Laundry Faucet Repair: Replace Leaking Washer Seals

This video will guide you through the process of repairing a laundry faucet that is leaking.
The laundry faucet featured in this video is an old style double lever handle model.
The repair is quite simple and only requires a wrench (14mm in my case) and a flat head screwdriver.
You will need to shutoff your main water supply and then open an upstairs faucet to act as a vent and your laundry faucet to drain the water from the piping.
You will then remove the faucet handles (using a wrench - mine was 14mm) and then remove and inspect the condition of the washer seals. You should bring one of the old washer seals with you to a hardware store so you can be sure to purchase new washer seals of the correct size.
After replacing the washer seal on each faucet handle reinstall them into the faucet body and your laundry faucet will not leak until the seals wear out again.

I am curious why you didn't take off the handle. Wouldn't that make it easier to catch the threads?

Hi Matt, Thank you for your comment/question. I would make sure you used the correct seal washers first but if they were correct and it still leaks perhaps there is something stuck on the surface that the seal sit on. Sometimes you need to put an allen key in and replace corroded keepers (I don't know the correct name) but it's what those rubber o-rings touch on the cartridge.

Thus was working now the handle won't catch and I think it could be the threading. Should I just get another handle? That's my next guess unless I can fix it somehow.

Hi Christian, Yes it can be tricky getting the handle to thread back in because there is all that packing. You will find that you may need to push it in as far as you can first and then try turning the handle. It is sometimes a little finicky and will only catch the first thread if you push hard enough at the same time that you turn. Let me know if that helps. Vito Casola - FIX IT Yourself.!!

where can I buy that rubber seal? what size is it and are they universal for all cartridges?

You can buy those at any Canadian Tire, Home Depot, Rona, Lowes or Home Hardware. They are pretty standard. Not sure what your size might be so the best thing would be to take yours apart on a day when you have time to quickly run to a store, because your water will be off until you can get back and complete the repair. What if the faucet handle wont' come out? Mine is leaking like a sieve and i can't get the faucet out. its stuck after the nut is completely off...

Hi, The handles is threaded into the faucet body so you have to turn the handles same as you would when you turn on the water and then just keep turning until it comes it is totally unscrewed and then it should come out. Let me know if that works. Vito Casola - FIX IT Yourself.!!
