Yes, I can watch "Ghost Ship" a million times and still breakdown laughing when the Capt. says "foward!!" and then again, "forard ",,,,,and Hardy checks out Laurel's forehead. Then, they are going to dump the "body" and Laurel asks if he's going to go to the other place, not heaven. Hardy tells him go get a piece of coal. "you mean if you go to the other place, you gotta take your own coal",,, Priceless.

@@sherrychaffin4843 I have the entire DVD set. I've seen em a million times. Even though I know exactly what's going to happen, I still laugh out loud. They were so innocent in a big world for them. All the contributing actors were perfect, like Finlayson. "ohhh, my good eye!" But my all time favorite is Ghost Ship. Where they shanghai guys for the capitan. Best line,,,,after ther captain clears out the crew down below, he tells everyone "forard (without the w, which means go forward on the ship). L&H just stand there and the capt. yells FORARD! and Hardy turns towards Laurel and checks out Laurel's forehead. I'm lol as I write. Same pic, they have to throw the "body" of the drunk overboard and they are talking about whether he will go to heaven or the "other place". Hardy says the other place and tells Laurel to get a lump of coal to put into the sack with the body. Laurel says "you mean if you go the other place you have to take your own coal" . God love em and RIP their souls. Nice talking to you.

I'm 49 and laurel and hardy was my childhood!! Never missed one. I've being doing a little research since I watched 'Stan & Ollie' and I'm trying to work out reality from fiction. Can anyone help? Firstly, Hal Roach. The film portrayed the relationship between Stan and Hal as not good. Hal kept them on different expiry dates on their contracts so they couldn't go alone. But...has anybody watched 'this is your life' from when both Stan and ollie where recognised? Hal Roach was a guest and all seemed fine between the three of them. Did they kiss and make up? Also. Bernard Delfont, who managed their last England tour in 1953. The movie paints a greedy promoter taking advantage of these two great men. But he also is with them on 'this is your life'. In fact, he was part of the team who planned the surprise on Stan and Ollie. This was two years (I think) after the tour? I'm just really curious. Also... The film suggests 'way out west' to be their final picture for Hal. Then Stan was fired and Ollie done the elephant movie. But yet, according to wiki, most of their films where shot between 1935-1949. On Stan and ollie, ollie makes reference to him and Stan just getting to know each other again. Wiki suggests they never stopped working together. I'd love to know so please do share any info.

It's nice that people like this, though it's far from vintage L&H with just the occasional flash coming through. One such is the parade sequence where Stan sticks Penelope down Ollie's pants (33:30 to 36:10). Ollie's reactions are priceless. And as others have noted the third to sixth of their TCF films were a definite improvement, Mal St Clair actually understood slapstick and allowed them to modify the scripts. Of their 8 40's films though I'd probably rate this 5th (No 1 The Bullfighters, 2 Jitterbuge, close 3rd The Dancing Masters, 4th The Big Noise, 5 GG, 6 Air Raid Wardens 7 Nothing But Trouble & 8 A-Haunting we will go. Here's a personal ranking of all their features (not including guest appearances) (Loving these guys as I do I wouldn't actively avoid any of these though I struggle to stay interested in no 22) 1 Way Out west 2 Sons of the Desert 3 Blockheads 4 Our Relations 5 A Chump at Oxford (top 5 for Lord Paddington) 6 Pack up your troubles 7. Pardon Us 8. Babes in Toyland 9. The Flying Deuces 10. Swiss Miss 11. The Bullfighters (highest ranked post Roach film - I think they have more energy here than in any other post Roach film and I really enjoy the different locale) 12. The Bohemian Girl 13. Jitterbugs (another very pleasant TCF offering - the best produced post Roach film - even the songs are ok) 14. The Devil's Brother (has great comedy material but Hal Roach's direction of the drama scenes is deadly) 15. Bonnie Scotland (again terrific comedy material but a lot of dead weight with the plot-line) 16. The Dancing Masters (scrappy but funny and they have a scene with Robert Mitchum!!!) 17. Atoll K - much maligned and not fun to see Stan so ill - BUT it offers them genuinely Fresh situations, has a good share of funny and occasionally touching moments and an interesting plot 18. Saps at Sea (lowest ranked Hal Roach - amusing but obviously rushed to complete their contract.) 19. The Big Noise - lots of cribs from earlier films, which is no bad thing. But the execution is perfunctory , which dampens things a bit. Stan's rendition of Mairzy Doats is funny (and causes a crew member to laugh). 20. Great Guns - aside from everything else - a change in the make up applied to L & H ages them about 10 years) 21. Air Raid Wardens - A potentially funny film, which looks closer to vintage Laurel & Hardy (thanks to a re-use of their old make-up) + and teams them with old adversary Edgar Kennedy. But it then squanders every comic possibility with leaden direction, bad blocking and pacing.) 22. Nothing But Trouble (very thin material-annoying story line, the dinner scene should be the highlight but barely raises a titter.) 23. A-Haunting we will go (the only time I can think of where Stan actually looks unhappy.) Of course one shouldn't forget the real gems which are shorts such as The Music Box, Towed in a Hole, Laughing Gravy, Brats, Helpmates, A Perfect Day, Hog Wild, Their First Mistake, The Music Box, Towed in a Hole, Busy Bodies, Going Bye Bye, Them Thar Hills ("pom-pom") Tit for Tat and another half dozen I can't think of just now - and also some of their silents are also very funny. Heck, there's so much to choose from with these two fellows.

I want to thank you for the information. I’ve been watching them since I’m a kid in the 1950’s. My Dad and I went to the movies to see L&H in a compilation film sometime in the 1960’s. It was all their silent film on the big screen. Do you know the name of that film? I think it was called “L&H in the roaring ‘20’s”? I’m not sure. Thanks again.

I agree. This movie gives more screen time to all the other supporting characters that does to Stan and Ollie. All their films after Hal Roach are like that. 20th Century Fox and MGM had no idea about the genius of Laurel and Hardy. They wanted to do things their own way and give didn't give a damn if Stan and Ollie liked it or not.

@@kevinhoffman8112 Stan and Babe had more leeway when Mal St. Clair became their regular director starting with JITTERBUGS, and Stan was able to veto bits that he knew were bad or out-of-character(he made significant changes to the opening of DANCING MASTERS, for instance), and I always felt that the four he directed, even the much-maligned BIG NOISE, are better than the ones others directed by others like A-HAUNTING WE WILL GO.

Yes, I chortled maybe twice during the whole movie. It was the most unfunny boring L&H movie ever, painful it most certainly was! Because 20th Century Fox strictly scripted the whole lot with no adlibs hence L&H were restricted (strangled) hence a totally crap totally unmemorable -movie- flop.

@@TheGeezzer The Fox films only exist because of Abbott and Costello. Between SAPS AT SEA and this L&H couldn't get arrested in Hollywood, then A&C became a phenomenon with BUCK PRIVATES, and Fox figured L&H could be their own A&C. So naturally, Fox tried to turn Stan and Babe INTO Abbott and Costello. I think that after Fox cancelled all their B series in 1942 they threw up their hands on that and stopped micro-managing the L&H films, reasoning that they'd end in a few years time(indeed when Fox tried to re-sign L&H after the last one, it was for them to support musical stars, not star in B films). They seem more like their old selves in the fast four Fox films.

I liked this production also, I also feel that their Hal Roach's short productions were the best but this was also funny. I laugh so much that tears will be pouring down my face. And even when I see the same feature more than once, I still feel like laughing as much as if I was seeing it for the first time. I also prefer them above Charlie Chaplin or Abbot and Costella and others. Their acting is priceless, and especially the expressions Hardy shows on his face over Laurel's antics. Watching Laurel and Hardy seems like pure heaven to me, and however depressed I may feel they still make me to laugh and laugh. I love them both, I used to love them when I was a kid, and I love them now also in my 53rd years.

Hear hear, you have expressed the feelings of millions of their fans. They are without a doubt the best cinematic cure for depression of all time, even in movies like this, which is not one of their best. God bless them both and you too for posting your comment.

I don't know if Stan and Olie did these awful movies just as part of the war effort, but sadly every movie I have seen that they did after 1941 were universally unfunny pale shadows of their previous work. From what I gather they had very little control over the content and production which would explain why these movies were so bad, but I'm convinced Stan and Olie must have known they were substandard. Regretfully their downward spiral continued culminating in the truly awful 1950 movie "Utopia" which effectively ruined their career.

They've assigned us a porter! Laughed myself horse. Great humour. Love the long plank of wood gag with Stan in different poses. Great fun, however, agree with previous comments, the earlier films were much stronger, these later one's lacked something of the Hal Roach period.

That long plank gag had previously been used in their silent classic "The Finishing Touch" (1927 or 28)...
