OK, I'm by no means a career professional photographer. I'm just getting old and reflecting on my experiences over many decades trying to be self-employed in various activities (screen printing/multimedia editor/graphics/publishing/importing/etc.) One thing I can look back on is that I cannot recall any situation where I started out offering something for nothing to a business and that business came back for additional work with the intention to pay me. Even if it's peanuts or a trade of equal value, make some kind of arrangement and create some kind of memo/invoice, whatever, to establish it's a transaction. Set the correct tone from the start. On the other hand I have been involved as a volunteer with many not for profit and charitable organizations and actually those have brought me paid work. I do some of my activities as a volunteer and different functions as a business, submitting an invoice. Those have worked out pretty well over many years and brought in more paying referrals than my business relationships.

Hi Charlie! I’m totally agree with that. That’s why I said to always charge something even when being a beginner. Because if you give away work for free to someone, that person will NEVER pay you. It’s very important to know that for people to respect our work, we have to respect it ourselves. It’s great to know your experience! Thank you for sharing it. This can help more photographers around here. I’ve never volunteered for charities but I did hear that it’s great and many times they have budget to pay. Thanks again for sharing your experience! 😊📸

@@LauraBC Thanks Laura. The other thing with charities is you'll be getting known by the big donors and that sometimes turns into connections too. When I volunteer I'm there to help a good cause, not make money. So for example I make/manage website content, shoot event photos, plan events etc as the volunteer but design brochures and produce a video at discounted prices because they'd have a budget for those anyway.

Hey Laura, some excellent tips and tricks to help someone progress and earn that little bit extra. I didn’t even think about having my own website as I thought my skills didn’t warrant it, but you made perfect sense as to why you shouldn’t link your Instagram. Also I love using Airbnb, I went to Wales and stayed in a lovely Airbnb and it was so beautiful and for such a great price. I Love your videos, so much more relatable content and always helpful tips. Thank you so much! 😊 I’m glad you liked it. It’s hard to answer as that is very subjective. It depends on your photography niche, the ideal client you want to attract and many other factors. You have to write articles that give value to potential clients so they can discover your business while searching in google. 😊
