Laura and Grant, thanks so much for the extra effort lately! You may feel like you're just farmers making a living and making videos, but many of us enjoy the peaceful (out of the city) life through you vicariously. Your channel is clean (thank you for that!), entertaining, educational (I'm just a desk jockey working in the city), and fulfilling. I really look forward to whatever you post, be it harvesting, planting, fixing pivots, raising kittens or planting lawns. Thank you for pulling us all into your daily life!

When i was barely a teenager and a 4H member i planted many pine trees encircling the yard of our family home. As they grew we harvested a few for Christmas trees to thin them out. The last time I saw those trees was about 30 years ago and they were giants standing proud. Now as I'm 73 I can only imagine how tall they are.

In the future, you should have mowed first to have the grass short, then use the aerator/seeder machine after mowing. You probably blew the seed away from the areas you wanted to seed with the mower..

When you plant any transplant, mud it in. Gives the roots a chance to survive. Needs constant watering for a season to get the feeder roots established.

Planted 100 pine trees about 2-3 ft tall about 4-5 years ago. Planty of water. Set up a trailer behind my ATV with a 100 gallon poly water tank and pump with a spray wand. In the first year i watered every two to three days at about 1-2 gallons each tree. In the 2nd year once a week. The trees are 8-10 ft tall now and full thick trees. Got to keep that root ball watered in the beginning to help it establish new roots. Your place looks wonderful. Love your videos......great work you two.

Love your videos as always ! Plant the new trees with the root ball exposed at the top so the trunk flare is exposed. Before planting, it might be beneficial to add some root stimulants into the soil/hole. You can also check PH levels and adjust if necessary for the species. Use mostly native soil to fill in the hole when planting so as not make it too cozy for the tree. You want to encourage roots to branch out and not circle in a cozy hole. Deep watering of the root ball is Vital during the first year especially during dry conditions. Evergreens are more water needy. A sprinkler system will not do the job unless you have an irrigation zone set up for slow watering of the root ball. Check soil moisture periodically with a probe or dig down to gauge it. I use an arborist every couple of years for my trees to make sure there aren’t any problems lurking. Tree care runs in slow motion so good to stay ahead. Wishing you success and love your channel.

for new trees dig a huge hole 2x the size of the root ball of the new tree. If you can soak the root ball in a large bucket for 8 hours or more before planting. this will allow the roots to UN-bind. mix dirt with compost 50/50. Use this mixture to lay a base on bottom of hole the center tree then pack remainder of mixture around the tree. water daily for at least 2 weeks
@earlbrown
@earlbrown 10 ай бұрын
The best tip I've found when transplanting trees is to bore a deep hole first. (way deeper than the 'rule' about twice as wide and the same depth as the bucket). Then, slide a PVC tube down to the bottom that sticks up above flush and backfill it with compost/soil mixture. That way during its first year of growth, the kingroot can shoot straight down easily, and you can deep water with fertilizer if you want. Plus, even during a light rain, the tree can get deep watered as well. After a season or two, you can slide the tube out as the trees will be established. There's quite a few videos on youtube showing that trick when people are transplanting fruit trees.

Hey, I'm a lawn nerd! First of all, congrats on your enthusiasm for the lawn! It's very important in my opinion, and the best ground cover ever Designed. I think you might be a little late for seeding! I hope not, I hope you get some good weather and those seeds germinate and have a change to establish before cold weather. Also, with that great mower and side discharge, I'm worried that it picked up your seed and threw it to other spots. Anyway, good job and remember that the best thing you can do it a lawn is mow it, frequently. The next best thing is go out there in bare feet!

My grandfather taught me to fill the hole that I dug to plant a tree in. I mean to fill the entire hole with water prior to planting. Let the water soak in before you put the tree into the hole. If the soil is very dry you might need to fill the hole with water twice. Then follow your usual plaanting process. I have been following this process and I have not lost a tree. Of course after the initial planting the tree will need 5 gallons of water per day for 2 weeks. Then 5 gallons once a week for 2 months. That is a lot of water. But trees will chase water. Thats why that initial watering is vital to the trees growth

Look for some tree spikes - they're a fertilizer (specific for evergreens, shrubs or other) that you hammer into the ground under the tree. It releases fertilizer as it dissolves. I've had great results bringing sickly trees back to a vibrant tree.

We just found 3 kittens in our abandoned chicken coop last Sunday. No sign of Mamma but they’re happy and healthy. They’ve been to the Vet for their first health check and vaccinations. We’ll be keeping one female for the house and the male will eventually be a barn cat when he’s big enough and ready for yard duty. So much fun to watch them!

Just over a decade ago I worked as a crew foreman and assistant manager for close family friends landscaping company for just over two seasons! My self taught tricks and guidelines that learned for planting any size plants right up to 25ft trees was, always prepare to plant by first predig all your holes but I always dig out twice the recommended dirt ! Then I would calculate how much the total extra dirt was ( if the recommended size hole was 3 wheel barrels worth of dirt , I’d remove 6 wheel barrels) then I would make my own (plant mix) to put back in the holes to replace the ( extra 3 portions) ! I would add 1/3 peet- moss and 2/3 special planting topsoil ( 15%chicken manure 25%compost 60% screened topsoil) the peet moss helps by retaining a lot of extra water and all plants loved being planted in our special topsoil mix, apparently the ammonia in the chicken shit works as fertilizer stimulating the roots as they feed off the water and compost! And the screened soil is important because it allows the roots to rapidly grow and spread easier cuz how soft and fluffy it is compared to regular soil! I hope I’ve explained this good enough for you guys to understand, sorry about making you read this short novel , lol !! If you follow my guidelines, and you remember to water the tree’s about once a week , I guarantee success!! That topsoil mix is like steroids for the newly planted things ( anything that you plant to grow ,grass ,gardens produce/flowers, and all shrubs/bushes or trees )thrive as long as feed/water properly and protect them (parasites, rodents,wildlife and extreme weather heat/cold/drought) if you have any questions, just comment on this comment or message me and I’ll happily respond

Suggestion about your larger fir trees. (1) Contact your State Forest Service and have them come out and review your trees and they can make a suggestion on how much spacing between the trees would be beneficial and management of your trees. (2) Normally trees that size should be no closer than 6 feet. If closer they can battle each other for nutrients and water, which can possibly kill one of both trees. (3) Fir trees should never touch each other. (4) For your trees that died in the yard, test the soil and see what ph level is. If those spots were where you removed junked from the yard, it could have changed the soil ph and nutrient level. (i.e. rocks, metal, etc.)
