Hal Roach treated them like CRAP. He was a major league jerk in his younger days. They were way underpaid and denied raises. He played one against the other. Paid Laurel a lot more than Hardy and kept their contract expiration dates staggered so they could not leave and go to another studio or out on their own. L&H were treated as bad by Roach as the Three Stooges were by Harry Cohn at Columbia.

In fact, my father used to go to the movie house on Saturday afternoon when he was a boy and watch the Our Gang shorts (as well as the Three Stooges).
