This is a four lane ramp and if you look carefully as I back in, the other three are empty.
I chose a nice quiet day to do the filming.
This was the first weekend use of the year so a little out of practice.
The truck is only 2WD thus the reason for the 12,000 lb winch in the front.
I am quite surprised at how many think you need to be in and out of a ramp in two minutes or less regardless of the boat size. Yet there are a hell of a lot of video on youtube with a car or truck being dragged out of the water. People dragging there skegs on the ramp. Slipping and falling. Smoking the tires trying to get out.
The boat truck and trailer are 21,500 lbs trying to drag you down the ramp...

Exaggerating just a bit? The entire video start to end is 28 minutes. Half that is showing the prep lane setup. Less than 15 minutes in the ramp, including some time for explaining. Do you even have a boat? Do you trailer it? Is it 15,500 pounds of boat and trailer? Or a bass boat? Get real...

Patrick (Big Ass Boat Owner) I feel is super knowledgeable on very large boats. In fact... I think he was either Coast Guard or Navy. He helps people just because. Know that videos submitted on KZbin of this magnitude are for your benefit and certainly not his! Remember moving forward. Life lessons....Learn from everyone and everything. Throw out the bad and keep the good.

A lot can go wrong - this guy is meticulous - he has to take his time getting that rig ready - that is a lot of weight and responsibility towing that down the road safely - so what if it takes him a half hour - For most of the time he is out of the way getting ready - very courteous - good damn job!!!

I have done more than my share of towing - cargo, construction equipment only one boat mainly on highways. You have a process that works for you and in my opinion the added safety your process affords the public is well worth the extra time. Hopefully though it’s done in the staging area before taking to the ramp. Thank for for considering other roadway users safety my family and I thank you.

Thanks, Yes many do not understand regardless of how good the brakes are the load will try to keep going. It doesn't take much for even a load like this to bounce and start moving around on a trailer. The load and trailer need to act as a single object.

Hello, best regards. The video is very instructive. I really liked it to motivate me to have a boat. On the other hand, so that you don't forget the fenders, you have to put red flags on the rails, a strategy that I am going to follow for when I have a boat. Thanks for the advice.

A new interesting question... The concept behind BABOAT is that although larger than typical trailer boat (it requires a wide load permit) we bought it intending to travel regionally with it. There are several modifications I have made that allow us to use it both in the water and on land. The most obvious of these is the "boarding ladder" which was actually a "Dock Ladder". We take it to the coast of the Carolina's and South Florida where we have family. Since there seems to be a growing interest I am in progress with several slide show videos explaining past modifications where I took photos but not many videos. We converted all overboard discharge to gray water tank, gray water is recycled for flushing to black water tank. Modifications also include the ability to use RV type pump out facilities. The electrical upgraded to full 240V/50A service with modern RCD protection for use at both RV parks & marinas. The trailer has the storage box for accessories and soon will have a radiator and fans mounted on the back to cool the AC when operated ashore. In addition to these custom modes for ashore use there have been extensive repairs to the interior due to some initial problems, complete helm rewiring and of many accessories. Numerous electronic additions both in place and soon to be added. And I am setting up to better record future "road" trips...

Patrick: enjoyed your launch and recovery video's. Great safety tips. On a non-related item: I notice you have a Garmin transducer on the stern of your boat. Did this replace your raymarine thru hull transducer and was this a improvement. I have a 2008 Sea Ray 290 that has a failed transducer and I'm curious if your setup has any advantages. Thanks Ralph

Mine was a lake boat when I bought it and had no electronics except the Sea Ray dash mounted depth gauge. I picked up a Garmin GPSMAP840xs with Chirp Sonar on a closeout deal. The unit came with a transom mount and it has worked well. I could do a thru hull but that would just be an extra $500-1000 and doesn't seem necessary for what we do. We dont fish mostly use the sonar for reef checking for snorkeling/diving when in Florida. Really got the unit for chart plotter and radar display.

I can save 20 minutes just not filming and talking... Others have pointed out the time to, but I have a process and it gives me confidence in the safety of it. I started as it is when I arrive. I wont tow a mile without the full straps and and setup for towing, batteries off, out drives blocked, etc. I'm not going to blow a trim line and arrive to find one of the drives was dragging on the pavement. I do start and warm up on cuffs before I leave home, engines are fully checked out. Gear loaded etc.

Be aware of several things for safety. The weight of the boat (but you are not lifting the entire weight it is a rolling load approx 50%). The strength of the line/cable. The strength/pull of the winch. My boat is 12,500lb, this video is a 4000lb winch, it proved a little weak and I have since upgraded to a 6000lb winch. The synthetic line is rated 12,000lb breaking strength. And the snap shackle is rated 8000lb. A winch is rated on the first wrap or layer. After that it gets weaker as the line fills the drum. So the winch will stalls at 6000lb or less. Everything else is stronger than the winch. If you have a large/heavy boat stick with quality brands for this, Ronstan or Wichard. www.westmarine.com/ronstan-4-5-16inch-l-x-5-8inch-stainless-steel-standard-s-bail-snap-shackle-147983.html www.westmarine.com/wichard-3-1-2inch-l-stainless-steel-small-swivel-bail-shackle-583916.html They are available from many suppliers.

Be careful…I’m still struggling to prevent the anchor from hooking the winch on the way down while boat slides off trailer I have bunks…,, it’s clearing by inches,, I even removed anchor , but windlass hardware got hooked .. tough to get the right trade off between how deep to get the trailer,, and keeping the bow high enough so windlass clears the trailer winch..
@BigAssBoatOnATrailer
@BigAssBoatOnATrailer 2 ай бұрын
Yes if I backed in any further the stern starts to float on this ramp. Keeping it up and winching down the boat lets it clear the post before the bow drops. This is many years ago now and I have shortened the post a few more inches, gone to a single chock and lowered the winch. But I also have a larger Delta anchor now so still close. I also upgraded to a 6000lb winch and use a snatch block for recovery.

And the other three ramps are empty. And that was with an extra few minutes due to forgetting to hang the fenders, without the distractions of filming and talking it's like 5 minutes in the ramp. This is a 30 foot 10'6" wide boat, rig weights 21,500 pounds. So no I wont rush. Boy tough crowd... ; - )

You're kidding right? It wouldn't work. While the trailer is rated more than enough, 15,000 carrying max, it would have to be completely re-rigged to fit yours. I have I/O you have shafts; rollers would be in the wrong places. Winch post is to far back, axle to far back because your 10' longer and the engines a further forward. And I have no place to put my boat I keep it on the trailer unless I'm actually using it. And I think I'm like six hours from you.

Good thing that's not a busy ramp! Almost 30 minutes to launch a powered Clorox bottle in perfect conditions at that ramp. We have a tidal river with a 5+ knot current and usually windy. I use the midship cleat to run a line to the dock just before splash with enough slack to launch. With my roller trailer I back up enough to where the stern is floating. Release the safety chains and winch then power off or just push off depending on the tide. I position the trailer next to the dock where I can easily board. The entire process takes me about 4 minutes. The ramp is steep enough that my rear truck tires stay dry. Interesting video!

First off, Love your photos of Gloucester, I spent two years serving at Cape Ann Light Station on Thatcher Island with the twin towers... Certainly New England has much steeper ramps and greater tide changes. But part of a roller vs a bunk trailer is you don't need to float the boat off or on. And as with most everyone, I show the entire prep process, in prep parking lane. Less than 9 minutes is in the ramp even with all the filming...
@CapeAnnImages
@CapeAnnImages 3 жыл бұрын
@@BigAssBoatOnATrailer Thanks! Please excuse the term "powered Clorox bottle" that's what us locals call that style of boat. Update: Historians discovered the correct spelling to be "Thacher", somewhere along the lines a "t" was added incorrectly. The wood ramp on the island must have been a challenge at times. My brother-in-law grew up at Eastern Point Lighthouse, his dad was the keeper there. I've had both bunk and roller trailers and by far I prefer roller trailers because they are user friendly at different designs of ramps. Bunks are ok for boats under 15' where most that size they are light enough to lift the bow and reposition. Best Regards, Jay
@BigAssBoatOnATrailer
@BigAssBoatOnATrailer 3 жыл бұрын
Yes the ramp was interesting, especially in the winter. We had a 17' Boston Whaler Montauk with a 25HP, the center keel V was modified with a steel angle to protect it. You got on plane running the boat from the stern at the engine tiller. You aimed for the ramp and when you lost sight over the bow of where the ramp and the water met you cut the throttle, the engine would naturally partial tilt up from the drag, you grabbed it an tilted up and locked. Then you hit the ramp... Would slide up past the breaking waves and the crew ashore would snap the winch line into the bow eye. If the ramp was dry no big deal, but if it was wet or if it was winter iced (then we were in wet suits) it could get very exciting. Slide down into the surf once, very cold and spent the first day drying out all our clothes.

I'm sorry but this is honestly the craziest shit I've ever seen. I launch my 29 da in. Few minutes. My brother launches his 34 scarab in few minutes. This is unbelievable

I guy in boat, 1 guy in truck, back boat in and start it, put boat in reverse and back out. Other guy pulls truck and trailer out. 4 minutes!

Thanks for watching. But the process is for "1 guy" only, single handed launch and recovery. And I didn't make it looking for how others think it should be done. Most people have bunk trailers, bunks are common because they are cheaper. I have used and owned many roller trailers and would not get a bunk style. You don't float on and off rollers, that's the advantage, you don't need to back in so far.

Why would you leave your boat tied up to the launch while you park your truck and trailer? Isn’t it common curtesy to park your boat first AWAY FROM THE LAUNCH, and then driving your truck and trailer to park so that other boaters can launch? Do you always park in the launch? I thought parking in the launch was only for medical or boat emergencies.

These ramps only have the finger docks, there are no other docks or landings.

When we launch we stay out all weekend, typically Friday noon thru Sunday. Sometimes even launch Thursday evening.

This is not the proper way to secure a boat to the trailer.
@BigAssBoatOnATrailer

More than one way to do many things. The over bow strap insures the boat cant over run the trailer/truck in a panic stop. The over stern strap insures the boat and trailer act as a single unit and can not shift or bounce. The stern eyes were trying to pull the boat forward on the rollers to much. The bow chain is fine for preventing it from rolling off, but not enough to satisfy me on the highway.

Way too small of a truck for a 12500 pound 33 foot boat you need a dully truck atleast
@BigAssBoatOnATrailer

Another myth; I can link you to many dually being sunk at ramps... That is a 3/4 ton truck, the 1 ton dually has the same exact engine and actually tows 1,000 pounds LESS, can carry more in the bed but you lose the weight of the heavier axle and extra tires towing.The dually only gives you a little more contact with the pavement. But that doesn't help on wet ramps, the rear tires are always the ones in the slick zone. 4x4 helps more than dually .

So much BS to go through. I bet you get a lot of one finger salutes from everyone waiting to use the ramp or the handicapped spaces you have blocked.

No here in South Carolina folks a very civil. If you look 15 minutes is spent in the prep lane. People are always waved around if we're not ready. And you should see that three other ramp lanes are empty. The whole video is only 30 minutes, do the math. And that's with filming.

@@BigAssBoatOnATrailer I stand by my comment, 15 minutes of boat prep is excessive. Doesn't matter where you are from.
