Laurel Run - Another Town Lost To A Mine Fire

We visit Laurel Run, Pennsylvania. A mine fire that started in 1915 in the Red Ash Mine due to a miners lamp sealed the fate of this small Northeastern Pennsylvania town. Just like with Centralia, the mine fire proved too dangerous for the people to remain and in the early 1960's plans were put into motion to move the people out and remove all of the houses including a church and two grocery stores. By 1970 Laurel Run was completely gone. The fire continued to spread threatening other towns nearby so officials had the entire Red Ash Mine excavated in an effort to extinguish the fire. In 1973 the fire was declared extinguished.....but was it? In this video we will investigate. #laurelrun #centralia #coal

Thank you for sharing this. My dad was born and raised in Laurel Run. Every day, he would take my sister and me to my grandfather's house. It was common to see the steam coming up from the ground. My grandfather was one of the families who had to leave. My dad loved Laurel Run, so did I. A great memory for me.

My in-laws live on Laurel Run Rd, and I’ve seen the evidence of the mine fires, still burning. It’s simply something I had a hard time wrapping my head around-that this was still happening, after so many years had passed. 🔥

Why not just mining the burning coal seam? Or use the gasses - mostly CO, N2 and CO2 as fuel?

My mom grew u there. She was a Searfoss I spent my childhood and into my teen years at my grandparent's house. Your video brings back so many memories. I think, and its been more than 50 years, they lived on Slatery Street. Thank you so much for this trip back in time.
