In 1985 I was 14 years old and my mum was depressed because she'd separated from my Dad. In a highly uncharacteristic move, she bought she and I a complete Mary Kay skincare and makeup range for each of us. It cost her a fortune. I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. May Kay Cosmetics worked so well for my mum and I and I continued to use their products for 20 years. Loved one of their lipsticks in the colour "Toffee". I miss that time and my great skin back then. Btw, my Mum recovered from her divorce and has been living her best life ever since.

The problem with Mary Kay is that for sales director's to hit their unit sales quotas, they have to constantly recruit new consultants who they strongly encourage to invest in large amount of inventory. I remember getting an email from my sales director who earned a 'free' trip to Hawaii thanking us for our hard work. I realized that she earned that trip on my debt. Heck, instead of buying inventory, I should have taken my family to Hawaii.
@CapriciousCapricrn Жыл бұрын
Yes; soon after joining, our sales director told us this brutal truth; the key to making it in Mary Kay is recruiting beauty consultants, who will then purchase costly supplies of inventory. The company encourages its consultant to purchase large amounts of it and isn't upfront about this in their recruitment efforts. A total pyramid scheme IMO.

I had a great aunt very high up in Mary Kay. She was named a regional manager or some such. My mom adored her. She had earned a car,a home, vacations, wore very expensive clothes and smelled rich. She would only ever call or visit to try and recruit my mom and I. Smh. My mom only ever wanted to be hugged by her and this woman only looked at us as meal tickets. What’s even more despicable is we were dirt poor! Poorer than poor. My aunt knew our situation. My dad was sick with kidney disease, my sister and I were 2 of the youngest ever at the time diagnosed with it, too. Dad couldn’t work anymore, it was the 80’s and VW plant had just closed depressing our local economy to pretty desperate depths. My mom would take me to stand in the government cheese line just to get food so we didn’t starve. Stuff tasted godawful, too. The aunt never cared. My mom thought the world of that woman and I don’t think she’d piss on us if we were on fire! I did go to a regional meeting once she invited me to attend. She bragged me up as her niece, her diamond laden hands on my shoulders. She never once asked me about me and simply went into a sales pitch to become a seller under her. Smh. I declined. I knew nobody was buying that stuff in the early 90’s. I did try selling Avon once, nobody wants it. I dared uttering the word “Avon” and you would have thought I just told them the Aristocrat joke! 😂 Very cringe, their reaction. It was the last time I saw her, my mom has seen her thru the years and the visits were always only sales calls. My mom just couldn’t see it for what it was thru her rose colored glasses.

I think Mary Kay is a good product. They have great skin care lines and a large variety of lipsticks and foundations. If you decide to be a consultant, to earn extra cash or a discount on you products I say go for it but please don’t expect to become rich. Like all MLM you are pushed to recruit people and “sell” your inventory to the new recruits. I actually know people that just do retail sales and consulting to clients that love the products and are repeat customers. They made more money that way than they ever did by recruiting new consultants.

When i was around 5 or 6 years old in 1989, my mother started selling Mary Kay products. She was a very hard-working woman and set the foundation for me that anything was possible. She would do the paper route before the sun came up (back when your newspaper actually got dropped off on your doorstep). Then, she attended to her 4 young children during the day if we weren't in school. Then, in the evening, she would host mary Kay gatherings and sell her heart out. My mother was actually a very excellent sales woman. Unfortunately, at the same time, my father ventured very deep into his gambling habit and took my mother down with him. But before that, she was very successful at what she did, and if i remember right, she won mostly extra products or a percentage off. The actual big gifts were just way beyond her selling limits, but dear god, did she try. 😊

I worked in Accounting in Corporate Office in Mississauga Ontario Canada. This was back in the 80s. Mary Kay was probably THE BEST Company I ever worked for. They were EXTREMELY generous to the Corporate Employees. Sports Days, Golf Days, Canadas Wonderland, Meals and Hotel stays during Canadian Conventions. I also remember the GREAT Christmas parties and Dinners at top Restaurants 😍😘♥️🥰🇨🇦 Very few Canadian Companies due any of this now. THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY MARY KAY❤. RIP Sweet Lady 🙏🏼🙏🏼 ( I did have the GREAT privilege of meeting Mary Kay backstage at Convention one time. This was when Toronto still had the OKeefe Center on Front Street. Mary Kay was stunning and so sweet ❤)

I was a Mary Kay consultant around 1981 while going through a divorce. The weekly meetings were very uplifting and positive. Saw MK at the annual convention in Dallas and she had a great presence on stage. Yes you did have to constantly buy products and my Director kept on telling me to buy stock in the company - always pressuring everyone. When they bought back the company I lost all my money invested in MK Cosmetics stocks!!! This company was definitely a loose-loose situation for me!!! I did love her lipsticks.

Very interesting video Laura! Even as a male I have always been interested in Mary Kay. I can recall my mom selling it growing up, and we even went to one of her conventions in Texas. My grandma also used the brand since the 70s and the results are incredible to this day. Really fascinating brand and almost has a mystique that surrounds it!

I see that "mystique" as a spiritual thing. Mary Kay started her business on Friday the 13th in September of 1963, just blocks away from where Kennedy was killed in November of the same year. JFK's assassination spurred a cascade of difficulty in the US, and I believe that God had a hand in making sure that Mary Kay was around to lend some hope and integrity to the world. ❤❤❤ God First, Family Second, Career Third.

I had an older coworker at the bank I worked at back in the 90s (I was in my 20s and she was in her 50s at the time) who had a Mary Kay pink Cadillac. She even wore the blonde wig and just looked like she owned the company. What a sweet lady she was with a self depreciating sense of humor and fun to work with. I myself used MK for a time in the mid 80s but once they "improved" the formula that ended our relationship.

I sadly was a consultant also. Although I sold quite a bit, I never won awards or anything as team building is the number one requirement for anything. Last I knew, Cadillac requirements were $25k sales per quarter and keeping a team of at least 15. And yes, you had to keep inventory. I hated that they would change all the packaging constantly to make us have to rebuy many items. And everything has to be bought: bags, giveaways, the list went on. I also did not agree with wearing skirts and dresses to everything so one should also know that. I personally always loved their skincare, but believe it has changed substantially and it’s not as good as it used to be. Quite honestly, I feel there are great products at the drugstore for cheaper…for example Olay’s regenerist line which has won many beauty awards.

I have used some of the products for about 40 years but I dislike how they have discontinued so many fragrances & changed the packaging to boring black instead of keeping it their signature pink color. It made it easy to find the MK lipstick among the other generic looking cases. On another note, my cousin, who lives in Plano, TX, used to go to the same church Mary Kay attended.

I've seen others comment about having inventory and that was the unsettling for me too. I didn't realize I'd be expected to carry inventory when I signed up. Overall, Mary Kay is a wonderful company with amazing products, but the consultants at the "bottom" pay for the wealth of their "up line."

I “sold” Mary Kay in 1991 at the age of 19. All my friends and their moms said they couldn’t afford the starter kit, which is what a customer had to buy initially. I believe it was 3 skin care products for $30, so $10 for each skin care product. $30 was too much for the average gal to want to pay for, for skin care. When I first thought about starting, my recruiter tried to convince me to borrow money from a relative so I could get the starter kit to become a sales lady, which was ridiculous. I hated that she pressured me into borrowing money. I ended up somehow earning the money on my own and bought the starter kit. The only way I was going to earn money was if I recruited multiple people under me and I would get a percentage of their sales. I hated it. I ended up using all the products myself as I wasn’t a good salesperson I guess.

I rarely wore makeup, but when I did, Toffee lipstick was my favorite! Back then, we were required to wear makeup at events. I sold Mary Kay cosmetics a long time ago. I liked the products and made some good sales, but I didn't recruit anyone else, and that is how they make their money. Each consultant was to recruit a team of about 10 more consultants. A portion of their earnings would be reflected in the first consultant's reports, thus she gets credit for the sales while the others did the work. So, yeah, a pyramid scheme, but it was fun and exciting for a while, and it really built my confidence. The products were good, and the #2 moisturizer left my skin feeling sooo smooth. The sales presentation was brief and helpful, just basic skin care and light makeup, but most ladies really liked how they looked. That's what made it so popular.

I’m also curious about the cosmetics that were available for Black women and other women of color over the decades, especially foundation and face powder shades. Did Hollywood makeup artists and makeup manufacturers formulate colors just for minority actresses and actors? What did the average woman of color use for matching their makeup to their darker skin tones? Future videos on these topics would also be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I used the products for many years… I think it helped keep my skin young and would use it again. I miss the vintage pink

I was a top sales director in MK for 3 years. I had the cars and still have my BB pins! It was a dream time but going high in the company required more effort to keep this position and I didn't stay at that level long. I don't regret my years in MK

A lady that my Mom used to work with sold Mary Kay products. Idk if she actually made any money from it, but I remember attending a few parties that my Mom and Aunts hosted. My Mom didnt wear a ton of makeup, but she mostly used Mary Kay, as well as one of their facial moisturizers and the Satin Hands line until the 2000s when it started getting too expensive. One of my Aunts used the TimeWise skincare for like 15 years, and her skin always looked great. Im pretty sure it's all overpriced, but it definitely holds nostalgia for me.

I sold MK about 35 years ago. It is a MLM scheme. The ones who make the most money were at the top of the pyramid, of course. I attended a convention and had never experienced anything like that before then. The thing was, it took up a lot of my time. I had a full time day job, a family and taking care of my ill mother so I had to quit after about a year, because I didn't make enough to quit my job. I didn't get a pink Cadillac, but I still have the pink Cadillac calculator I was awarded. The trunk opened up to expose the calculator. I later found out that the real Cadillacs they gave was actually a lease.

I am a former aesthetician now a Dental hygienist. They are good products. I haven’t experienced it recently. When I was 19 living in Canada, I was about to start selling Mary Kay but then I left the country to head to Sweden. By the way, I am now almost 60. They do have very good products. Hope this helps.

Oh wow this brand really takes me back to the 70's and 80's.. My mom bought Mary Kay and i loved sneaking into her makeup bag when i was little. When I became a teenager in the mid 80's, my mom would let me use her Mary Kay products sometimes. I loved the lipbrush that came with the lipstick; everytime i used it i felt so glamorous 💃💃💃 Mary Kay felt high end compared to the Covergirl products i had of my own at the time. Up here in Canada Avon was more popular, but Mary Kay was considered a lil higher end and i think it may have been more expensive than Avon too. Thank you so much for the top shelf content gurl.. and for the lil stroll down memory lane. You're awesome!❤❤❤💄💄💄😘😘😘

It's because it's sold in Europe it has to be up to European standards. Over 1200 ingredients aren't allowed in Europe as they are safe.😊

I was 13 or 14 when I attended a Mary Kay party hosted by my aunt. I was very interested in skin care and makeup and was excited about the products they offered. I was also using Avon as my grandmother was friends with an Avon sales rep. Mary Kay had lip glosses I really liked.

I become Mary kay consultant in the 1990 and spend $300 to 400 dollars. Ended giving my make up and products to my family as gifts. I still have my pins.
