As someone who cooks (with big, sharp knives) a lot, you wear the stitches as a badge of honor, but keep the scars as a lesson. Speedy recovery and can't wait to see more of the shell!

I worked for a fancy Japanese knife company and had to demo our knives regularly. I was told by chef you’re either a burner or a cutter. Apparently I’m a burner. I’m proud to say I only got myself like twice, and in very safe places. But I legit burn myself all the time. I had a wood stove for a while and my arms are covered in scars now lol.

@@ethanpschwartz I have a perfect 90 degree angle scar on my arm from the door of my wood stove. lol but with knives I had the vp of product design putting the fear of god in me about the damage I could do to my hands if I am not careful. Every year we had a warehouse sale, and the knives weren’t packaged. You’d be walking and just see blood on the floor and the person may or may not even know they were cut. It was the people on blood thinners that were the worst though. They just wouldn’t stop bleeding. lol

Heal well-glad it wasn’t worse. (our wives do hate to get that kind of phone call.) Love the sail for covering. l built a ‘skin’ kayak using Dacron fabric over pine stringers. It’s light, strong, and works great. The dacron is traditionally used as small aircraft fuselage skin. It can be shrunk to tension it with a clothes iron, and that makes a drum-tight, clean-lined vessel. I wonder if your sail fabric is dacron and can be shrunk? You could test a scrap. But never try to shrink it with a heat gun-you cannot control distance & heat well enough and can burn through. A clothes iron set to around 200 degrees Farenheit, use a non-contact thermometer to check and run it smoothly over the fabric, is what I used. On your camper you’d want some screen molding or similar over the stapled edges to better resist the tension. Tensioned fabric is more quiet in the wind, less flapping on the highway. For boatbuilding I used an adhesive under the staples, but only on the distant edges-you don’t want the shrinking fabric to be caught up against any intermediate supports, it must be allowed to move/slide during shrinking. Just an idea; if nothing more, it could be something to try on a future project…

@@GeneJordan I love how you think that’s an argument. So American of you. We live longer. We die a lot less often, especially not to things like pregnancy. We also don’t get shot. Especially not as children. We’re less likely to end up homeless and more likely to get out of homelessness. I’d rather pay taxes. Even 80% as long as that means barely anyone will have to die. Especially not to easily avoidable causes. And especially not children ☺️ But I get it. Some people love their money and themselves more than anything else. We have those too.

But really just taking us all on a journey with you, even if that journey involves little "progress" on a project and instead an angle grinder injury, is really enjoyable to be a part of. Sending you all the healing juju to support a rapid and complete recovery for your wrist so you can keep making cool stuff for us to watch. And as someone who's been sewing for a long long (really long) time... Do your best to ensure the cut ends of the sail fabric are sealed so the wind generated by moving with the truck won't let them fray. Depending on saill composition, you might find a heat sealant (like a hot knife) might work, or a super-glue to be applied to all edges (even the ones inside the cover.) With fabrics, I use Fray Check, but given the presume tension on the shell you may need something industrial-strength.

Everyone, and I mean everyone who regularly works with angle grinders has has at least one accident with it. Most, fairly minor, but still a huge rite of passage. I love my angle grinder...but the old de walt was tethered to civilization (and help in the form form of other people) by the power cord. My newer battery model...hmm...I can go all over the place and do the grind thing, and help can be far away. A salutary tale of an older farmer, cordless grinder and a severed artery around about the time of purchase made me a very careful user. Good on Laura for sharing this...we all need a reminder.

Thank you for giving me a soap box to stand on while I share my opinion with everyone else besides my friends. The angle grinder is by far the most dangerous tool found in most shops. I try and use mine as little as possible because its the one tool I am always worried I am going to hurt myself with. So far I am lucky enough to have a blade rip apart and shoot across the room or have a sanding blade turn into shrapnel but you just never know. Hope you are ok Laura and a quick recovery. @samuelmellars7855
@samuelmellars7855 3 күн бұрын
Things that spin are dangerouuuussss! It looks like it isn't moving, but rotational inertia is a powerful force. Table or running saws, routers (beefier than drills and you move them around as you move them) drill presses (beefier than hand drills, your hand isn't on the trigger at all times) buffing wheels, wire wheels, stationary grinders, and angle grinders, that get waved around like they are toys... all horribly dangerous and people get too used to working with them and get sloppy. I was able to accidentally demonstrate why gloves shouldn't be used around spinning things when driving a screw once. I was holding the screw in a gloved hand. Glove snagged the screw, and got wrapped around and pulled off my finger. A low danger demonstration of how a glove can help drag you into a machine in no time at all!

Definitely an angle grinder for me, too. A table saw there is a well defined "unsafe zone" that doesn't move, and of course if you have a SawStop you have an extra level of protection there. With an angle grinder, there is no such limit -- most people that I've heard of have angle grinder accidents when they either lose control of the tool or the cutter they are using shatters, and that can happen no matter how careful you are. It's way more unpredictable, and takes forever to stop once you let go of the trigger. I'm very glad Laura escaped with only (a lot of) stitches.

If you find that the sail buzzing in the wind causes stress and tearing around the staples and you end up looking for a way to do things differently you might research videos on covering aircraft wings with fabric. That seems to involve reinforcing seam tape and tight lacing to all the framework. Hopefully your first method gives you all the joy and service you were expecting. Wishing you a speedy and complete recovery!

I used an outdoor canvas on my truck’s backpack. It shredded where a strap flapped against it the first time I used it. Hope yours doesn’t touch anything hard… like wood ribs. Hope your hand heals quickly and don’t rush it. Spend the time doing things you would normally think you didn’t have the time to do…

hope for a speedy recovery! I got myself good with an angle grinder once... barely touched it and it took me down to the tendon! I'm glad you walked away relatively unscathed!

I'm glad you're ok. Racing dirtbikes and boilermaking for 40 years I've seen a few severe machinery-related injuries. My own personal 2nd worst injury was down to a 125mm ceramic flap disc that caught my thumb and the heel of my palm when I slipped. There was mucho, mucho sangre.

That cover is gonna look so good! Never thought old sails could be reused like that. Power tool injuries are always scary... Glad the injury wasn't worse. We're all hoping for a quick and hassle free recovery!
