging to do than mammals by nature of them laying eggs, but advances in potentially doing so have been made over time. Addressing the environmental conditions they end up in definitely take first-priority.

These Owls were attracted by Accordian tunes and were gentle natured. Except for their prey. Another beautiful bird gone extinct by humans. i hate the human race sometimes. It breaks my heart to see these animals gone because of us.
This is “impossible”, but New Zealand is trying anyway.
