I am not going to give away my age but I grew up in the 60's and 70's. Breakfast was usually eggs and toast or cereal with a side of fruit. lunch was usually a sandwich a salad or soup. Dinner was always a meat, starch and salad. Glasses of milk was with every meal. No coffee till we were older of course and it was made in a percolator and tasted really good. Dessert in our house was not every day. Sweets were considered only treats once in a while. Soda was not allowed in the house and the only drinks besides milk was ice water and juice. Going out to eat was only for special times or the weekends. We walked alot and there were rarely any obese young people. These diets remind me of growing up. That was a lot of fun to listen to.

Worth noting that a sandwich made at home with typical bread, a slice of cheese, and lunch meat is very different from a huge sandwich bought at a restaurant that is grilled in butter and drowned in mayo and cheese! Same with salads. Salads from restaurants have fried chicken strips, tons of dressing, and croutons and cheese. The size of servings are much much bigger now!

Ive seen the pin up girls and women back then. Curvaceous was in style in the 50s. yes women spend less time on household chores and cooking, because society now expects women to cook,clean, take care of children and work a full time job all while simultaneously having a nice body. Its virtually impossible standards and many women are burned out. In the 50s most women could stay at home.

I’m a dialysis nurse and where I live the majority of my patients are on dialysis due to high blood pressure or diabetes or both. Unfortunately the population is primarily African American. I don’t say this in a racist way. That population is just more affected by these illnesses.
@Nia-aliah2 жыл бұрын
It’s not racist at all! When I was in highschool at gym, we read a paper that black people suffer the most through this. It’s honestly disappointing & I tell people I know to try health stores even though its expensive. It’s worth eating healthy than spending so much of your life with medications & treatments
@valfletcher92852 жыл бұрын
This is true and also Native Americans. Many things are genetic. My family has their health issues I have taken note of them after watching the 3 generations older than me.

@@valfletcher9285 this is why its so important for poc to watch what they eat. My granddad was a very active 60 year old guy. He biked ride around the lake, cooked at home, and everything but got cancer because it can be genetic. It’s sad
@Rosewitch-lt9rw5 ай бұрын
If you actually look at most traditional diets in Sub-Sahara Africa their diets are incredibly high in legumes and vegetables, especially root vegetables. They have far lower rates of colon cancer compared to African American population in general. I do wonder if genetics and evolution play a role because that's incredibly different from the SAD. Their ancestors ate a very, very different diet than they do in the US today. I hope that doesn't come across as racist. I just found it interesting that when non-Western populations exchange their traditional diets for modern Western diets they tend to immediately have health problems that didn't exist at all in their cultures at all. Especially, compared to others that stick to traditional ones that their ancestors ate for thousands of years.

Actually I think that most people in the 50s had sliced white bread, like wonder bread, at least in the US. It was only in the 70s that "health food" came in with brown bread etc. I remember my Dad calling wheat germ "bird food"! But people were more active and had smaller portions I think. Ice cream was more of a treat and didn't come in huge containers! And there were far fewer fast food places for sure. People tended to eat at home and snack less. I know my mom really discouraged eating between meals! Also girdles and waist cinchers were a thing until the late 70s!

@@Laurajaneatelier People are much more aware of its harm now. Back then it was actively promoted as modern, labour saving way of feeding a family. Also it included toxic ingridient that were taken of the market. Sliced Wonderdread was more popular than bakery stuff. If u look at 19th century, canned goods were made w toxins like sulfates (makes canned peas green), food colouring like mercury and other toxins, bread w plaster of paris, sour milk w Borax to kill sourness. Foods adulterated w garbage & toxins to increase bulk. Broxy meat (diseased animals). Things did get better in 20th century due to health and safety regulation and refrigeration. However 50s foods were still canned and highly processed. This whole thing about food being more wholesome in the past is just that, a myth that doesn't stand up to proper scrutiny.
