I made it yesterday, and it was amazing!! Everyone loved it, and said it was better than milk cakes from bake shops. I did not have cake flour so I substituted 2 tbsp of flour with corn flour. I also added a 1/8 tsp of baking soda to the dry mixture. I drenched the cake with the milk mixture and chilled it in the fridge, and just before serving it I drizzled a tiny bit of extra milk and topped it with cream and berries. SO GOOD! There was not a single piece left.

My 13 year old daughter made this for the family earlier tonight and it was incredible! She only made one change...she baked it in a glass 9X13 baking dish (no parchment, just greased with a bit of veggie oil), this way there was no transferring it to another platter and risk breakage, the milk mixture soaks in completely and it can be served and stored in the dish. Amazing flavor! Thanks, Laura!

I tried this recipe and followed the instructions exactly - however, my cake turned out really dense and flat - not spongey and able to absorb moisture at all - I had to throw it out :( I wish Laura explained key tips that are critical to making a fluffy, light, absorbent cake such as room temperature eggs and working quickly so things aren't left outside for a long time. I later researched why a cake doesn't become sponge-like, and wish those tips were emphasized in this video
@florentyena4 жыл бұрын
I faced same issues today. Could you share the insights you learnt?

@@florentyena I'm so sorry I made it 3 years ago and completely forgot what I learned as I haven't made sponge cake again since
@vukkulvar97694 жыл бұрын
The egg whites do the heavy lifting, you can help them with some baking powder mixed with the flour (as Laura does). A few drop of vinegar or lemond juice, or cream of tartar, will help your egg whites. You can cut half of the butter and put some milk to lighten the batter before introducing the whipped egg whites, you'll lost less air. If you do that, reintroduce some fat later by substituting some of the (evaporated) milk with heavy cream.
@Gizuru11 жыл бұрын
Hi Laura. First i want to say i do love to try new recipes since I know everyone has a different taste on food. I will give you my honest answer after trying this. I believe the cake was too heavy to a point that the milk won't get absorbed. But, i think it could be the eggs(not sure) i would like to try same recipe with a more spongy cake that won' t fall into my stomach like a rock. Thank you for sharing, i'm sure there are a lot of people that will love your tres leches recipe.
@MarissaAmbriz10 жыл бұрын
Hi friends, I made this cake following the exact recipe but my cake came out very dense. Any ideas on why?
@ashkhri5 жыл бұрын
Im four years late lmao but there could be many reasons for this the egg whites didnt fluff up well aka either you didnt whisk them long enough OR some egg yolk fell in (even a drop of it can ruin egg whites) OR the bowl you whisked it in was slightly dirty. That, or you didnt fold the egg whites in well Or you left the batter standing for too long Or the oven temperature was off Or you messed up the measurement of flour Or you packed in the flour into the measuring cups (if you used any) or you forgot baking powder/soda There are many more ways to mess up, but these are all i can remember off the top of my head

The cake is popular in Mexico, Central and South America, North America and many parts of the Caribbean, as well as in Europe. The origins of the tres leches are disputed; however, the idea for creating a cake soaked in a liquid is likely of Medieval European origin, as similar cakes, such as British Trifle and rum cake, and tiramisu from Italy, use this method.

If the origin of the cake is unknown then technically...it's everyone's cake! So she isn't wrong for calling it a Mexican cake. She also wouldn't be wrong for calling it a Domincan cake. I mean, it's a cake people. I understand we all like to feel special by dividing ourselves up into different races that we as people created but at the end of the day, we're HUMANS. Nothing more, nothing less. It's a delicious cake invented by some genius person that definitely doesn't exist anymore. The end

When I make this cake I simmer a little bit the tres leches mixture. I pour it all over the cake that is just out of the oven and in the baking dish so there's no need of poking it with a fork and no leaking. Let it in the fridge over night. I also use almond extract for the cake and vanilla for the milk mixture. I use a recipe similar to this one and is beyond delicious.
