May I suggest that if you don’t have already and it sounds good to you, that you create a custom wood burning stamp to “sign” your creations, especially for the furniture. Maybe even several with different specifics like location and “personal collection” for additional identification. May have minimal importance or value today but I expect these items to become generational and significance may be quite different with passed time.

Love the design. One little thing. When there is no air circulation underneath the mattress, you have a change of mold under your matress caused by the humidity of the matress
@VeretenoVidsКүн бұрын
But it's on slats and on a tile floor so surely there will be air circulation. Plus they live in a dry environment.

@@VeretenoVids I had a box spring on the floor with a mattress on top, so a lot of air flow in theory, but we got mold on the floor beneath and on the underside of the mattress. So slats don't help if the outer frame is closed.

well out here in So Cal the damp is in the winter/spring when it is cool so not all year but it would be easy to remedy that with some small feet on the frame to echo the little benches from last week no more then 2" tall (smaller better) on the corners and in the middle Maybe add a small board inside to support the long matters supports. prototypes are always problem solving exercises Forward!!

Challenge: make a piece of NICE and not basic furniture with minimal tools, stuff that an average household has. Which are a handheld drill, electric hand saw and sanding machine and then just non-electric low cost tools. For relatability and so that I can make it too :D
@AndrewArcher-k6y17 сағат бұрын
May I suggest when using the dry joint method of using dowels that you take a tip from timber frameing techniques and use an offset punch to mark the drill position for the hole through the Domino, this will give you an offset hole so that when you hammer the dowel through it will snug the joint up giving you a firmer fixing.

Hey! Dein zweiter Ansatz gefällt mir sehr gut.

How great would it be if you could make all of your furniture with recycled, quality hard woods, as you did with the benches. You have the skills so it would be a waste to not get the maximum benefit out of them by creating the best quality pieces made with the best quality woods. It would probably take a few years or months to search out flea markets, second hand stores and the like to source enough materials, but you seem to have the time. Good luck.

Lots of people mentioning humidity - I wonder… when you turn the mattress (it’s recommended to do so every three months), if you just prop it up against the wall for most of the day if that would be enough to air it and avoid any potential problems ? I really want a futon which would look good on your frame… Looking forward to the next video 😊.

Do you mean to prop it up every day or every three months? Every day would work. But every three months will probably lead to mold.

I would have used some small legs hiden behind the frame that lifts it off the ground for better vantilation. Especially with the carpet, the airflow will be pretty restricted and the whole point of a slatted frame is ventilation to the matress.

im not sure if humidity is an issue in LA, but the point of slats are to let the mattress breath and by boxing this all the way to the ground you could see mold build up on the underside of your mattress, this is why they suggest not having a mattress directly on the floor. Could easily ad a primary level that lifts it slightly higher similar to hotel beds and allow air circulation on the outside edges, but it will have to be flush with the head and foot of the frame and thats not a good look. Im sure there is another aesthetic solution

I love the design and final result, it is beautiful. My only feedback is to not champher the edges where two boards come together at the corners. To me, it would make the corners look more blended or smooth. But that comes down to esthetic taste, so well done with what you made, it’s amazing.

Hey there Laura, now that you're building in the US with wood milled to inches, are you still building in metric? And if so, how are you reconciling wood milled to imperial dimensions to a metric build without going nuts? What's your strategy?
@CuriouserAndCuriouser4Күн бұрын
I grow up using metric system and live in Canada now where lumber is still in inches. I use whatever fits better, mostly cm and if inch measurement is closer to what I need I will just count the marks on the ruler, I can't be bothered with 7/16 of an inch kind of stuff :D But shopping for wood I convert cm to how many 8ft or 12ft long boards it is.
@marielletenberg9318Күн бұрын
When you have a ruler with metric on the one side and inches at the other, do you still have a problem? I live in Europe where everything is metric…never worked with inches before. So if I am wrong, please do explain the problems!
@marpheus1Күн бұрын
I don't know how it is in Europe, but at least here in Brazil, all lumber goods (and also pipes and stuff like that) are the same as the imperial ones, just labeled with metric dimensions. You won't find 20mm plywood. It'll be 19mm (¾"), also, a full sheet (4'x8') is sold as 1220mmX2440mm. So, at the end, it is all the same and the metric goods actually follow the imperial ones
@bloke1987Күн бұрын
marpheus1in the uk ply is sold as 1220*2440 but it's an oddly bilingual country for units! For instance most houses have a 3/4“bsp on a 15mm pipe for tap connectors 😂 You can still build in metric, you just get used to seemingly strange dimensions like 38mm thick planks.
@marpheus1Күн бұрын
@bloke1987 it is just the same here, nothing is a round number of units because everything (or almost everything) is secretly imperial

@victoriabaker4400Күн бұрын
To all those convinced there is an airflow anf therefore moisture issue, I do not think so. The slats do not touch the floor, there is no mattress contact with floor. Also, they are in a desert environment with low humidity prevailing, and a ceramic tile floor. A wood floor *might* catch moisture under the solid edge of the box, but definitely not tile.
