"Juliette" is one of the dozens of songs that was wrote by Jonghyun. You might recognize the melody of the song because it was originally a song covered by the American singer/actor Corbin Bleu called "Deal with It." When SM bought the rights to the song they kept the melody, but Jonghyun rewrote the lyrics. :D As you can see, Jonghyun was writing songs and making his mark almost from the beginning. And Minho also wrote his rap section in the song. Minho has credits on almost all of SHINee's songs because he writes all his rap parts. This was also part of the era where SHINee started the trend of the colored skinny jeans. SHINee are known for their "school boy fashion/student look" and everyone started wearing colored skinny jeans at this time because of SHINee. They are even trendsetters when it comes to fashion. Never following trends, but always creating them in everything they do. :D It is safe to say that the original trend of colored skinny jeans in the west was probably a transplant from the trend that SHINee started. A lot of foreign idols over the years have told SHINee that the fashion trends they started in Korea were adopted by them in the U.S., Canada, China, Thailand, etc. That's how influential SHINee are. The glasses and masks they are wearing in this MV are crazy because they are supposed to be attending a sort of trendy version of a masquerade event like when Romeo and Juliet secretly meet each other at Juliet's family's costume masquerade ball. The SHINee boys are all supposed to be Romeo and they are searching for their Juliette -- Who is played by Krystal from F(X), SHINee's sister group. As you discovered, Jonghyun is known for his Michael Jackson-like vocals. That's just Jonghyun's classic high note style. Jonghyun is known for his MJ style cry and for sounding a little like Michael when he sings any of SHINee's classic R&B songs. Taemin is the one that dances like MJ, but it's Jonghyun that is the one that sounds like him. During "Juliette" (and "Amigo"), Taemin was still growing into his voice, so he doesn't really have a whole lot of lines in the song, so instead they highlighted more of his dance skills. "Juliette" came out in 2009 (promoted alongside "Amigo" which was their repackaged album single), so Taemin was a year older than in "Replay" -- he was almost 16 years old here. Minho and Key were 17, Onew was 19 and Jonghyun had just turned 19. As with all of SHINee's MVs, if you really want to see their dancing, you have to check out their performance version MV -- which is designed to highlight the choreography -- or better yet, a live performance. Plus, there is nothing better than SHINee live. Check out their SHINee World Concert V (SWC5) performance of "Juliette" (and "Amigo") from 2016, kzbin.info/www/bejne/bmLUpaqrjM-Mpck. Fun fact: In 2011, as part of their Japanese debut, they also came out with a Japanese version of "Juliette".

I love seeing new SHINee journeys! It is the best thing ever to see people gradually fall down the rabbit hole with the rest of us, lol. Taemin is my bias and was from the first moment I discovered SHINee (Lucifer dance practice video and that blasted shirt of his), but every single other member is my biaswrecker because they are all so precious, so hilarious, so sweet and kind, and so extremely talented. Honestly SHINee is the best, period. I hope you'll react to some variety content too sometime during your SHINee journey; if you're not familiar with their personalities and family dynamic, it would be well worth seeing them behind the scenes and just interacting with each other to really see how close they are and how special they are as a group. Someone else already left the list of Korean MVs, so here are the Japanese MVs in order (hopefully I'm not missing any): Replay (Japanese version) > Juliette (Japanese version) > Lucifer (Japanese version) > Dazzling Girl > 1000 Years, Always By Your Side (1000年、ずっとそばにいて) > Fire > 3 2 1 > Lucky Star > Downtown Baby > Your Number > DxDxD > Winter Wonderland > Get The Treasure > Superstar I'd love to see you check these out, because the Japanese market is slightly different so we hear a different side of SHINee, with some beautiful ballads and great upbeat pop songs. A lot of their Japanese tracks are my favorite songs SHINee has ever done. It would be awesome for you to react to these MVs too, but the downside is the full versions of these MVs can be hard to find and react to on KZbin due to the aggressive copyright protections from the Japanese music distributors. If you're interested, you can look for the few Japanese MVs posted on the SMTOWN channel; those seem to have more luck in being used in reaction videos, and they are the full-length versions. Edit - From what I can tell, these are the only Japanese MVs on the SMTOWN channel: Your Number > Winter Wonderland > Get The Treasure > Superstar

Love like Oxygen => Jonghyun's MJ inspired voice became a variety staple for the members, when Onew imitated him into a Donald Duck kind of of overexaggeration. He has admitted that he really wanted to sound like MJ for that song (both Onew and Key try for that pressure voice at the start of their lines in the first verse, too, honestly). If you want to see this live with choreo, I can't recommend a special 2015 performance enough, which they made when Key became a permanent host (well, for around two years, I think he is still the longest running one?) for MCountdown. Since they won their first MCountdown show with LLO they decided to go back to the roots, then realised that with their mature voices the old bgm wouldn't work, so you only get their voices, plus music track, live. Oh and shawol chants ^^. Gorgeous. Linking to the official "fancam" for that => kzbin.info/www/bejne/mKWolayJqbGdiLM

Although "Amigo" sounds like the Spanish word for friend, in Korean A.Mi.Go was/is a well known acronym for the Korean phrase that means, something like: "You will suffer on your way to falling in love with a beauty." So, the story in SHINee's "Amigo" MV is about how the girl stole Minho's heart. She took his heart and left him with the note that is hanging around his neck. She has unfrozen him with her touch and put color back into the world. However, as the song says, "Cold heart, baby ... Cold eyes, baby." They are saying they have fallen for her, but as "the ice princess," she is always unavailable and just out of arm's reach. Although, they can't help falling for her anyway. That is why Minho is chasing after her. If you notice, she is always one step ahead of him. He can never catch her no matter how hard he tires. That is why she is the "Ice princess." she is sexy and intoxicating, but she is always playing hard to get. The MV is literally depicting every word of the song. As the English translation of the lyrics say: "go, I run, ... Challenges are always fun, ... But the world isn’t as easy as it seems. ... I lose my mind when I see her, ... I'm unable to grasp her by this hand," etc. The story in the MV makes a lot more sense when you combine it with the lyrics. On a side note: Minho is the visual of the group who is known for his natural model good looks. His nickname is Flaming Charisma and he is also known for being super athletic and competitive, so that is why he is the member who is chasing the girl. In real life Minho doesn't stop until he wins and he hates to lose. He is good at almost every sport so he very rarely loses. :D But even he is no match for the "ice princess." Minho has the deepest voice, so SM made him the group's main rapper, and Key is the lead rapper. (Key is also fluent in English, so you might notice that his rap style sounds a little more western.) But, because SM originally wanted to make SHINee a hip-hop group, they were all trained in rapping. Next to R&B, I think Rock is SHINee's next best genre of music and they often do rock style remixes of their songs at their concerts. You should check out their rock version of "Amigo" during their first SHINee World Concert world tour in 2011, kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5C3mH6GgdKlgLs.

Thank you so much for reacting to SHINee! It's always lovely to see people discovering them, but it's fun in a nicely different way when it's by people who already know of them.. like they know the dots, but only now do they connect for them. :) I can't wait to see more of your SHINee reactions! Also, have you listened to Key's latest album? If you haven't, I hope you can also do a reaction for his Bad Love M/V which came out last September. I have a feeling it will absolutely blow you away. :) If you ever decide to do an album listen, that would also be perfect for it because every single song on there is a banger... it's an absolute no-skip album!

The Korean version of "Love Like Oxygen" was released as the lead promotional track on SHINee's first full length album The SHINee World in August 2008. It was their first release after their debut single "Replay" in May 2008. Fun fact: They also released a Japanese version of "Love Like Oxygen" in 2011 as part of the group's Japanese debut. Taemin had just turned 15 years old right before this MV was released. SHINee's level of professionalism and maturity was there from the very beginning -- there were only 2 or 3 months between "Replay" and "Love like Oxygen." :D It's just SHINee's style, they are constantly switching up the feel and vibe with every song you hear from them. As you may have noticed, you didn't hear Taemin sing very much in this song. In SHINee's early days Taemin didn't have a whole lot of lines in their songs. As you may know, people even used to make fun of Taemin's singing and they would say that he was tone deaf and couldn't sing. However, it's sort of a misconception that Taemin "couldn't sing." it wasn't that he couldn't sing, it was just that he debuted when he was so young -- he was only 14 years old -- that his voice hadn't really developed yet and he didn't really have a good grasp of how to use his voice and produce the sounds he wanted with it. So, in the beginning, when he sang he was often flat or his voice cracked or he was off key or out of tune, etc. And because he was being compared to the other members of SHINee who are all 2 to 4 years older than him, and the other members had such phenomenal voices to start out with, it really made Taemin sound like he was lacking. That's why in these first few songs you will see that he only has a few lines, and most of the time he was just given big solo dance breaks to fill the stage at his parts in the song. However, if he was really tone deaf he never would have become an SM Idol trainee -- SM would have put him on the dance track and probably steered him toward becoming a backup dancer -- and he definitely would have never become the amazing singer that he is today. Someone who is truly tone deaf is physically unable to hear the difference in the notes and is unable to carry a tune. But Taemin really wanted to prove to everyone that he wasn't just a dancer, so he spent a lot of extra time concentrating on vocal lessons and the other SHINee members -- especially Onew and Jonghyun -- spent some serious time coaching and mentoring him until he learned what it took to match their vocal range and to use his voice. If you notice, Taemin's style of singing, especially in SHINee songs, is a lot like Jonghyun -- SHINee's main vocalist, and one of the best vocalists in the industry. And the more you get into SHINee, you will see that Taemin fills in for Jonghyun whenever Jonghyun was unable to participate in a performance. And even today, Taemin often takes over the high notes and the parts that I think would probably have been Jonghyun's parts in their new songs -- he has now become one of SHINee's main vocalists. Jonghyun was the one that really took Taemin under his wing and helped him to become the singer and performer that he is today. So, many think that Taemin's voice emulates Jonghyun because he is the one that taught Taemin to sing. Jonghyun has always been Taemin's biggest supporter and the one that rooted for him the hardest and loudest out of anyone. Jonghyun is famous for that MJ growl and vocal cry that you heard in this song. And it's Jonghyun's vocals that pretty much shapes SHINee's style and sound. The one you hear with the high notes, long notes and adlibs in SHINee's songs most of the time is Jonghyun. SHINee is made up of some of the most distinct voices in all of Kpop, so once you start to recognize their voices, you will never wonder who is speaking or singing. Pretty much all Shawols will tell you the same thing -- we can recognize all their voices instantly no matter the situation and we don't even have to see their faces to know it's them. That's how unique all of their voices are -- there is no one with a voice like any of theirs. One of the things SHINee are known for is their harmonies, and they have one of the best 5 part harmonies in the industry. That is one of the reasons why they are known as a top vocal group and why they are so admired by their peers. Their harmonies are unmatched. And this was baby SHINee, just imagine how good their harmonization has become now that their voices have matured. Just wait until you hear them live, now that they fully understand how to present the full range of their vocal color. :D You will be blown away. To sum up exactly what SHINee's style is: they are vocal powerhouses that create universally popular pop songs. :D When it comes to SHINee you can't expect anything except that it will be uniquely SHINee and probably one of the best songs and performances you will ever experience. Every song that SHINee has ever released is unlike any other and it won't sound or look like anything you have ever seen from them, including the songs on the same album. That's why they have such a big influence on the music industry, even from day one. SHINee's whole concept since debut is they are supposed to be SM's experimental boy group, so they are constantly making and setting trends. And songs like "Love Like Oxygen" are a good example of that. You wanna know what trends SHINee has started? Let's make a list: -- They are one of the first groups to start the trend of colored skinny jeans and form-fitting outfits that showed off their athletic psychics for male idols. Before SHINee, the trend was hip-hop style with baggy clothing that was 3 times too big. (SHINee started the boyfriend/student look.) Their fashion trends have been given the name "SHINee Trend." -- They were one of the first groups to have sharp precise synchronized dance moves and to show the world that they could sing live while performing complex choreography and sound flawless. Because of SHINee, everyone upped their standard when it comes to live performances and choreography. -- They were the very first group to release a dance practice video specifically so fans could see the full dance, and they were the first to have a dance practice video become a trending video online. They are the reason why dance practice videos are a thing today. -- Jonghyun was one of the first IDOLS to be recognized as a singer/songwriter, and to produce songs for not only himself and his group, but for other artists as well. Jonghyun was highly respected within the industry for his songwriting and composing skills and he was considered one of the most prolific artists of his generation. About 40% of SHINee's songs were wrote by him, as well as all of his own solo songs and several songs for other artists, such as EXO, Taemin, IU, Lee HI, etc. -- And SHINee pretty much starts almost every trend in the music industry when it comes to the sound and style of their music. And every song they release is expected to be something that has never been seen or heard before. Not only is it expected to be something they have never done before, but they are expected to come up with a sound and style that has never been done before in the entire music industry. The industry looks to SHINee to set the trends and to show them the next direction to take. And that continues still today even after more than 14 years in the industry. -- SHINee are also often the ones to start the next dance style or trend in the Kpop industry with their choreography. -- They were one of the first groups to use a world-famous choreographer to create their dance for their "Sherlock (Clue & Note)" MV. "Sherlock" was the first time SM (or pretty much anyone in the Kpop industry) had ever used a famous choreographer, and at the time, it was the most expensive Kpop production ever. -- They are also the group that is most likely to appear on the first episode or on the pilot episode of a new variety show and it is said that it's good luck to have SHINee on the program first because that means it will be a success.

In the SHINee's "Lucifer" MV the "smoke" or "light trail" you see is supposed to represent the aura of a girl who has devilish powers like Lucifer, who is trying to possess them and take over their lives. As the English lines in the song say, "Loveaholic, robotronic ... her whisper is the Lucifer." (They are using auto tune because they are supposed to be "robotronic"-ly controlled by the girl who is "The Lucifer." So the auto tune is meant to make them sound robotic.) In other words, the woman or girl they are talking about is so desirable that she is like Lucifer and you have to use all your willpower just to resist her wiles. In the MV you see them trying to fight against Lucifer's powers and resist her attempts to try to make them bend to her will, etc. That's why in the choreography you see all the robotic moves because they are showing how "Lucifer" is trying to control them like a robot. For example, they put their wrists together like they are being handcuffed to show how she is trapping them, and they vibrate to show how they are being manipulated by "Lucifer" and they are trying to resist her powers, etc. (FYI: That vibration you saw them do is 100% them actually shaking like that, there aren't any camera tricks. If you pay attention when they perform Lucifer live, you will see them do that exact same thing. :D) LOL we have no idea why they had to be dancing in front of a sports car, but that was kind of an iconic thing that Kpop companies did back then in a lot of their MVs, The group would dance around a fancy car to show off their coolness and to give the video a more futuristic, expensive looking aesthetic. "Lucifer" was released in 2010, so this was just the look that a lot of MVs had back then, in part because everyone was following SHINee's lead. Just take a look at TVXQ's, Super Junior's, Infinite's or 2PM's MVs, etc. from around that time and you will see a similar look and style. SHINee was setting trends in the industry with 'Lucifer." As trendsetters it is SHINee's job to introduce the next song style and dance trend to the industry, and when SHINee has a comeback the industry takes note and follows suit. It is said that within 3 months of SHINee's comeback you will see that same sound, style and dance trend being duplicated across the industry for both boy groups and girl groups. That's how influential SHINee is. I'm not sure why people are often so thrown by their hairstyles and outfits in this MV. :D I think they are actually all pretty cool for doing something different that sets them apart from everyone else in the industry. That is what makes SHINee legends and why "Lucifer" is such an iconic song and dance. You're not going to remember a group or a song if they look and sound the same as everyone else, you remember them for standing out and not being afraid to be unique. SHINee are also known for never being afraid to experiment with everything they do, including their style, and as the fashionista and stylist of the group, Key is always looking for ways to be unique, so his head was really shaved on the one side. What you see is his hair was bleached blond on the side and then shaved down to his scalp. He is known for always being unique and wanting to stand out. That's why Key's style is often just straddling the edge of outrageous, but somehow always manages to look cool. Fun fact: I think one reason why Minho's hair is so short at this time is because their previous comeback was with their song "Ring Ding Dong," and all the members had pretty long, shaggy hairstyles. However, Minho has never liked having long hair. So, I think for "Lucifer" Minho decided to rebel and go really short. This was also the era where Taemin had long hair and it made him one of the most popular of the members at the time, especially with their Japanese fans. The Japanese culture really embraces men with long hair and the members said that he was one of the most popular at the time because of his style. Taemin with long hair is so iconic and many in the fandom were really sad when he eventually cut his hair. So, in this MV, Taemin had just turned 17. Onew and Jonghyun are 20 and Key and Minho are 18. With SHINee's experimental concept, nothing they do will ever be like anything they have ever done before and that includes all the songs on each album. Every song and MV will be completely different from each other with a whole different, look and style every time. Whenever SHINee releases something new, the only thing we expect is that it will be a brand new sound, look and dance style that we have never seen before. That's why their discography is so diverse and why they are able to continue to stay relevant even after more than 14 years. If you want to see where SHINee truly shines, if you haven't yet, you have to check out their iconic performance of "Lucifer" Live in concert. Check out their performance at their SHINee World Concert III (SWC3) in Seoul from 2014, kzbin.info/www/bejne/fJ6Yn2uHZ72CaZY. This is a perfect example of how you can tell they are singing live and killing it every time. SHINee doesn't need auto tune, and if you hear them perform the song live, they often don't use it. "Lucifer" is actually known as one of the most difficult songs and dances to cover because of its tutting and popping and for the fact that it has a very fast paced beat with dance moves that are very sharp and precise which are designed to hit every beat of the song. And the song itself is very complicated with the songs wide range of notes and flow. Many amateurs have thought "Lucifer" looks like one of SHINee's more simple songs and dances. But the minute they try to sing the song and/or dance the choreography, they soon discover that it is way more complicated than they thought. It only looks and sounds simple, because SHINee makes it look that way. Check out this clip of SHINee teaching a group of actors and comedians "Lucifer" as part of a challenge on the variety show "Invincible Baseball Team," kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZoeTY5aHrL5_g7M. It's funny because when they came to meet SHINee to start the practice, Jonghyun asked them why they chose this song of all songs, and they said because it looks manly and they thought it was fairly easy to cover. But the first thing Jonghyun said to them, while laughing, was "oh no, actually it's one of our more difficult choreography and it took us extra time to really perfect it." :D You definitely should check out the dance practice. SHINee's "Lucifer" dance practice was the very first dance practice video ever released specifically for fans. SHINee is the group that started the trend and they are why dance practice videos are even a thing today. :D It was the very first dance practice video to go viral. Back then dance practice videos were filmed for the group and artists to watch to help them remember the moves and to fix mistakes, etc. They weren't intended for a mass audience. But SM realized that fans were starting to try and copy SHINee's choreography, so they decided to film a dance practice and release it to the public. SHINee's dance practice videos became so popular that other companies and groups started to do the same and show off their choreography by releasing dance practices too.
