Thank you for posting this! It may interest some to know that the clerk behind the counter at 15:04 is Wilkie Mahoney, who went on to gain notoriety as a comedy writer, first at Captain Billy's Whiz Bang magazine and then for A-list radio stars, including Bob Hope. Wilkie wrote the first joke Milton Berle ever paid for and, as the chief gag writer at MGM in the early 40s, worked directly with a young comedy star named Red Skelton. As a child, I knew him prior to his death in 1976.

'Film critic Leonard Maltin compared _The Great Race_ (1965) pie fight to _The Battle of the Century_ and determined that Laurel and Hardy's pacing was far superior, that the more modern film suffered from an "incomplete understanding of slapstick" ' (Wikipedia) -- couldn't agree more!!

You would get better results by starting with a high-definition scan of the film. Upscaling a low-res source is never a good idea. When a film print exists, that is always the preferred source media.

I agree, this does NOT look good. I see video enhancement & jagged lines in every shot. Stan's outline is sharp but his face is soft.

The soundtrack is a bit of a mess. It was put together from various pieces of other versions of the film found on KZbin.

@@livinghistoryaienhanced For decades, there has been a search for a complete film print and none have been found. And even if one is found, what condition would it be in? On the other hand, a nearly complete print was found on 1927's Metropolis and while it's in bad shape, it's better than nothing. So who knows?
@netram28 Жыл бұрын
The other replies are mistaken. This is indeed the complete film. Parts of it were missing for decades after the original negative was loaned out and trimmed up for a film compilation. But a collector who purchased a privately owned print of the film without even knowing it was the long sought-after complete version finally realized what he had and got it re-released just a few years ago. Characters like the insurance salesman, the Irish washer-woman, the studio photographer and the cop at the end are all part of this restored version.
@essanaypaul625310 ай бұрын
These replies are correct, the scene with the boys buying insurance is missing, it was originally at the end of reel 1. Some speculate it was on a separate negative for color tinting and is lost; while others speculate the end of reel 1 deteriorated.
@kevinhoffman81124 ай бұрын
@@netram28this is not the complete version of the film. There is a scene in the middle involving an insurance salesman which has gone missing for years.
