Very interesting, I hadn't heard of Dial or Irish spring. I have sensitive skin and my mom wouldn't let me have Lux or Camay soap when I was little. The only soap that didn't aggravate my skin was Boots cold cream. The school bully once said to me "your mother buys cheap soap" to which I replied "that's coz we use a lot more of it than your household!" I caught hell for that comment🤨

Caligula Longhbottom Seems normal to me. My mom used to buy dove, which was pretty expensive where we lived, because she didn’t want to be judged for having cheap soap in the house. She used my eczema as an excuse but I never had issues with cheaper soaps because we just put bath oil and lotion on my skin anyway.

Laura what a great video this was. I am a soapaholic. Watching this was a trip down memory lane for me. I am in my fifties. Growing up my mother bought ivory soap then Irish spring for the family which I didn't care for. As a teenager in New York city I used Dove, Pears and Neutrogena. Now I use Claus Porto and Santa Maria Novella soaps-they can cost $25 USD each.

This was fun! I remember in the '50s and '60s that we gave each other Caswell Massey and Yardley for Christmas. We loved them! Sweetheart soap was for every day, and my dad used Zest as well as some heavy-duty hand soap with pumice in it, Lava. Grandmother would use her potato peeler to scape off some Ivory and boil it in a big pot on the stove to use to launder a delicate hand wash. None of us could stand the smell of Ivory, though - "Like a gas station lavatory" as my grandmother would say. She felt the same way about Camay. Jackie Kennedy made the news when her favorite, Phisohex, was taken off the market for the same reason as Dial. It became Phisoderm. Thanks so much for this fun trip down memory lane. I really enjoyed it!

My great grandma was married in the 1920’s when she was around 35 ish, back then that was considered old to get married, her husband, my great grandfather was 6 years younger than her. She had my grandpa at 36 or 37. She was an attractive woman too, but funny how perception of age changes. I went way off topic lol... as for the video, I love vintage soaps!

Audrey swore by the Erno Lazlo Sea Mud Deep Cleansing Bar. and the fact that the ingredients still remain the same in it, when i use it, i feel like my icon is right there. I wish i was alive to see her when she was still alive. I was born in 2003. so i am way way late to have seen her. but love her movies, and listening to her talk. ultimate fashion icon, and beauty. such elegance and poise in her. i dream to have the elegance she has. you should definitely give Erno Lazlo a try!

Always a treat to spend some time with you and your videos. I make my own soap but still use Dial and Ivory because they both remind me of my grandparents every time I shower. And Dial at least is still a 4 oz bar while the others are being shrunk [ a "pound" of coffee is now 11 oz. Wait till we're paying full price for the 'new convenient motel size" slivers folks]. Dove and Neutrogena both remind me of my Grandmother. I've used Pears for years now, it seems to rinse faster than Neutrogena, but I like them both. Great video, a lot of brands I have never seen before and some forgotten as I thought they were gone for good. Keep up the great work. Thank you for this lovely video! I've used most of the soaps you featured, and I still use Kirk's Coconut Castile for it's simplicity, purity, and that it works well in the hard water we have here. I also have Jergens (which was shown in your beginning camera sweep). In my 20's (40 years ago)'. Jergens was popular with my friends and I back then because they sold the big bars of it 4-5 for a dollar - a good soap at a great value.

I had my first baby in Oct. 1970. Dial soap sent a sample for all new mothers while they were still in the hospital claiming it was the the #1 soap hospitals used for newborns. I did use it myself because I had oily skin, but I believe it was too harsh for a baby.

I loved Cashmere Bouquet because it had a beautiful scent and especially in a hot tub. Very nice soap. We also used and still use Ivory because it isn't detergent like most, but pure soap. Dial was great for acne until they removed the hexachlorophene.

P&G did a reissue of that original Ivory soap packaging around the turn of the millennium, probably that soap is about 20 yrs old. Thanks for the memories Laura Jean Atelier!!!

Kinda Funny ' memory , with Irish Spring Soap. It must have just came out , I was about 4 years old , and I kept on seeing the TV commercial .. the cutting of the soap bar - which my Mom found several cut down soap bars in an emtpy drawer in my room ... I got a spanking ' for . Still into soaps though , I Love my RIP Mom , I forgave Her ( for being Catholic ' ) and still into making soaps . Also really enjoy watching soap makers make n to purchase from too ) I also have a warm spot for the olde ' Companies too 😀 Share the Wealth , there's enough for ALL , Humanity . I want to try ALL , the soap . Soap is such personal thing , with Family too . Getting out of bed and to work is much easier when You have a nice soap waiting for You in the shower .. 🧼 )

I have a funny memory about Irish Spring Soap too! Years ago we had an old farmhouse. In the winters, we'd pack everything away. We forgot to pack away the Irish Spring Soap near the bathtub. When we arrived in the spring, every shred of Irish Spring Soap was eaten by mice --- there wasn't even a sliver of the green soap left. The mice evidently LOVED it!

Great job! Ever hear of Coast soap. I luv the scent of this soap because it is so refreshing. While we generally use Dial'a Pure and Natural soap, sometimes I like to buy a bar of Coast to leave it out for its scent.

Jlyn: they've been promoting it again because of it's germ killing properties. I've seen ads for it a couple of times in the last few weeks. It used to be a deodorant soap like Dial, a big hit in the '60s IIRC.

I’m so disappointed with Kirk’s it dried my skin out. I read alot of reviews that said it happened. But I will try the rest of these. I also purchased Florida Water which I adore! All these products I learned from you! Thank you!

That's not surprising about Kirk's. It's an all-coconut soap, using unstripped coconut oil that therefore still has the irritating short-chain soaps. Even without them it would be degreasing as soaps go. In general the more C12 (lauric) soap a soap mixture contains, the more grease-cutting, sudsy, and irritating it is. C12 comes from coconut, palm kernel, and (more expensively but less irritatingly) babassu oil. Stripping out the shorter-than-12-carbon fatty acids makes it less irritating without impairing its grease-cutting and sudsing. Conversely, the more C18 (stearic) soap, the less grease-cutting and more demulcent a soap is. In between is in between. Traditionally the longer chain soaps come from tallow, and now largely from vegetable equivalents. Other than Kirk's, bar soaps skewing toward the coconut, high suds end are Silk/Silk Road from Abu Dhabi, Rainbow Research, and then slightly less so with Camay, Lux, and Lifebuoy and then Coast and Dial (regular, not hypoallergenic), which also have extra fatty acid. Ivory is middle-of-the-road, as is Palmolive. Toward the low end, i.e. milder and less sudsy, were the original Dial, Tone, and Pure & Natural.

I use Satya Sai Baba's Nag Champa bar soap, it doesn't irritate my skin, but it rinses clean, and I don't feel sticky afterwards. Have to get it off the internet tho, stores around here don't carry anything but the major brands like Dove, Dial, etc.
