This was fun! I remember in the '50s and '60s that we gave each other Caswell Massey and Yardley for Christmas. We loved them! Sweetheart soap was for every day, and my dad used Zest as well as some heavy-duty hand soap with pumice in it, Lava. Grandmother would use her potato peeler to scape off some Ivory and boil it in a big pot on the stove to use to launder a delicate hand wash. None of us could stand the smell of Ivory, though - "Like a gas station lavatory" as my grandmother would say. She felt the same way about Camay. Jackie Kennedy made the news when her favorite, Phisohex, was taken off the market for the same reason as Dial. It became Phisoderm. Thanks so much for this fun trip down memory lane. I really enjoyed it!

Jlyn: they've been promoting it again because of it's germ killing properties. I've seen ads for it a couple of times in the last few weeks. It used to be a deodorant soap like Dial, a big hit in the '60s IIRC.

I’m so disappointed with Kirk’s it dried my skin out. I read alot of reviews that said it happened. But I will try the rest of these. I also purchased Florida Water which I adore! All these products I learned from you! Thank you!

That's not surprising about Kirk's. It's an all-coconut soap, using unstripped coconut oil that therefore still has the irritating short-chain soaps. Even without them it would be degreasing as soaps go. In general the more C12 (lauric) soap a soap mixture contains, the more grease-cutting, sudsy, and irritating it is. C12 comes from coconut, palm kernel, and (more expensively but less irritatingly) babassu oil. Stripping out the shorter-than-12-carbon fatty acids makes it less irritating without impairing its grease-cutting and sudsing. Conversely, the more C18 (stearic) soap, the less grease-cutting and more demulcent a soap is. In between is in between. Traditionally the longer chain soaps come from tallow, and now largely from vegetable equivalents. Other than Kirk's, bar soaps skewing toward the coconut, high suds end are Silk/Silk Road from Abu Dhabi, Rainbow Research, and then slightly less so with Camay, Lux, and Lifebuoy and then Coast and Dial (regular, not hypoallergenic), which also have extra fatty acid. Ivory is middle-of-the-road, as is Palmolive. Toward the low end, i.e. milder and less sudsy, were the original Dial, Tone, and Pure & Natural.

I use Satya Sai Baba's Nag Champa bar soap, it doesn't irritate my skin, but it rinses clean, and I don't feel sticky afterwards. Have to get it off the internet tho, stores around here don't carry anything but the major brands like Dove, Dial, etc.
