Learned MLA 7th edition when I was in middle school, and I remember being so confused when they made the switch to 8th edition! I just graduated high school this month and will be attending university to become an English teacher. Crazy how time flies.

Welcome, Annabeth! Happily, the leap from 8th to 9th is teeny-tiny compared to the leap we all took from 7th to 8th. Time also plays tricks on me. Can't believe the last update was FIVE years ago. Whoa.

Thank you for the video! I hope that OWL @ Purdue updates the MLA resource guide as well since I use their website with my students a lot. We used OWL when we were doing virtual learning this year. Take care! 😀

I'm sure they'll get on it soon, Emma. I'm guessing the sites are aiming to be live with the updates for the Fall 2021 semester.

APA made changes as well

I heard that, but I haven't ever taught at a school that uses APA. That's a path I (thankfully?) haven't walked.

Thank you for doing this so we don’t have to! 😅 Although I’m not teaching full-time anymore, I do write high school curriculum and want to stay informed. ✏️👩💻 I also loved reading On Writing in college!! Such a good book.

I taught citation in a middle school natural science classroom and I found the MLA Handbook outdated and found out that my students engaged and connected more with visual one page handouts and showing students how to search for citation help online. I only allowed my students access onto certain websites and found that several of them became confused being required to handwrite and log their citations throughout their project and at the end of the unit I demonstrated how to utilize the scholarly citation websites online. My main concern was teaching them the seriousness of plagiarism and how important citations are on their school work. In hindsight, the handbook was barely used as a resource and I just wonder if writing handbooks are obsolete and a waste of a resource when their are thousands of scholarly articles regarding the topic online and there's more free market educational resources you can find online.

As long as we're being picky, "pp 73-84" needs an n-dash, not a hyphen.

Thank you so much! Do you find it necessary to mention APA when teaching MLA?
@laurarandazzo11583 жыл бұрын
Not really, Kimberly. It's enough for my students to wrap their heads around MLA. When they get to a college that requires APA, they should have the critical thinking skills to figure it out. 😉

I think this varies. At my school, we teach honors science students APA in science class (and annotated bibliography!) but that’s considered advanced for them.

@@BetterScienceTeaching Great point! My schools, or at least the English departments, didn’t get there. Annotated bibliographies = 🤪

I am confused about why you included pages on your sample entry for the Stephen King book.
@laurarandazzo11583 жыл бұрын
Hi Amy, That's because those are the chunk of pages that I took information from to use in the essay. It would help the reader retrace my steps to show the precise section of the book that was used. Hope this helps - and thanks for watching! Laura

As I understand MLA 8th, you wouldn't note page numbers in this case, per the section about location (46). The page numbers would indicate the location of a text or section within the larger container (such as essay, article, or story within an anthology--the container), or a named chapter within the text. However, that named section would have been identified by title ahead of the Container text (I believe this reference was to On Writing, by King?). If you are simply citing a novel or a complete book, you wouldn't list page numbers in the WC entry but would include them in your in-text citation. Further, the example of the Twitter post for Celeste Ng includes the URL, but according to MLA 8 it should omit the "Http://" portion (110; section 2.5). Again, this is MLA 8th, but I wouldn't think that would change with MLA 9th (my book is on order--I will know in about two days).

So, we have now moved on to "Is there a container in this class?"
