Our top tips/what we use for doing this hack yourself:
Base
22mm plywood base
12mm mdf strips for packers/feet
Super glue + wood glue
Carcasses / main structure
50cm x 2 (www.ikea.com/g...)
100cm x 1 (www.ikea.com/g...)
44mm wide square planed timbre (www.wickes.co....) - used to separate the PAX units and make a frame at the same time. If we were to do this project again we would use something more like C16 construction timbre so provide the spacing (www.wickes.co....) and plane the edge to give a nice flat look. C16 can be found in many sizes so you could bring it out however far required by the hinge and door designs you go for.

You could layer the rug. Put a longer plain runner under the pretty rug you like so much.. it will actually sorta frame it. Problem solved.. keeping pretty rug.

Stunning. Totally. In North America, we call those hinges: European Hinges. The cornice is not too large; rather it is proportional to the piece. Laura, your design style and Ollie, your high visual spatial ability enable superb execution.

Paint hack I saw recently and wanted to share: put aluminum foil in the trey you put the paint in! When your finished painting just throw away the aluminum and you only need one paint trey ever😃 genius I think :) happy Friday 🤗

The cornice looks perfect, given the height the proportions work. A puny cornice would look unbalanced.

We’ve lived in and renovated 2 Victorian homes and they both had beautiful original cupboards built on the landings where you’re building yours, very lucky. I absolutely love Benjamin Moore paint colours and as we’re repainting this year I’m so excited about choosing colours for our home from them. The cupboards are stunning! I don’t think the cornice is too big it looks proportionate to the size of the cupboards.

I'm from Ontario, Canada and as you were showing all your paints I was like "Check, check and check!". We use all of those paints for our DIYs. The Aura line is the MOST beautiful paint and, truthfully, I use STIX for everything. We always have a can on hand for projects around the house. Good luck!

You will love Ben Moore Paint. It's the only one we ever use. If you are painting kitchen cabinets, you should use the Advance line, which has a longer drying time because it performs like an oil based paint, even though it cleans up with water. I am not usually a white-wall person, but I have fallen in love with Ben Moore's color "String of Pearls," which is a chalky white that never looks yellow, dingy or glaring. It looks beautiful with York Gray, which is one of the Williamsburg historic colors. Your projects are amazing! You both have worked so hard on your home and the results are a really remarkable achievement.

He wouldn't use any paint but Benjamin Moore because he said it went on so easily and didn't need as many coats as other paints. I'm in the US, BTW. The color you chose looks beautiful!

The top molding is in proportion and not too big at all! Leave it! You are mastering the building skills! I always use Benjamin Moore paints. Never disappointed!

This is amazing!!! There’s an online shop called Foxstow which makes different style doors for IKEA pax and metod cabinets. They come either bare, primed or painted. It’s a more bespoke looking option and not super expensive. Looking forward to more DIYs in the future :)

I think the cornice/crown moulding looks fabulous. It makes it look built in to a point. Like it was built when the house was built as opposed to it being a mobile piece of furniture which is what IKEA makes.

BM paint is amazing and the coverage is phenomenal. 1 gallon of BM covered the same as 2-3 gallons of Behr (a more economical brand at Home Depot, a diy store in the U.S.) I only made that mistake once!!
