Northeast seasonal depression is SO REAL!!! Born and raised in Massachusetts, lived here all my life and i can easily say that January-March is ROUGH! Every day feels very blah and grey but totally agree about brightening the space and I heard those lights work! Cannot wait to see more of LN NY in the future too🎉 cheers to one year in NYC🍎🗽🍾

Yes to the safety/always trusting your gut!! Another tip/personal experience as a woman - if you see someone following you and you have a gut feeling it’s not a good situation, find someone/a group ASAP your gut believes you can trust and say “can I pretend I know you and walk with you for a minute? There might be someone following me” or anything along those lines. Had this happen to me and women have asked me to do the same, and not even kidding, everyone has ALWAYS lended a hand and we pretended we knew each other, even for a few minutes. It’s incredibly unfortunate to be in these situations, but it’s also great to trust your gut on finding people who could potentially help in a short amount of time. Let’s all look out for each other!! Great video!!🫶

I’ve lived in nyc all my life (almost 24 years) I’m straight forward and try not to bullshit with people but definitely nice to everyone I can be! I HATE THE WINTER HERE. It kills me every year since I was a child.. I’m always so sad and don’t want to do anything ever. Everything is so dull and sad. Definitely need good shoes being anywhere in nyc. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve left a party or a bbq because I felt off and there ends up being a shoot out or someone got stabbed, I’ve had times I didn’t listen and almost got shot I NEVER stay if I feel weird anymore. Always be mindful of your surroundings, I always have my headphones on loud asf usually but always looking around always lowering it when something feels weird to check out what’s going on around me ect. Definitely get a shopping cart to keep at home to take when food shopping is a BIG help when food shopping. ALWAYS late, I have to leave a hour and a half early if it takes 40mins to get there😂 Definitely explore other places than manhattan. I’ve lived in Staten Island, Long Island, Manhattan and Brooklyn And Brooklyn is literally my favorite place. I live here right now and I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else rn. Stopping in the middle of the sidewalk or walking slow asf is one of the only things that gets me 😫😫😫 I don’t know why but I can’t deal with it😂😂

No one talks about how shadowy and windy it is because of all the buildings, which make winters worse. Also, yellow and green taxis are probably even more trustworthy than Ubers!

Those medallions are impossible to get so they don't want to mess it up. Though when I was in my 20s uber was still new in the city and it only cost like $15 to get up to Washington Heights from Midtown, however I fell asleep on the Uptown A late night more times than I could count. LOL

This was spot on. I’ve lived in cities for 15 years (NYC & SF). It can be tough sometimes, but also so rewarding. One thing I learned was looking for apartments with laundry in the building, or accept that you’ll be spending hours in a laundromat or sending out your laundry for fluff and fold.

I'm born and raised 30 minutes North of the city. I moved to NC and TX for five years and now back in NY. Most of us struggle through January and February even though we know it's coming and we're mentally prepared. It's very, very hard. Last Winter was easy- we still got a ton of snow but not as much as normal. And, when you live in NY, things don't close down when the roads are bad. The best thing we as New Yorkers will tell you is- embrace it. Get upstate a little bit and go snowshoeing, snowboarding, hiking. Embracing the Winter versus fighting it can make a huge difference. Additionally, we get a bad reputation for being 'rude' because unlike living in the South, we don't stop to say hi to everyone or have a conversation. We move fast and have a place to be and a purpose. We are also abrupt and we say what we think without sugarcoating it. Unlike living in the south where people stop and say hi and have a conversation and say everything sugarcoated- we are blunt, to the point and say what we think- because again everything has a purpose and we get to the point. Getting to the point, walking at a normal/ fast pace are things I desperately missed when I lived down South. I encourage you to start spending a little more time upstate- you can take Amtrak to some stunning places up North.

The seasonal depression is so real here, I’ve been in the city for 4 years (Chelsea for 2 and bushwick for 2) I think the biggest thing you said is find a hobby that is an escape. I started going to karaoke at this random bar on Mondays, I have made so many invaluable friendships from that. Find a group to join, or become a regular at a location to make friends. If I could tell baby New Yorker me that the random bar I walked into would be the hub of my closest friendships and also the heart of my career growth (I’m a musician), I wouldn’t have believed it but wow am I glad it is. That place is my escape

LOL, always check the peephole before opening the door. I'll usually yell at the door: "Who is it", and I don't answer if they don't say. Oh, and I'm in a locked building. Ms. Laruen, I have a rolling cart thing. I use it for taking out trash and doing laundry and taking up groceries. Be careful your cart doesn't break though.

Hello Lauren, I was born and lived in New York City area for the first 16 yrs of my life then moved back in my twenties for a couple of years I’m proud to be able to say I’m a Newyorker even though I haven’t spent the majority of my life living there. I also lived in Los Angeles Ca. for 18 yrs so I’ve experienced opposite ends of east coast - west coast living and the lifestyle are completely DIFFERENT and so are the people completely different too, that being said I’m grateful for both experiences for sure, I learned a lot and definitely did a lot met a lot of interesting people for sure that taught me about life. I appreciate your take on life living in NYC and the advice you gave very WISE and insightful. Like in most City neighborhoods especially for women whom might be living alone always consider your SAFETY first and foremost. Great video Lauren ! 🙌🌻 Take Care !☀️ I LOVE ❤️ NY

A year already!! My my my, how time flies. I am loving the LNxNYC era. Since I’ve moved from Philadelphia PA to Columbia SC in 2016, I’ve learned how to slow down and enjoy living life. I love the slower pace of the South. Plus, I feel like I was always on go back home in Philadelphia (spent 24 years of my life there). I love my hometown but I am glad that I prioritized my mental health over staying in an area where it was getting dangerous by the day. So much of these tips apply to major cities as well as small towns ❤❤❤

As a native NYer born and raised…..something’s that I’ll add are, try to explore more than just Manhattan. NYC has so much culture especially in the rest of the boroughs. There’s actually a lot to do in all of the boroughs that are still underrated and not fully known, and appreciated by even us locals. For food, if you wanna try good Italian food….try Little Italy in the Bronx on Arthur Avenue which is like 2 blocks, and it’s the authentic Little Italy or go to Staten Island which is filled with majority Italian-Americans. There’s also Los Tacos No. 1 by the Highline (old railroad tracks turned into a walkable park.) As for places to relax…the Highline, Prospect Park which is in Brooklyn, and Greenwood Cemetery also in Brooklyn and it was the original concept for Central Park. I also recommend to visit upstate for the Fall because of the foliage especially in the mountains, and then for summer….Long Island (where I’m from) because we have amazing beaches: Long Beach, Lido Beach, Robert Moses Beach, Jones Beach.) When it comes to safety….yes NYC definitely does have crime here and there but the news definitely over-exaggerates it….crime in the city today is actually less than what it was last year. I recommend looking up NYPD Compstat.2, it’s an NYPD run website that shows the statistics for crime in NYC in real time.

Also, as someone who’s lived half my life and half my life in the north- I don’t understand the negative rep northerners get. Yes they are more unfiltered but there are just as many mean and fake people down south….. I’d say more. Also, the winter is soooooo hard. Wow.. this sounds very scary and dangerous! Is it like this only in NY or in all major cities in the US? People getting killed and being followed legt right and center?

I will say things have gotten a lot more unsafe the past few years. There was a lot of immigration that brought gangs from South America and crimes we haven’t had in a while. A lot of the stores around Times Square reported drastic decreases in sales from theft. My mom was in a store the other day and almost got trampled on by someone running with stolen merchandise. A lot of these problems also came about with the anti police movement. I have to go into the city to get my laser treatments done (NYC has some of the best pricing for beauty treatments, I go to a place in the village called spa Jolie, not fancy, but best priced fraxel around).

Babe how did you not check out where grocery stores were and how NY winters were before you moved here 😭

I had visited during winters for years before moving here but it’s very different living here than visiting for a week. And no, when I was touring apartments, the grocery store wasn’t on my list of things to look for. Hence why I mentioned it in this video.

As a native New Yorker the best thing you can do is mind your business 😂. No one cares, we all just mind our business here. Unless someone needs help, then you’ll have a ton of random people who will help you
