Ivan Kouznetsoff, a Russian engineer, recounts during World War II his stay in England prior to the war working on a new propeller for ice-breaking ships. Naive about British people, and convinced by hearsay that they are shallow and hypocritical, Ivan is both bemused and amused by them.

We British are never as funny as when we gently mock ourselves and it is done beautifully in this 1943 film and Laurence Olivier's Russian accent is thrown in for free. Yes it is a propaganda film in the sense it was intended to project the Soviet's as our new friends and generally raise morale but foremost it was an entertainment and it still is.

Laurence Olivier is a genius! I admire him. I don't understand how he does it I mean how he captures the "russianness" of the Russian native character but he does it wonderfully. As a Russian I can confirm it. Those were the Actors!

I have read many of the comments here ... I find it just startling that people are unable to enjoy this lovely fantasy, not as propaganda, not thinking of the gulag while watching, not discussing if the main characters accent fitted the actor as they personally like him ... Its not a newspaper, its not a paper by a historian, its a FILM, its meant to make dream, move and feel well when you watch it ... Its very well acted, the plot is fine, the dialogs are humorous, touching ... I wonder, what do you expect from a film ? A history lesson ? A carnage documentary ? If things didn't happen this way, let us at least dream for a moment they could have. ... and enjoy outstanding film making at the same time.

His character portrayal of innocence and being naive was dead on with his face expression. What a beautiful face and smile the daughter had. Great lines: I'll have my food upstairs there's a Russian in there. (Showing something in the box), "Does it tick"? (Book), Crime and Punishment. Sign) Guinness is good for you.

Now, now everyone, let’s be kind: ‘There’s no propaganda like the English propaganda!’ 🇦🇺💐The movie was obviously created for the British people in war-time England, who were still in shock after the revolution in Russia earlier in the 20th century. The allies needed the Soviets to keep the Germans occupied on their border during WW2; this movie may have been somewhat useful during the softening-up stage for the Poms. There’ll always be an England. 🇬🇧. I personally feel Lawrence Olivier’s acting is superb - don’t you agree? 👌

One note (pun intended): The 'cellist Beatrice Harrison was not only famous for her 78 of her playing to nightingales in her garden (yes, it really is true - if you look up her name and nightingale you'll find the 78 here on KZbin). She was also known as the composer Edward Elgar's favorite soloist - and she was famous for recording his marvelous cello concerto under the composer's baton - twice! These recordings can also be heard on KZbin and are worth seeking out.

The people whining about propaganda and lack of realism are revealing the lack of imagination and sophistication that the people from the era of this film possessed in spades. This film is in part a nationalistic fantasy to keep people's spirits up during a hellish time. The British people had no illusions regarding the weighty reality of their circumstance during the blitz. And regardless,in all circumstances, people of all times are many things at once. We exist in nightmares and beautiful dreams simultaneously. We sacrifice and hope for freedoms. We sleep in blood soaked trenches and warm downy beds. The greatest truth of this film is the reminder that people are charming and do play as they plan for the worst. This is a beautiful film that reflects a myriad of truths about humanity.

I'm whining about nothing. Every critic, even back when the film was released in 1943, said that THE DEMI-PARADISE was a propaganda piece. Perhaps it ought to have been renamed "From England with Love". Curiously, just two years later Winston Churchill was warning the world about the dangers of the USSR occupying Eastern Europe and forming what he famously called the "Iron Curtain." Yes, in 1943 Great Britain was still the empire on which the sun never set, and the mentality completely different from today. The world has changed - inevitably, some things have improved, some have been lost, and some have worsened. The most dangerous of all is human overpopulation across the globe, UK included.

What an amazing picture, I’d never heard of it. It has to be seen in the context of history; Churchill hated the Russians (Communists) up until Germany invaded Russia. This film would have been an effective tool in shaping public opinion in 1942. Funny, that I’m discovering it today during the tragic war between Russia and Ukraine. It’s going to be difficult for any western individual to see Russia today as anything other than tyrannical.

With Olivier, I could ALmost forget about that 'p' word (propaganda). He could pull anything off with such style. In each war, if men have contact with their enemies' regular soldiers, (the ones that do all the fighting and dying) accounts say many of them realized they were a lot alike. Most wanted a family, safe home and steady employment, and, wherever allowed, freedom. Too bad we don't let THEM run the "Peace" conferences. TY Retrospective - Classic Movies!

Events moved so quickly in the early years of that war, that I suppose after Dunkerque, Coventry and Dieppe, it was easier to forget about Molotov-Ribbentrop, Finland and Katyn. Once the very real threat of clashing in mid-Poland with the dreaded Red Army was no longer the primary reason for the UK to wage only a "phony war" over Germany's violation of Polish sovereignty, a historic outrage only made possible by Hitler's and Stalin's treacherous "anti-aggression pact" signed for that express purpose; once Germany betrayed its principal ally the USSR and overnight forced Great Britain into an unwanted and unworkable alliance with Stalin, I suppose a story like this to reduce the Anglo-Soviet conundrum to a string of farcical cliches must have helped this odious tincture distilled from the strangest of bedfellows go down a little easier. There never was going to be any peace, love and friendship between the Soviet peoples and those of the western democracies, and even as erstwhile and reluctant allies they never managed to truly trust one another's intentions for after the war, a mistrust which events to come proved a more than credible one. But that shakiest of geopolitical platitudes, that "the enemy of my enemy is my friend", apparently had to suffice for the moment, for as Comrade Ivan Kuznetsov puts it here, making the best of things is for good or ill a kind of religion to the British. In 1943 when this picture was released there may not have seemed a lot of bests to be made of many things, so it is entirely understandable that this hyperbolic and implausible near-farce of wishful thinking about the possibilities of an Anglo-Soviet future seemed a reasonable idea, or at least ideology, to present.

I don't know if you meant as a Soviet tourist? or as a newly arrived Soviet immigrant? I've had the pleasure of knowing both. Some very famous, some everyday regular folks.

@@kidmack1121 I meant communist of those days before the WW2. People are different now, not reserved as they were under Stalin and KGB control especially if you go abroad..That's what I meant. All people are of good nature mostly, it doesn't depend on nationality. Did you mean 'Soviet' or Russian tourist or immigrant? Since 1991 'Soviet ' doesn't exist. Thank you for the response.

@@galenavlasova7580 Dearest Galena, I'm pretty old, yes, I meant Soviets. I live in the city that many Russian people referred to as "end of the line" When we moved here in 1970, there were still quite a few "white Russian" emigreés (and I don't mean Belorussian) they were very old, and had left before Lenin and Dzerzhinsky sealed immigration. The two most memorable acquaintances; Mr Bornelev (not sure of the spelling) who was our landlord. And "Mr. Harry" that I met when we lived outside of Washington DC. for a short time. He owned a small neighborhood market, and I used to enjoy talking with him, when he'd come into the store from his adjoining home. He had long retired, but would come in sometimes and sit and talk with his customers. He was the one who told me about the phrase "end of the line" I met others, Ms. Vera, and a Professor Charnovsky, all pre Stalin immigrants, and you are right, they were very friendly and open. I had classmates and teammates who came with their families, or who's families left just before they we're born during Kruschev, and Breznev, most of them were Russian Jews. I played pick up in the late 70's with the sons of two Soviet diplomats assigned to the Soviet embassy. And then the famous ones I mentioned meeting, who left during Gorbachev, Igor Larionov, and Sergei Makarov. And at CSKA in Moskva; Alexei, Kasatonov, Valery Kamensky, and Vladimir Malakov, and I was even yelled at by coach Tikhonov! I really miss hearing all the stories, as Russians are very good story tellers. And you are welcome! Ochin pryatna, and I've forgotten how to say All The Best.

I've forgotten to ask you if you liked Olivier's performance in this film? I did, but then I like him as an actor in just about everything he's been in. My favorite favorite character in this film, other than the cat and dog, is Miss Parsons (Joyce Grenfell)

@@kidmack1121 Hello. Ochen priyatno to hear your story. I have a friend here (Boston, UK), the member of the oldest church (Stump), he is Russian. His parents came to London after the revolution. He is a wonderful elderly man, speaks russian with me, but he uses older words and asks me the meaning of the newer versions of them. Example, 'parokhod' is a steam boat, he never says 'korabl' as we do nowadays when we go on cruise, or 'avtomobil' - car, we say 'mashina', etc. Very interesting to speak to him. He is very much honored here, his name is Nicolay Fillipovich, Nick as they call him. Pls, could you explain what your Russian friends meant saying "End of the line"? Is it word for word translation? I love Lawrence Olivier and watched this movie just because of him. Can't say if i liked his performance or not, but his character seems to me as parody of a Soviet Russian person of those days abroad. And it was necessary to be a communist then. I met here an English couple, the man was an engineer and had a business trip with some coworkers to the USSR. He told that they were always watched by the representative of KGB. They never been relaxed. Even on the plane back home there was a watcher. After they have passed the border they applaud of happiness. :). Hope you will like my stories and feel free to keep in touch. Vsego khoroshego - all the best.:)

Imagine how outraged the British would be if this were a Russian film . . . When we made The Patriot, their newspapers tore Benjamin Martin apart for being a slaveholder, etc., while simultaneously admitting that he was a composite of three different men, which obviously means that he wasn’t intended to be a realistic portrayal of any one of them. And the irony is that we actually got British actors to play the British roles. In fact, the same actor who played General Lord Cornwallis played Benjamin Franklin in the John Adams miniseries, which is also about the American War for a Independence. Proof that it’s alright to self-deprecate as long as no one has the temerity to agree with you.

Larry's accent is English accented Slavic accent. Sounds Western Eastern European, more Polish or Czech. The film is hilarious, and we see why he is acclaimed - this is the first Olivier comedy I've seen.

Interesting movie, performed at a time after Hitler betrayed Stalin with their mutual non aggression pact, and when Stalin needed new allies against his former enemy/ally. Olivier is delicious as usual, but with a very ODD voice and accent. Real life socialite Penelope Dudley-Ward, meanwhile, has a lovely voice and looks best suited to radio.
