Huh, this is like the first photography KZbinr ever that didn't start with "Gear doesn't matter". I love it.
@OhhhhhhhBugger8 ай бұрын
Right? Gear DOES matter. If it didn't make any difference, people wouldn't spend thousands on it. My photos markedly improved when I got Canon 'L' glass years ago. Buyers can tell a difference!

Finally thanks to Laura, someone admits that the smartphone camera quality is unmatched to a real camera. Been always trying to say this to people, but they failure to understand this.
@LauraBC8 ай бұрын
I’m glad you agree! I get a bit crazy when people compare a professional camera with a smartphone… it’s not comparable in any way. 😅 Of course they offer incredible quality and some work it can be done. But checking RAW files of my iPhone 15 and comparing them with my cameras… Huge difference. Mostly when trying to edit those RAW files. The colours and quality deteriorate pretty quick. 😅

@@LauraBC I know a lady across the street who uses an iPhone, but she can't do any larger prints with it because it reveals the utter garbage pixel binned "high res" "compression". Or whatever that nonsense is. On paper the specs sound good, but I have a similar camera, and I only use it for wide scenes that I need to take on the go. People think "zoomed" on these things means you are actually zoomed in optically. It's all digital folks, and you are eating IQ for breakfast.!

Thank you so so much! 😍 I’m so excited about this. I’ve been working on it for over a year as it was very hard to keep up with everything I’m working on. Then the surgeries I had to go through, then the move to Bali etc. 😅 But I can finally put my hands into it again to finish editing everything! I can’t wait! Loads of love and thank you always for your support, it means the world to me! ❤

00:52 📱 Start with the gear: Phones can begin your journey; cameras offer more flexibility and quality. 03:03 🎯 Choose your photography niche wisely; experiment early but focus eventually for client clarity. 04:50 🖼 Your portfolio matters: Build a professional website, not just relying on social media like Instagram. 07:02 📸 Building your portfolio without clients: Use friends, family, and events relevant to your chosen niche. 09:28 📊 Start a client database: Use Instagram to find and collect potential clients' emails. 10:24 💌 Pitching to clients: Craft professional, non-spammy emails with clear value propositions.

Laura, great video as always, thank you! After seeing one of your videos, I launched my first home portrait studio. You broke the myth that clients will feel uncomfortable there 😅 I managed to create a portrait portfolio because of that! Now, you're giving great advice about searching for clients - creating a client database first is such a great way to do it. Much more room to organize workflow! Thank you!

Thanks so much, Laura! I have just recently purchased a used Canon 5D iv and a Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 G2, and I finally feel that my images are good enough to sell. The 7D ii is a great camera, but this one has a certain feel to the image. I now need to get shots with it to mix with the ones from the 7d ii for my portfolio. Thanks again for the direction. I hope to be shooting clients by fall. You are the best! Big Love from Georgia!

What I don’t understand is how to build a website if you do not have a portfolio of photos to put on the website and equally, how to build a portfolio of photos when you don’t have a website

I explained this in the video. 😄 Both of your questions. From the minute 7 I explain how to get photos to get a portfolio. And I also explain how easy it is to join a website platform, choose a template and upload your photos. 😊 Would you be interested in a video where I explain how to build a website? If there are enough people interested, I may do it, no problem at all. 🥰

I shoot Nikon, I have had people tell me that jobs have literally fired them for shooting Nikon, and they've had jobs turn them down once they hear they shoot Nikon..... I think that is ridiculous, and one of the reasons that has prevented me from taking it more seriously. I'm heavily invested in the Nikon gear now, can't really afford to change.
@LauraBC8 ай бұрын
This is actually insane! Thank you so much for sharing. There is a lot of “hate” towards Nikon. Just because they were left a little behind in compared to other brands. But Nikon it’s also incredible!! And now they are releasing good cameras! It’s crazy to know that people were fired because of that? 🤦🏻♀️ There are incredible photographers out there shooting with Nikon. I love Daniel Kordan for instance and he is wildly successful. Please don’t feel intimidated by those stories. Being freelance nobody will be able to “fire” you for shooting with Nikon as you’ll get your own clients. And I trust that you can find studios or companies that will be ok with it. Just keep shooting and believing in your skills and gear. ❤️

I'm a Canon guy, but super jelly of Nikon lenses, esp. long telephoto zooms and primes....
@NamasteLuna8 ай бұрын
I'm sorry but that is beyond stupid. I'd advise you to keep trying and keep pitching. If a potential client has anything to say about your choice in brand gear you can politely respond with the fact that Nikon IS a profesional gear brand with excellent quality, but also they are hiring you for your knowledge, talent and creative view which has nothing to do with the brand you've chosen. I shoot Nikon too btw❤ 😉

Not to be rude, but this is the same generic advice I’ve been reading or hearing for a decade from many photographers. And the truth is, nope, it most likely won’t work to get anyone a sustainable career as a working photographer. It might, but most likely won’t. That’s why most of the photographers telling you this have KZbin channels or IG accounts with big followings that they monetise in different ways (ads, selling courses, Patreon, presets and so on). I don’t care how it was 10-15 years ago. Nowadays, the truth is very few up and coming photographers will manage to make a living unless they manage to get a large following in social media. I wish people were more candid about this.
