As someone born in the 70’s, I just don’t feel as consumed as some others might. I do what works for me and don’t feel the need to own everything… or try everything. So much wasted money.

I was also born in the 70s and I feel the same way. I love beauty products and definitely indulge in that area but I certainly don't buy every single new product that comes out and I don't feel like I am missing out on anything. I just buy what appeals to me and works for me. 😊

I was born in 1994, but since my mom had a stroke early spring, and having her as a dependent, my interest in consuming has gone down so much. Can imagine having a kid would do the same thing. Priorities have changed so much.

Things you acquire actually have spiritual energy attached to them. Beautiful things remind us that life is good. That’s why overconsumption is so appealing to the soul but leaves you empty if you don’t consider the spiritual value of what you’re collecting.

I was a preteen and teenager during the 1970s. To this day, I've maintained a simple three-step ritual: cleanse, tone, and moisturize. Ponds cleansing cream, Witch hazel, and Ponds moisture cream. I still use erase! I'm good to go with a few Revlon lipsticks, 1 blush, and 1 makeup base! Thank you, Laura! You are such a truther! I love your videos!

I dress very retro/vintage, and wear makeup to match. I always say that I don't have to worry about being in fashion when I'm 70+ years out of fashion to begin with! I have a curated collection of makeup and skincare products that work well for me (and my sensitive skin), and that's it. I don't think I've bought new makeup except replacements in YEARS. I love having a "signature" look, style, and fragrance. It makes me feel elegant and put together.

I have been in the skin care aisle for MONTHS and will spend 15/20/25 minutes looking for a product to address my concerns and am always SO overwhelmed with all the products and different brands and different choices (do I need this, that, that or this)! I will Google products and still leave with nothing. I would visit the skin care aisle every day and pick stuff up, put it in my cart just to put it back and leave with nothing until I FINALLY bought something. It’s so overwhelming. And I LOVED the packaging makeup used to have, it used to be so pretty and now some are really nice but most is just plastic. Social media and fast fashion/beauty ruin everything.

I fell into a huge skincare routine in 2016. I destroyed my moisture barrier, oversensitized my skin, and got that orangepeel skin texture on my face. It took years to heal, and to this day, all I can put on my face is Cetaphil. And I paid hundreds of dollars to donthis to myself!

Thank you Laura for all your time & work/research in all your videos, but especially this one. It is SO true. I am guilty as charged with lipstick & eyeshadow palettes. Then you get the item & there's the letdown realizing this wasn't so great & you usually find you've already got those shades in your stash. Perfume industry is the same. Fragrances that I had used over many years don't smell the same & they DON'T last but for a short time. This is proven by the manufacturer when they then come out with the "Intense" version. Total ripoff!

I love makeup history!!❤ I am 51 years old and a veteran makeup artist of 30 years. I have seen and experienced many makeup trends through the years. Lol.😊 For me, it was Merle Norman cosmetics, which started in the 1920s. Merle Norman was a great inventor of the cleansing cream, a face mask called Miracol, and their foundation cream, Powder Base. It's a great brand that doesn't get enough recognition. Please add Merle Norman to your history of makeup brands. Also, please try them . I worked for them for 10 years and grew up seeing my mother using their products. Makeup brands use to be passed down by our mothers and grandmothers, even Aunts, sometimes. Loyal customers, even generations, would use the same products keeping companies in business. Love the choices out there, but they can be overwhelming at times. I have way too much myself, but I love it all. I give a lot to my family & friends. I also review products but have cut back and give some of it away. 😊

I found a line of products that work for me. Never bought other products. For my body I use vaseline intensive care.

Made the decision to reduce everything about 15 years ago. Make up is now one small bag. Hair care is two solid products. One oil and one condition & style product. Cleansing face is two step. Doing great with the exception of spf (3 products) and lip balm...... why do i have over 30 odd lip balms! 😂

I don't think the past is better, right now skin care has so much technology and we know so much more. Having said that, we are bombarded with products which is indeed overwhelming and confusing. In my opinion take the best of this era, find the routine that brings you more joy and fit your skin needs, and keep it. At the end for our skin the best is consistency.

I don't like spending a lot of money on beauty products, and I know for sure that I won't follow difficult multy-steps routines, been there, tried that, haven't worked out. So I've done some permanent make up for eyebrows and eyeliner, because I like the look but don't want to do them every day, and developed the very simplified routine for myself, that I'm doing my best to follow. Selected all products I enjoy, except for mascara, still looking for that one, but everything else I will buy again when it's finished

I'm in my 40s, so I found what I love ❤ That being said, I'm trying to use up the stuff I have bought through the years. I have given away most of my old collection (30+ brushes,50+ lipsticks, 30+nail polishes, 10+ concealers, 10+ bronzers and 20+ blushes, tons of liners and mascaras), but I kept my precious limited edition Guerlain compact, since it is as stunning as the day I got it 15+ years ago. I also mix up my favorite shades of concealer, powder, lipstick and blush to get the perfect shades and reuse beautiful packing I like, so everything feels more special to me. For example, I love those wet n wild matte lipsticks, but the packaging is hideous, so I just transfer the lipstick to a beautiful lipstick case I love. God, that was long 😅

I do wear makeup every day and i do full skincare of the body and face every day. But i’ve done that many years since 2014. And i had lip pencil since 2014 too. I overlined my lips back then. The new style is old for me. But i don’t buy as much makeup or skincare anymore. I test some new skincare like korean skincare. And i like it. But as you say! Nothing feels special i just do it like i make my coffee in the morning like a routine.

I equate one perfume to one pair of shoes. The same pair of shoes isn’t right fit every occasion. It’s ok to have more than one perfume

I’m trying to finish up a lot of my older makeup so that I only have one or two things per category that really work for me! Still on the hunt for a foundation and concealer that work for my skin though and I wish I didn’t have to spend so much money to test things out :(

One thing you didn't take into account, is that the western diet nowadays compared to the 50s/60s/70s etc is way worse for our health, including our skin, hence more problematic skin issues cropping up and needing more products. It's a bit naive to claim that back in the day all what was needed was the bare minimum for great skin and now we are using too many products. While I agree that over consumption is a huge problem in our society, we have more persistent skin issues as a side-effect of a shit diet and lifestyle, which can really effect our hormone production etc.

There are countless studies that show that we have more skin issues because we use more products on our skin and disrupt our microbiome and acid mantle. Of course diet plays a big role too but too many products absolutely play a role in the epidemic of skin issues nowadays
