I'm a defender of "heaven meets earth like a sloppy wet kiss" LOL I haven't thought about that in so long! That clip where the man was uncomfortable encouraging his daughters to have sex, but was ok with his sons, was so real to my time as a daughter in the church. I would never have seen a Christian man even be self-aware enough to acknowledge and reflect on that. Reading Sheila Gregoire has me shocked to learn there are Christian parents who think it's important for their married daughters to have a good sex life. I was never taught it's ok to want sex, let alone good sex, in any context. Theoretically, sex was a gift from God, but even with all my modern day healing, "wanting a good sex life" still sounds really indulgent lol. The idea that "we'll just terrorize the kids / daughters while they're teens then sort it out when they're old enough to get married" makes me so mad. It's always interesting to hear different experiences on this. I don't know if I was taught to channel my romantic and sexual desires into passion for god, for example... I felt like I was taught to just not have those desires. Or it was presumed that I didn't, because I was a girl. Then I would feel annoyed at adults' presumption that I was untrustworthy and driven mad with lust because I was a teenager, when I was just floating in a void, dead to my sexuality and lost in shame. (Maybe I liked "sloppy wet kiss" because it was nice to see anything so physical / sensual in a positive light from the church when I was so young and lost. Our church changed the lyrics, and I defiantly sang the sloppy wet version lol.) Uh, back to the topic of swan princess, I'm more upset than I thought I would be to see the Queen reunited with her husband. What about my decades-long, will-they-won't-they, old man flirtationship??? 😂 I'm way more invested in her getting with the character I've known this WHOLE time, over some new guy who showed up out of nowhere and stole the ending to their romance. Damn!

How are these 3D models so unsettling to look at, what is going on with the proportions here that they all look so uncomfortably uncanny? Maybe it's because these are all designs that would work fine in traditional hand drawn animation, or in a kids storybook.

I feel like I should be relieved the series is over and I don't have to see one of my childhood favourites get twisted any further but... is that really how it ends? Thank goodness we have you to guide us through this mess Laura, the only saving grace of this series going on for so long is that we got your wonderful videos out of it. The lack of Alise in these films is really bugging me now. Her lack of presence in the second film feels obvious with the pirate subplot and not meeting her newly returned grandfather at the end, but I actually feel there could have been more done with her in the first film. The reveal that Uberta was not born into the royal life and had it suddenly thrust upon her, like Alise, could have been a good bonding moment for the two of them. Especially with Alise rebelling so much against Uberta's teaching, it could have been sweet to have them sit down and talk it out, maybe get Uberta to say she pushed so hard because she didn't want Alise to be as unprepared as she was, and that pushing herself and everyone around her is how she coped with the burden of being royalty. It sucks that it's so easy to see the potential in these movies but the final result is always underwhelming.

There comes a time in every person's life when people just associate you with an animal for some reason, and buy you something related to that animal when they're out of other gift ideas, because they've noticed all the tchotchkes you've accumulated over time as a result of people doing the same thing. Imagine, though, if your assigned fursona also happens to be closely associated with an early childhood trauma. Yowch. On the fundie/purity culture section, one thing I'd note is that the "sloppy wet kiss" song (its How He Loves by John Mark McMillan, btw, and it's honestly one of the better contemporary christian worship songs) was originally written by a man, and it remained pretty obscure until a larger band covered it- and changed that lyric from "sloppy wet kiss" to "unforeseen kiss." In it's heyday, there was a significant debate in many churches about which version of the song to use, because "sloppy wet kiss" made so many people extremely uncomfortable, and most worship bands and covers used the "unforeseen kiss" version. (this is despite the fact that "unforeseen kiss" is functionally meaningless in the given context, and changing the lyrics really undercuts the whole verse- it goes from being a really confronting and evocative view of god's love to like, abstract meaningless fluff) While girls channelling their romantic/sexual feelings into being about Jesus is a real phenomenon (I think that a lot of Flyleaf's music would be a much better example of this?), I would use How He Loves and the debate around its lyrics as an example of how fundie protestants fantasize about intimacy and affection in their relationship with god but are deeply uncomfortable with any real manifestation of that. This has truly nothing to do with anything in this video I just remembered that this debate exists and that I have OPINIONS DAMMIT

Something I want to point out as an out lesbian, former Evangelical who got the full purity retreat/purity culture/And The Bride Wore White/abstinence education treatment, and current Catholic convert is that being encouraged to channel your romantic longing toward Jesus isn’t actually the full norm. I’m a bridal mystic, which is a branch of Catholic thought and practice that that isn’t really well understood (consecrated virginity is something that even other Catholics don’t really recognize as a valid vocation) but that has a long history in both men and women (St. George Megalomartyr is described in early Greek sources as a pure and chaste bridegroom kept for Christ Himself, for one thing) and encourages and fosters a kind of intimacy with Christ that (in my experience) Evangelicals tend to find off-putting. “Direct your feelings toward Jesus” is a centuries-old tradition that has been a haven for queer and possibly-queer Christians of all stripes (St. Kateri Tekakwitha and her companion Wari Teres, St. Bridget of Sweden, Rupert of Deutz, etc) and I’d like to gently push back against the idea that it’s weird and unusual simply because it’s less common - it’s a misunderstood and fairly marginalized kind of mysticism and I think it bears a more serious examination. But as to the evangelical part - in my years of experience I found that it was significantly more common to be told to pin all your hopes for life and companionship on the hypothetical Prince Charming type that God is personally picking out for you like the world’s most dedicated matchmaker. The thing I was repeatedly taught was that there was a man out there for me who God chose and called to be my husband and I just had to wait passively for him to find me and romance me. I was told multiple times that I would find the love of God in the acts and closeness and intimacy of my marriage, that my husband would metaphorically embody God, and that he would be imperfect but also divinely designed to be my other half. It was overwhelming and distracting and gave me a lot of trouble in understanding my own lesbianism - I could hypothetically imagine some kind of man that I could marry contentedly, and if God knew exactly what kind of man I needed, surely I’d be getting that in my marriage, right? Wrong lmao I’m gay. Anyway this isn’t an Attack or anything; I love the work you do and plan to join your Patreon as soon as I can get the budget for it, and if we lived in the same city I’d buy you a drink for the Repo! video alone. Thank you for being a voice for progressive Christianity; it means more than you know.

Great video as always! I appreciated watching the conclusion of an era, lol. I just wanted to toss my two cents in on the LDS culture stuff, as I've been a practicing member my whole life. Your criticisms of the LDS church's culture (especially the purity culture) is not only well-articulated, but apt! It's a problem throughout the entire church, but it's DEFINITELY a capital letter Issue in the more insular communities found throughout Utah. However, I would say these films reflect that insular, uber conservative niche rather than the greater populace (it's a quirk of Utah having a strong film/tv scene--people with the weird, edge case beliefs have a much easier time getting into the industry than the rest of the membership who are normal about things). Thankfully, the church leadership has made a major push to handle previously taboo subjects with grace and tolerance rather than judgment and saving sinners, so I'm hopeful that things will continue to improve. The culture may be slow to follow, but I've definitely noticed a change. Anyways, I just wanted to pop in and give my take on the situation. Thanks for another fun, insightful video!

From strict, ask-her-father, courtshippy malarky to leadership realizing it was giving newlyweds complexes and shit. So the stereotypical youth pastor harping on the hotness of his wife is a clunky, watered-down-flavoraid of saying "your horny feelings are valid, but only in this context". Not that there aren't more direct or manipulative actors in this sentiment, but that's the reasoning many of those not fully enveloped use to kick those complexes down the road. I know Mormon culture is usually an offshoot of larger evangelical culture, but being brutally realistic about childbirth (as well as how *into each other* all the couples are in this series) does track.

Had to go rewatch the sequel video before watching this one hehe. It's so funny to me how dead all the Swan Princess reboot scenes felt, in comparison to the staging and storyboarding of Veggie Tales. Just the "Banished to the island of eternal tickling!" scene had more interesting camera usage and body language than any of the SP movies had :'')
