I dress very retro/vintage, and wear makeup to match. I always say that I don't have to worry about being in fashion when I'm 70+ years out of fashion to begin with! I have a curated collection of makeup and skincare products that work well for me (and my sensitive skin), and that's it. I don't think I've bought new makeup except replacements in YEARS. I love having a "signature" look, style, and fragrance. It makes me feel elegant and put together.

I have been in the skin care aisle for MONTHS and will spend 15/20/25 minutes looking for a product to address my concerns and am always SO overwhelmed with all the products and different brands and different choices (do I need this, that, that or this)! I will Google products and still leave with nothing. I would visit the skin care aisle every day and pick stuff up, put it in my cart just to put it back and leave with nothing until I FINALLY bought something. It’s so overwhelming. And I LOVED the packaging makeup used to have, it used to be so pretty and now some are really nice but most is just plastic. Social media and fast fashion/beauty ruin everything.

I fell into a huge skincare routine in 2016. I destroyed my moisture barrier, oversensitized my skin, and got that orangepeel skin texture on my face. It took years to heal, and to this day, all I can put on my face is Cetaphil. And I paid hundreds of dollars to donthis to myself!

I love makeup history!!❤ I am 51 years old and a veteran makeup artist of 30 years. I have seen and experienced many makeup trends through the years. Lol.😊 For me, it was Merle Norman cosmetics, which started in the 1920s. Merle Norman was a great inventor of the cleansing cream, a face mask called Miracol, and their foundation cream, Powder Base. It's a great brand that doesn't get enough recognition. Please add Merle Norman to your history of makeup brands. Also, please try them . I worked for them for 10 years and grew up seeing my mother using their products. Makeup brands use to be passed down by our mothers and grandmothers, even Aunts, sometimes. Loyal customers, even generations, would use the same products keeping companies in business. Love the choices out there, but they can be overwhelming at times. I have way too much myself, but I love it all. I give a lot to my family & friends. I also review products but have cut back and give some of it away. 😊

I don't think the past is better, right now skin care has so much technology and we know so much more. Having said that, we are bombarded with products which is indeed overwhelming and confusing. In my opinion take the best of this era, find the routine that brings you more joy and fit your skin needs, and keep it. At the end for our skin the best is consistency.

I have given away most of my old collection (30+ brushes,50+ lipsticks, 30+nail polishes, 10+ concealers, 10+ bronzers and 20+ blushes, tons of liners and mascaras), but I kept my precious limited edition Guerlain compact, since it is as stunning as the day I got it 15+ years ago. I also mix up my favorite shades of concealer, powder, lipstick and blush to get the perfect shades and reuse beautiful packing I like, so everything feels more special to me. For example, I love those wet n wild matte lipsticks, but the packaging is hideous, so I just transfer the lipstick to a beautiful lipstick case I love. God, that was long 😅

One thing you didn't take into account, is that the western diet nowadays compared to the 50s/60s/70s etc is way worse for our health, including our skin, hence more problematic skin issues cropping up and needing more products. It's a bit naive to claim that back in the day all what was needed was the bare minimum for great skin and now we are using too many products. While I agree that over consumption is a huge problem in our society, we have more persistent skin issues as a side-effect of a shit diet and lifestyle, which can really effect our hormone production etc.

There are countless studies that show that we have more skin issues because we use more products on our skin and disrupt our microbiome and acid mantle. Of course diet plays a big role too but too many products absolutely play a role in the epidemic of skin issues nowadays

They've made it illegal to make anything with certain materials for political reasons and thus the quality isn't there.
