How to build Center Console from scratch

Last week I started building a center console for my van. This week I built the cupholders and some additional cool features.

It's inspiring when a maker has such a strong visual style that it comes across no matter the project. Everything Laura makes, even the most functional stuff looks distinctly Laura Kampf, and it makes me want to focus more on putting a personal touch on the thing I make myself.

I watch so many creator channels on KZbin: Diresta, April Wilkerson, Ben Uyeda, Modern Builds, Make Something, Izzy Swan, and a hundred others (and I love them all), but Laura's artistry and aesthetic sense-and OMG, the production/editing skills!-are just miles ahead of everyone else. You could expand on the phone holder's utility by routing a recess into the back of the top deck, and install a wireless charging pad. Wire it into the 12v and the whole time your phone is in the cradle, it's getting topped up.

Volt meter, phone holder, cup holders, and a storage bin, and not to forget that awesome map light! This is so many useful features packed into one, it really heightens the quality of life I'm sure.

I don’t press subscribe very often…but the joy radiating from this project makes it way too easy! I’m an inventor…when I’m not inventing, I’m watching bad news on the phone. This is a healthy substitute! Btw…I actually need to build a console too. Your joy gets me over the motivation line.

This is great. You could also add a wireless charger on the backside of the wood where your phone is sitting, so you can charge the phone without a cable while driving.

I am mesmerized by the passion that you put into your projects. Most people would go to their local auto parts and accessories store and purchase a cup holder. Yours is next level genius. Very Nice! You may want to ad some scrap neoprene (or something else that can be washed off easily} to the bottoms of the cup holders to catch drips and minimize rattles.

My first thought was to copper-plate the stainless steel, but now that I've seen the black, it's a much better match for the rest of the console. Super cool look to the project and highly functional. Thanks for sharing!

Clocking all your screws the same way definitely satisfied my OCD :) I wonder if where your phone sits, if you made that bar a little thicker (front to rear), could you embed a USB-C connector to charge your phone? You'd set your phone down, then slide it slightly backwards to mate it into the connector. Or maybe embed a Qi charger, if your phone supports wireless charging.
